All you need is to buy the annual pass at any store for $10. We got our pass from the visitor center and the gas station nearby also sells them. There are part of the beach that has soft sand, so a 4wheel drive would nice but not necessary. Bring a shovel incase you get stuck. Also, no bathroom by the beach and the closest one I saw was by the visitor center. There is an RV park next to the visitor center if you plan stay longer and comfortable. It's a 3.5 hr drive from Killeen which is way closer than San Padre and get the same experience. Will definitely take the kiddos for camping when the weather cools off and hurricane season is over.

The sand in the water is also soft and free of rocks (my kids took off their water shoes). The water was warm (end of July) and pretty clean (not clear). It was really clean on the first day we visited and two days later, some seaweed floated in. Ocean conditions change obviously but it was never unpleasant. There's a playground on the beach although we didn't actually go to check it out. $10 daily fee ($40 per year so if you're here for a week or something, consider upgrading to save). It gets crowded on weekends (naturally) so arrive early to secure a parking spot (before 10am is usually a good call). They have indoor bathrooms and showers. Loved this beach! The water was clear enough to see our feet (definitely not Galveston!), and the shallow area stretched far out, making it ideal for kids to splash and play safely in knee-deep water. We loved having a palapa for shade--it kept us cool all day. We brought our own chairs, which worked out great. Another big plus: parking was just steps from the sand, so there was no long trek with gear. Lots of swim area and space to spread out. We'll definitely be back!

Ya'll thought of everything anyone could possibly want and gave attention to every detail. The pier is beautiful and just draws your eye out to the bay and the gorgeous sunsets. It was the perfect place to sit and watch the fish jump, a few dolphins swim by, and the sun sink below the horizon. Wherever you choose to sit on the site, you can't miss the amazing and beautiful sunsets-easily the highlight of each day! The lush landscaping and beautiful palms make it a true tropical oasis. The site feels so private and is so quite, peaceful and restful. We also enjoyed walking the Rockport Beach and the Tule hike and bike trail, and were amazed at the herons and egrets roosting in the trees off Fulton Road! Thank you for all the info about those areas! How lucky we were to get to meet you and share this amazing place with you for a few days! Thank you for being so warm and welcoming and kind! TLDR: great staff and facilities for family getaway with opportunity to launch boat or fish from…read morepier. We had never stayed at a KOA before. What a pleasant surprise! I wanted to bring our fishing boat to the coast to take the family fishing but knew the entire trip couldn't be entirely fish focused as the kids, 3 and 5, along with my wife were likely to be unsatisfied if we spent all weekend running around the bay. I saw this KOA had a pool, arcade, shuffle board, ping pong, narrow beach and splash pad for the kids. What excited me was that it also has a boat ramp and very nice fishing pier/day dock. I thought this might be the perfect compromise of kids activities and the chance to take the family fishing without the risk of boring everyone to death if the fish weren't biting and/or I was unsuccessful in finding 'em. lol. We decided to rent a cabin for the weekend and headed down from Austin. The Port Lavaca KOA delivered! The facilities and staff were fantastic. Kids especially loved the splash pad and arcade. The cabin was very well maintained, air conditioned and comfortable. We stayed in one that had a bunk bed for the kids and a full bed for adults. An observation deck extended above the cabin to allow panoramic views of the bay and surrounding area. There is a restaurant on site with pizza, wings and a few other items. Laundry and shop with ice, food, camping supplies and beer/wine were also on site. About 20 minutes away is "downtown" Port Lavaca with a surprisingly large number of restaurants, including a couple that were somewhat higher end. Per the recommendation of the KOA owner/manager, Missy, we had a fantastic dinner at Taiyo sushi to partially make up for the lack of fish we caught ourselves..... Boat ramp was suitable for a shallow water boat, canoes, kayaks. Given the depth of Vaes and Matagorda bay, a shallow water boat is what you need the navigate in the area anyway. A bow rider, ski boat or pontoon boat would probably not be launch able here. A huge thunderstorm had hit the day before we arrived. As a result, the boat ramp had some sand and shells washed up that made launching tricky. Rather than risk getting stuck, I asked the staff at the office if I could borrow a shovel to move the sand out of the way. Two staff members showed up within 15 minutes with shovels and helped clear the ramp. Told me they'd do it, but I had intended and insisted on helping. Before we departed, staff allowed us to use a hose to flush the boat motor (salt/brackish water here) snd spray undercarriage of the SUV. They even offered to pressure wash the boat! Definitely above and beyond. In short, we all had a blast and will definitely plan another visit.

The next day my son in law told us that the campground had called and asked if they wanted to move to the spot next to us!! Of course they did, and it's been just wonderful! We initially planned a trip here to camp of the beach and once we arrived, we discovered that…read moregetting an RV on the beach here is impossible, even though other online sites recommend it, you heard the truth here on Yelp... it's nearly impossible to pull an RV onto the beach without risking getting stuck in the sand of the entrance. They do allow you to overnight camp in the parking lot area. And there is a campground (for a fee) that is basically the same thing, but with water and electric hookups. We came expecting to boondock, so we had our own power and a full water tank, so the parking lot area was fine for us. There was one other RV in the same area, so we weren't the only ones and it definitely wasn't crowded. The beach area here runs along the Colorado River. The one lane entry point to the beach area from the parking lot has soft sand. It seems like a lot of the sand was placed there to deter people from driving onto the beach area. Once you reach the beach, the sand is solid and can easily withstand an RV. It's all in that entry point that made it iffy and we just didn't risk driving across, getting stuck and blocking in all of the people who were already parked there, on the beach just before sundown. The most amazing thing about the park is the view of the Colorado River, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. I'm not sure what they call it, but there are huge square boulders placed as a dam of sorts. I walked all the way to the end right at sunset and watched the waves crash from the ocean onto the pier area, into the river. It was one most memorable moments of my entire two week road trip. The park itself has several covered pavilion/picnic areas. Each has a picnic table and a trash can. There is another pier area to the left of the park, I didn't walk along that way. Also, there is Matagorda Beach about a mile up the road. There you have access to the Atlantic Ocean, but you have to have a parking pass and it was super crowded. Here, at Jetty Park, you don't have to have a parking pass. There's also a nature center in the same parking lot area. It also has a gift shop. The attendant lady was super nice and informative about the area... she was the one who told me that I would need a parking pass to go to Matagorda Beach and that the closest place to purchase a parking pass was at Stanleys Grocery, just before the bridge.

Having been employed at the Disability Office at one of the Colleges in San Antonio for over five years, I became very familiar with the Federal and Texas ADA LAWS! Further, I am a 100% Disabled Veteran with mobility issues. Your small pet that is decked out with a chest cover that says ADA is not classified as a Service Animal. Look it up on the ADA website and you will find a wealth of information on Service Animals. FYI: I am a Dog lover! Doberman or German Shorthaired are my favorite! Please research the laws before you go. Here is some general information I copied from a website; "Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Texas law, a service animal is defined as a dog (or in some cases, a miniature horse) individually trained to perform specific work or tasks directly related to a person's disability. Emotional support animals are not protected as service animals." When you see people at HEB or Walmart or any other business, with a small animal in their cart or being carried, you can pretty much bet that they are not covered by the ADA. Please take the time to read ADA Laws. One more thing. Any Business can "Trespass" you from their property for any reason. Once they do you must leave the premises.

We looked around Houston and everything was booked or rained out! So we found Goose Island and it had decent reviews! We decided to book a campsite for one night- our campsite was 201. When we arrived my goodness!! I've never seen so many deer - one minute outside of the park, there were about 5 deers hanging out- not scared of me or my car or the noises. It was beautiful! When we entered the park, we first was looking for our campsite and drove in many circles- it was in the "wooded area" so it was a bit hard to find! When we arrived it was around 3pm And we started setting up camp. I am thankful the parking was right in front of the campsite but also that whole area I think 201-204 Is shared. I was lucky it was Christmas so no one else Booked the area next to us but it wouldn't have been as fun if others did! We stayed overnight- everything went well as planned! One thing I didn't like the restrooms were driving distance or a longer walk away but this was an amazing weekend getaway for us! In the morning we checked out the pier area. It was nice and very different than our campsite area! Highly recommend this park even for a daytime park!

Very windy the time we spent here but sites are spacious and some not level at all, but all wort effort. Many very large rigs can hang out here and chill, bbq, and fish. Great spot! Texas did it again! Great spot. We pulled in on first come first served basis. And hikes in park too!
