Many people don't realize "You have a right to an attorney" only applies in CRIMINAL cases. Should you find yourself threatened with a lawsuit or have a suit filed against you in a CIVIL case, you will likely find yourself facing off against a lawyer in court on your own. Depending on what type of case it is, you could stand to be evicted, lose your home, lose your children, lose your money, etc. At the clinic, you will fill out some paperwork and then you will get to speak with an attorney and ask them your questions. They can advise you on your best course of action and may even be able to provide you with a free lawyer for your case in certain instances. These clinics are typically on the first Tuesday of every month in several locations in the Middle Tennessee area. They also have many resources and brochures on their website as well. The lawyer I saw went through the mountains of paperwork I brought, answered my questions, told me that I had a case, what it was, and how to present it to the judge effectively. Note on parking: There is a Public Square Garage (Premier Parking) and Court Square Parking (S&P). I paid no less than $20 every time at Public Square. Court Square is cheaper ($7/hr) and the pedestrian exit is right across the street from Legal aid.
