I started going to JJ earlier this year and I had a fantastic experience. He certainly reduced my stress level. I simply dropped off my documents, he completed the taxes, and I went in for a scheduled appointment to review everything. He went over everything line by line, page by page and we made minor adjustments while I was there. As an added bonus, he gave me sound advice on stretching my dollar for the following year. I went to Liberty Tax on Alamaden and told the CPA my situation, and that I wasn't sure how to handle things. I told him I needed his guidance through things this year. I had given enough information that anyone paying attention should have asked a critical, fundamental question. He didn't. I had to Google to learn for myself what to do about a large financial transaction. Once I emailed him the information, he said nothing about deductions and sent us an email quoting a tax bill of over $50,000 and asking us to get our docs and pay for the service. It didn't seem possible we could owe that much. We did another Google search to learn about deductions. I know from previous experience that if you go with specific questions; they are very knowledgeable. Just don't expect any guidance on anything. Don't expect any extra effort on their part to save you money. I put all our numbers into over-the-counter tax software and it guided me to even more deductions I hadn't considered. In the end, our tax bill wasn't much at all. I sent multiple emails to Liberty Tax and gave plenty of time for them to respond to my complaints and questions. The only question of many questions and complaints that they responded to was a threat that I would dispute the charge if they didn't explain a charge. They explained it, fine. They ignored all of my other concerns until after my second call to Liberty Tax headquarters. I accepted a 50% refund for their services just to end the nightmare, but the smug "I'm sure you got some value out of it" response almost sent me over the edge. I redid everything from scratch, all on my own. I got zero value and lost $$ by going there. Will never be back and will warn friends away. Everything was friendly and calm until after I finished redoing taxes. I can honestly give them 5 stars for their personability and friendliness, but in the balance it is still 1 star overall. ] read more

Juan and his team so graciously filed an extension for my husband and I, after we had stalled on getting our 2021 taxes done in time. I worked with Juan to file an extension. I never got any kind of confirmation my extension was filed timely so I called and verbally got a confirmation. Great way to give a customer piece of mind; no email or anything. I would not trust doing business with Juan. Although he will tell you the truth, he will leave out important parts only to have you find out later after asking the right direct questions. For example, 1) there are interest and penalties by filing an extension and 2) if you are to pay the amount of interest and penalties on the mailed letter from the IRS, there will still be an outstanding balance due to the rolling days accruing after the statement cut-off day. I liken it to a dog chasing its tail... and this guy wants to set up my business should I decide to start one. Shady! Nice job IRS. read more

I got a quote online twice, to make sure, and twice they quoted me $250. I also got a quote via phone call and it was $250. So I got all my tax documents ready and made an appointment with someone people seemed to be ranting about saying he was good...he was nice etc. JJ is his name. When I got there he did my taxes and In the end he prints everything out and shows me that he's charging me $550. My mind was blown!!! I told him that I got three quotes and they were all $250. He says "well you know you have this and..." then he stops mid sentence as he grabs the copy of my DL from the printer and walks back to his desk and says nothing more about it. My case is pretty simple l have only myself and claiming three kids. Not married, don't own a business, I was filing ONE W2, I'm not itemizing anything and there are no special forms to fetch. I logged into my IRS account to answer his questions about the child tax care. The whole ordeal took about 45 minutes. I walked in happy and having a good feeling about it... to walking out confused and feeling ripped off. He didn't explain the fees until the very very end when things were already being printed out and ready to be turned into a little booklet. I said f it. Whatever I just won't return to liberty tax no more and I will also make sure to tell my co- workers, friends, family, and friends of friends how they will get ripped off as well and not to go to liberty tax. Every year I work with JJ at the Almaden location via email. It's wonderful to have people whom you can trust to file your taxes.

Despite numerous attempts, filing of taxes was done so late we had to file for extension. Once done, they asked me questions that TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA are asking better, at a lower price. The offer of $99 turned into $400 for 1 year. Now it turns out they may also have missed a big deduction despite knowing about it. Worst tax advisor I've ever had. read more

I seriously question the 1 and 2-star ratings. I have been coming to the Almaden Liberty Tax location since 2011 and get nothing but the best service. JJ really knows his stuff and got me double the money back vs. if I had done it on my own. I always do my taxes on Turbo Tax ( I just don't file), and bring it in to compare. They follow very strict COVID protocol and I felt completely safe in the office, and my appointment took about 90 minutes. I'll be back next year. read more

I went here for the free double check of tax returns included with esmarttax premium package (Liberty Tax software). The storefront looks like what would happen if Saul Goodman opened a tax office; it's seriously tacky. They do have a kids play area though, which I'm sure is nice for those who need it. When I arrived, they let me know that my tax person was running about 20 minutes late, and a guy with longish blonde hair volunteered to look over my taxes and answer questions while I waited. He's the reason this isn't a one-star review, he was really nice and gave me some helpful pointers, but ultimately couldn't do the double check because he didn't know the software. Then JJ was finally available for my actual appointment. He wasn't able to load my return into his software, after two tries he gave up. He wouldn't look at it through the website, or go through the papers with me to answer one specific question I had about stock sale reporting. Instead he tried to sell me on re-doing all of my taxes (which I already completed myself)for $225. I mentioned that I was entitled to a free double check according to the software package, he seemed genuinely surprised about that but still refused to help. He said he didn't want to be late for his next clients, even though they weren't there yet and he was 30 minutes late for me. He said I would have to call esmarttax customer service. Guess what? When I got home I found out they don't have a customer service number! Happy ending: I walked out, and spent a few hours re-doing our return on TurboTax, which lowered our tax bill by thousands of dollars. Highly recommend. read more
