Lidl in Middletown has gotten rather bad at updating their shelf tags. On my last 4 out of 5 visits to this store, there has been at least one item that rang up at the register at a higher price than the shelf tag. In the past, they have been able to make some sort of adjustment so I got the shelf tag price. However, on my most recent visit, the supervisor or manager or whoever that guy was told me that they were unable to give me the shelf tag price because the system would scan it at the higher price every time. So I just returned the item and let the matter go. The next week, however, I went to Lidl in Cherry Hill. They too had an out of date shelf tag, but this time the cashier was able to make the price adjustment quickly and easily by ringing it up as a generic "grocery" item. Which means what that guy at the Middletown Lidl told me was complete bullshit. That issue aside, Lidl is still one of the better places in town to shop. Prices (except for the ones that were jacked up recently without an update to the shelf tag) are usually competitive with Walmart. Similar to other discount grocery chains, they have store brands for the most common items to keep prices low. Aisles are spacious. There is no self-checkout at this location though, so lines could be long if there aren't enough cashiers on duty. read more

The cashier have bad attitude. They are the last contact with a costumer, and they are so rude at this store behind believe! Please hire people that are willing to work and have a positive attitude. I try my best not to shop at this store because of the cashiers. read more

This place is like a low rent Ikea of grocery stores. I've been to Aldis and Trader Joes before, so this carries the theme of self-branded items, fewer name brands, lower prices. Make sure you bring your own shopping bags! We popped in on a whim and picked up some fresh fruit that looked great. They have things like salted Irish butter for a ridiculously low price. In fact, prices are so low for many Lidl items that it is worth it to try to grab a few items just to test them out and see if they're still good without the brand marketing. It was kind of weird to hear the automated voice come out overhead to let you know of which lines to go to - very Space Odyssey like, but I supposed useful. We came on a late Sunday afternoon so it was not crowded at all. read more

I actually loved my first trip to Lidl and can't wait to go again. It's similar to an Aldi (i.e. bring your own bags and pay 25 cents for your shopping cart), but I found the selection to be a lot better - lots more stuff and more interesting items. Their produce prices are pretty amazing and they had a great selection - I have to say that was my favorite area of the whole store. We were in somewhat of a rush when we went - hope to go again soon when we have some extra time to peruse things. The only downside to our visit was the miserable 25-ish young woman in front of us. She didn't crack a smile (or even speak to her kid) the whole time she was verrry slowly boxing up her groceries, and when I asked her to move her cart so I could get mine around to load up (they have two counters in each line to speed things up - thank you very much!), she barely moved it and didn't even acknowledge that I said anything to her or even look at me. I still had to ram her cart a little to get around her, and we were all packed up and out of the store before her. Ugh - I seriously hate a-holes! Anyway, hopefully we won't run into anyone like her again. Lidl has an A+ in my book. read more

A new grocery store from Germany. Just as in Germany, Lidl is positioned as the competitor (and nearly always nearby) Aldi. But it's a bit different than Aldi. This is a larger store than Aldi, but still more limited selection than American supermarkets like Acme and Giant. There is a large center section with rotating, one-off items like clothing and household goods on special price. Better than Aldi: the produce selection seems larger. There are fresh meats. Not as good as Aldi: the specialty German items like chocolates are fewer, and the bread and bakery section is different. There is a fresh baked section with slice-your-own breads, but Aldi has a larger selection of bagged breads and pastries, some very good. Seems to have fewer gourmet cheeses. Prices are low but Aldi still seems to save me the most money on my weekly grocery basket, as long as I can live with the limitations of their selection, especially produce. Store has nice wide aisles, it's clean, good parking and it's large and well-lit. More open checkout aisle. Who will like it? If you want more produce selection and you have children, Lidl seems to be geared more to you. If you like the selections and brands Aldi's carries (their own clones of American brands, for example) you will prefer Aldi's. If you want bigger selection and one-stop shopping, you'll be at Walmart, possibly. For me, I'm still a big Aldi's fan, but Lidl has some attractions. read more

I was really curious to explore this store, and I'm glad I did recently. It was an adventure, and was quite different from what I expected. I've been to both ALDI and Lidl in Germany, and here in the U.S., their roles are reversed. In Germany, ALDI is classy low-end and Lidl is rock bottom lowest of the low. The Lidl I went in over there had dim, crappy lighting and big cases of plastic beer. It was one of the few places I went in Germany that I would describe as gross. I was surprised when I see this brand-spanking-new store that was quite grandiose and even sleek. The next shocker was the bakery section. Oh my god! Fresh-baked bread and rolls and croissants! There is some stuff I normally cannot get here in the U.S. And wow, the baked goods impressed. The first thing we did after getting home and putting away the groceries was to bust out the bread and dig in. It was so good, I texted my German friend who lives downstairs and she came up and we sampled the various breads and critiqued them. I was happy to find that the breads got her stamp of approval. I also loved them. Overall, this store is very similar to an ALDI...a high-end discount store. Like ALDI, the seafood section is very good and the offerings are much more sustainable than what you'll find in a typical store. The milk is cheap, there is a good selection of high-end cheese, and an outstanding selection of chocolate. I'd say that overall, the differences between this store and ALDI are subtle. The produce section seemed higher-quality, but also more expensive. There is something I really dislike about this store though, which really rubbed me the wrong way, especially relative to ALDI. ALDI is very straightforward...no games, no complex discounts or coupons or hard-to-decipher deals. And on this point, LIDL fails miserably. There was A LOT of "Buy one get one 50% off, MUST BUY TWO" kind of stuff. I hate this. Furthermore, what I hate most is that the label for each product would display the price AFTER the discount in very big letters, and then the explanations of the normal price and how the discount worked, were printed in much smaller letters. And on top of that, there were other schemes and scams...there were prices on items where you could get a discount only if you installed a Lidl app on your phone. What kind of bullcrap is this? I hate installing apps on my phone, junking it up and giving more corporations the ability to spy on me. I hate this intensely. If I were some sort of deity, I would forgive lots of sins liberally but I would reserve a special place in hell for people who set up convoluted discounts like this store does. And as a customer, I don't tolerate it. This is why I'm giving this store, which otherwise I would rate 5 stars, a mediocre rating of 3 stars. And this is why I'm not going to come back here as often as I otherwise would. It really rubbed me the wrong way...I had a feeling that the management of this store was disrespecting me as a customer, toying with me, making me play a stupid game that either I'll expend a lot of mental energy to play, or they'll win and make money off of. Either way I lose. I am a loyal ALDI fan because I can go there and I know what I'm going to get, no games. This place is luring me in with that awesome bakery section...but the shitty pricing practices turns me off that I would be unlikely to shop here regularly, especially when there's an ALDI right next door. Oh, and the worst part? The bakery section of the store is the section that is most polluted with those complex deals...so it's like, the aspect of the store that is my favorite part, and would be most likely to get me in the door, is the one where I felt the pricing system was most off-putting and obnoxious. read more

Alles klar. Wunderbar! The Schatzi loves Lidl because the German sourdough, pretzels, and brats remind him of home, so I come here often for my Bayern Bär's favorite goodies. I buy about 5 loaves of sourdough at a time. They hold up for weeks in the freezer, and still taste fresh after a quick defrost. The pretzels aren't as forgiving, but they go pretty quickly in our home anyway. At Lidl, the quality far exceeds the price point. read more

The place is pretty interesting for those people not used to the European model. It actually has a variety of items and goods that are sold at some of the lowest prices available. For example, this place probably has the cheapest spice racks available for common fixings, and it's where I'd recommend you get your salt, pepper, and any other major blends you need. You do however need to make sure you have a bag, as one of the reasons Lidl is so cheap is because they don't stock bags that much; only paper ones you the customer pay for. It bugged me the first time I went in, given that their presence was fairly recent, but once you know this things get better. There was some funny moments the time I went in there; the generator blew and all the fridges locked up to conserve the cold and went into what I charitably called "Riot Response Mode", since it reminded me of the rolling doors. All in all, good place, just note ahead of time this one looks a bit like a warehouse and the parking is... well a bit odd to say the least. read more

Lidl is a great store; between it and its' competitor Aldi (across the street) you can get everything you need for your family at a significant savings. Everything that we've tried we've liked. Fresh bakery is awesome, especially the breads. It's no-frills shopping; bring your own bags and don't expect to be waited on. You pack your own stuff up...but that's ok. Nine times out of ten I end up doing it myself at the regular grocery store. I'm not put out when I have to pack my own bags. Bonus: they have little shopping carts for the toddlers in your life. My granddaughter loves going shopping with me now. So happy they came to Middletown, now we need one in Smyrna! read more

Very messy store with subpar quality of food and merchandise. Been there on 3 occasions and it felt like a big box warehouse with chaotic atmosphere. The food quality was poor some items resemble dollar store level. Middle rows of the store resemble a flea market at the end of the day after a wind storm. read more

A limited selection of non-store brands compared to other chains. However the prices are very low. The quality is good. Bags are not free. There is a fairly large bakery. Overall, I would say it is a good experience in a clean store. And worth a trip. We would shop here regularly. read more

We went here on a whim and loved it!! The food prices are amazing, they have a large selection but limited amounts of certain items (for example, 3 types of cream cheese vs the rows and rows of choices at other grocery stores). Their bakery food is amazing!! And their produce is the best I have had from a store, even fruit that is not in season! I bought some raspberries, forgot about them for a week, and went to eat them thinking I would have to throw the majority away (most packs at the grocery store already have a few berries that are going bad unless you go somewhere like Whole Foods) but they were perfect!! Not one had to be thrown away, and I am picky about the ones I will eat! They also have some really discounted items, such as frozen foods, and unique candy and sweets. Nothing is convenient, except for this restrooms. I selected several items, many of which did not show the country of origin. When I was checking out the lady scanned my items and placed them behind her to the left. After I paid, I I had to go around behind her with my cart & once again handle all my items, put them in my cart & move off to the side, and place them myself into bags which they charged $0.10 each for. I handled the items once again, placing them in my car. I decided this would be my one and only trip to this store.i guess the process were ok. I must add it was 430 on a Thursday evening and the store was not at all busy. The people in the store had purchased only one or two items. read more

Get ready for a truly dystopian grocery experience with probably the best soft pretzel you can buy in the states for 69 cents. You are greeted by a clean expansive space full of food and non branded knock off items. My companion said most of the package food products look like movie set items. From the ceiling of this cavernous space is the PA which interrupts you with important news about which aisles are open. Ironically this is neither required in a check out space where you can easily see all check out aisle indicators nor is it accurate. In fact my largest beef with the store is after 20 minutes of listening to aisle announcements, including the one that shunted us and an elder gentleman into aisle 7 ...they promptly closed aisle 7 on us and made us repack our products into the cart and more to a new aisle that was announced as now open!! I felt terribly for the older man. It was like the machine in the sky didn't notice us ants waiting to be served. The other really bizarre experience was related to a person using a cell phone in the store. This activity caused the only employee sightings we had other than the cashiers . Out of nowhere came an employee with strong and insistent cautions - NO PICTURES IN THE STORE. But the man who it turns out did not really speak much English continued!!! So more commands were issued which also did not have much effect and then another senior employee appeared and ushered the phone user away. WOW Anyway the pretzel was delicious and the experience gave me lots to think about as I consider what American consumers want and need. read more

I'm an Aldi regular and every time I visit Lidl I feel like I am cheated on my beloved. The store is big and bright. Very few cashiers are open. Their bacon, beef ravioli and frozen pizza are good. Liquid shower soap is creamy and long lasting. Parking is easy. Some of their produce is overpriced. Plus, I don't like the necessity of downloading their app to get some of the discounts and I don't find their employees to be particularly friendly. When I'm in the area, I shop there. Not motivated enough to make a special trip. read more

I shop at Aldi and Walmart. But this is the second time going to Lidl. Good selection and prices. Has a bakery. The Fresh fruits & vegetables are nice. Frozen food is a good selection. Greeted by a very clean and spacious store. Check out - Cashiers friendly and a quick check out. Children friendly has a grocery cart for them to push and shop along with the parents which you will end up spending more. Between Aldi and Lidl they are limited to products unlike the American Supermarkets. Great store! read more

Store is really clean and well stocked. The prices and assortment rival Aldi. We love their rewards program for repeated shopping trips. The only issue we have is with their milk. It is priced very good but I goes expired up to 3 days before the labeled expiration date. It is very frustrating to buy milk and have to go out again and purchase it because the date didn't hold. Any other store we buy milk from does not have this issue. read more

We love this German grocery! Even our relatives & friend in Philly wants to come back here weekly! Everything is cheap and practical. They have different sale every week. Download the Lidl App and you will know what I'm saying. They also sell grass fed Ribeye steaks which most of the time goes on sale for $4.99/lb. they also have bakery on the premises where you can get fresh bread and pastries. Try their butter brioche & apple turnovers. They also have mini croissants with chocolates for .29 cents each. Lots of imported gourmet foods like cheeses, delis, greek, indian, mediterranean & french specialties. They also sell plants. Very clean and modern. A must! read more

This store is an absolute waste of time and dangerous to your health. The baked goods are open on both ends and I've seen flies all over them. Not only is that dangerous to your health but it makes the baked items stale! I was wondering if everyone knows that flies regurgitate over their food and then eat it. I complained to their customer service and nothing changed. I wouldn't touch those baked goods with a 100 foot pole. Let the flies and other bugs have fun. Oh- and does everyone know flies always rest on FECES. If you ever see cow poop you will see flies all over it. Also they never have advertised items that are good buys. I have gone there 3 times in a week for things that never are in stock and guess what- they don't give rain checks. However after the sale of that item is over, they have plenty of it for the higher price. Additionally, they have things in the ad that are for weekend only and if you don't pay close attention (as I did once but made them refund my money) you will pick it up on the wrong day. I decided to stop shopping there. I doubt they will be in business long. When someone gets sick on something from that nasty bakery they'll have a lawsuit and go under.
