BEWARE - DO NOT HIRE Henry "Adam" Mitchell. I hired him almost 3 years ago, we agreed he would add a high end bathroom, remodel 1st floor bathroom, mudroom; build addition. Job was to start Oct , 2021 and end December 31st 2021. He told me he pulled permits that he knew he had not applied for; but requested money under the guise of starting the job. He went as far as tearing down an existing deck; said we start tomorrow that was Nov 2021; requested another 30k for materials said he would be back in the morning. He did not come back for 6 months. When he finally came back it was for a week or two and he abandoned the job again. I went to the police and under threats of arrest he came back for 3 weeks; immediately he wanted money and new contract; /I refused he became belligerent and hostile abandoning the job over and over again. He had spent 125k, and now had no money to start my job. If I asked for a time line he would spin off into profane laden rants, threating to ruin me if I did not give him more money. By the summer of 2023 he started telling the town inspector that he couldn't finish the job because I was crazy and i had robbed him. He spun the narrative and claimed he was being victimized and bullied. He repeated this to the building inspector who wrongly granted occupancy certificates even though the 2nd fl bath was never inspected and the 1st fl inspections were not completed. Once he had possession of the permits he abandon the jobs for the final time claiming the certificates proved job was done and there was no remaining liability on his part. He prays on people that he believes can't fight back or are not financially able to fight back. He claimed the 2nd floor bathroom was included in the existing permit. When the building inspector came on site, I found out quickly that was yet another lie. I paid him an excessive amount to convert an existing room into a high end bathroom that is still not done; What I received was a disaster that two years later is not even useable. He did not waterproof anything, tiles are falling away from shower walls, paint is peeling, nothing was sealed, spray insulation was used to secure lights in place; There is mold behind the tiles. licensed electrician or plumber not used; etc.. He left a sewage pipe running on the outside of the wall in the 1st floor bathroom because he claims it's how it's done and refused to correct. He now claims I made him do it!! This dip shit used spray foam insulation for the ceiling of the addition, but did not block the gaping hole he put in my kitchen ceiling where he ran the 2nd fl sewage pipe for 1 1/2 years. This damaged more of my property; appliances floor etc; He claims not his problem as damages were not outlined in the original contract. He took a circular saw and cut out large sections of asbestos shingles on existing home and cut down to the studs; Refused to repair because again repairing things he destroyed was not in the existing contract, like my foundation. He did not follow the architectural designs. When it became blaring obvious he was making major changes, (like addition ridiculously lower than existing home) I asked him what he was doing, and he said the architect is an idiot and that architectural plans were a suggestion; if I wasn't so f'ing stupid I'd know that. He claimed he could make changes whenever he wanted and he did not care if I reported him to the state; he would just file bankruptcy and open up the next day under a new company name and that the State of Massachusetts couldn't do shit about it! He spent the better part of almost two years threating to drag me through court and f up my life, if I did not keep my mouth shut, and give him more money along with a new contract. He already had so much of my money I was trapped and he knew it! And just when you think it could not get any worse; I told him I was taking him to mediation with the State because he refused to finish job, file insurance claim for damages; This would allow us both to avoid litigation and costly legal fees; and in turn he filed a mechanics lien on my property. I was told that because he is a contractor he is not required to show proof in the State of Massachusetts. The burden of proof is on the homeowner. To add insult to injury he is now trying to force the sale of my home; the mechanics lien stops me from refinancing or pulling equity to cover the costs of repairs needed. This was deliberate and he orchestrated all of it. He did exactly what he said he was going to do. Jam me up in court and financially try to ruin me and never finish the build if I did not sign a new contract and give him more money. He believed I did not have the money to fight him and would give in; he was counting on it. It is going to cost more to fix this shit show than the entire cost of both jobs. Do not hire this person. He takes on jobs and sends unqualified individuals to work for less money in order to increase his own earnings. I hired Adam Mitchell to remodel my bathroom. He assured me that I didn't need a permit and immediately began working in my bathroom. After demolishing it, he sent workers to cover the walls with sheetrock instead of using blue board. Live wires were exposed on the wall, and there was even mold that he planned to conceal, but fortunately, we caught it in time. The holes in the walls that his staff created looked as if a two-year-old had made them. There were substantial gaps between the boards, and when we inquired about it, he dismissively said, "Don't worry; it'll all be covered with plaster." Furthermore, we discovered mold all over the insulation, and one of the supporting 4x4s was rotten and not even attached to the floor. Shockingly, he intended to close the wall without addressing any of these issues. Our electrician pointed out hanging wires and a live wire that Adam had no intention of addressing or informing us about; he simply wanted to close up the wall. We had given this man $10,000 in advance, and it became clear that he was trying to cut corners to keep costs down. Every time we attempted to discuss these concerns with him, he would become confrontational, raise his voice, and remind us of how busy he was. I had provided him with a link to the tiles I wanted for the floor, but he never placed the order, and we ended up with tiles we disliked. To make matters worse, he closed up the walls without having the inspector examine the bathroom, which was when we decided it was time to part ways with him. We are still dealing with the repercussions of his shoddy work. The paint he used in the bathroom must have been the wrong type, as it now has bubbles and is peeling. We now have to rectify that as well. This individual is highly unprofessional, and if you want a safe, well-executed project, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
