I worked with Guy Menahem on my immigration status. We started the process from being out of status to all the way to getting my citizenship. When I first came to Guy's office, he was located on Canal Street, NY, had his own office back then. I cannot say anything bad about him because he always: - called me reminding about our upcoming meetings; - emailed/called about any missing documents; - spent time with me in his office working on my paperwork (most attorneys do not spend enough time with their clients, they delegate the job to their assistants) - gave me a good payment plan; Remember, a lot of attorneys are really hard to get a hold of. You might get tired of calling their office and talking to their front desk attendants. Guy would email, call or leave a voicemail. It was just pleasant to talk to him, he is not arrogant like some others. I went to a few other attorneys before being referred to Guy, I have seen lawyers who look down clients/potential clients who are in tough situations. Plus, he speaks a few other languages besides English. That helps him understand your culture a lot better if he happens to speak your language. From my personal experience, there was never a case where we forgot to include some evidence, or a material, or a form, etc. when sending documents. He always went through the forms (or anything that we were sending to the USCIS) a few times thoroughly. If we did not include anything, then we simply did not have it at the time, but he never forgot any attachments. That is one of the main things you want to make sure of, because there are so many cases where lawyers mess up and clients bear the consequences. When you talk to him you will feel his friendliness, his broad and specific knowledge on immigration cases and laws. He went to Duke University, I think it was in top 5 law schools when I talked to him the first time. Last, I never doubted his knowledge or expertise. Have you ever had that feeling after talking to a lawyer that gets you thinking: "Does he/she really know this area in depth?" Guy never gave me that feeling. I paid for a 1-hour consultation with Doug and walked away with little to no useful information or assurance. My questions were answered with very generic, high-level and ambiguous responses. I was simply referred to an online definition of what my TN classification could be defined as, rather than specific advice on my documentation provided. The whole consultation was extremely dry. Felt like I needed to pry to get anything out of him, otherwise we would've sit there in silence for an hour. Overall left a very bad taste in my mouth. read more

I had a $200 consultation but did not come away with great information which was a bit frustrating. The consultation was very high-level, and I felt like Doug came into the conversation with an opinion formed on minimum information (despite me giving him additional information live). Felt like he was annoyed at me for asking additional questions and providing context - "I don't understand why you would ask that.", "I haven't seen that situation before." etc. Another example of feeling like I was being brushed off when asking questions ... I asked him what TN classification my job / resume might fit under, he responded "I don't fit you anywhere, it's whatever you would be classified as under TN" ... but he didn't ask me anything about my job or degree or experience! So it just felt like I was asking a blank wall. Overall for a $200 consultation, he did not ask enough questions to fully "consult" so it felt more like I paid $200 for a guy to give me very high-level opinions stated as fact. read more

Absolute waste of time and money, I would prefer ZERO stars based on thus far contact with the firm and Douglas Lightman. Staff should be removed and replaced with a voice recording on loop cause that is all the staff is doing, they are not listening to my concern but keeps repeating "the attorney will email back at this earliest convince", now my questions were "is the attorney available?" "can I schedule a call?" "when is the attorney's next availability" "I prefer he call me when is his ready instead of email" and so on.. but the reps answer was the exact same no matter what the question... if you are not going to listen to my question but keep repeating exact thing again and again, voice recording is incredibly better because I will know its a machine and hang up. I prefer call over email, you should be able to accommodate or should have been upfront at the when I called there as a prospect. For the general audience; I am trying to speak with an attorney on phone, because 1. the emails are just back and forth. 2. the information the attorney has provided have already found on simple google search. read more

well I didn't have a great experience... It took 5 phone calls in 10 days to finally got the lawyer on the phone ( he had to call me back of course). And he had no clue who i was. Neither name or story! i wonder how he got my number with half the infos. Then all he did was cutting me when i was answering basics questions. So rude! if you have no time don't take a client on the phone, you are not running a food delivery! I wanted a lawyer to help on my immigration issue and they said they couldnt help me... disappointed i the least i can say from a immigration lawyer. What i need is so baseic i m a little shook. EDIT after comment: I have left my NAME email and all infos asked when i called including why i called to the receptionist just to be clear and also I call 3 times and got 2 calls from you. so 5 phone calls, if that s much better service for you. I gave my NAME each time so the minimum you should know is my name. You may feel like you did your best but you didnt help me no matter how you choose to write it. i dont more of an idea on what to do and i have to call another lawyer. Usually not one to judge a place by the person who picks up the phone but this guy was RUDE. didn't know what he was talking about (i needed to replace my green card and asked him some questions) and I'm pretty sure he got offended when I asked to speak to a real lawyer. not helpful at all, if they have someone so incompetent answering the phones then I am reluctant to try their services. avoid. Update: Just got a call from a guy from Lightman (pretty sure it was the same person who answered earlier, but when I asked for his name he said it was not my concern) who proceeded to admonish me on my negative yelp review. When I asked him what the purpose of his call was, he said to recommend "i think twice before posting deceitful postings". Doug and Lightman Law Firm helped my wife and I obtain our marriage-based green card. Coming into the process, I was unsure if my wife, a Brazilian national who overstayed a tourist visa, would be able to get a green card through our marriage (I am a US citizen) due to her overstay and denial of a previous visa. Doug and his firm gave us a consultation and confirmed that everything looked good, then promptly helped gather our documentation. We met with him before we filed, and he answered all of our questions and put us at ease. Pricing was reasonable, though I did have legal insurance through my job at the time. It took a total of about 8 months from filing to receiving the notice for the green card interview, and along the way, I had a few things arise that I was unsure about. Just about every time I had a question, Doug responded very quickly via email with his guidance, and helped ease our uncertainties. When the interview notice came, Doug gave us a prep session to make sure everything was in order, and we requested he attend the interview (there is a fee involved). At the interview six weeks later, he came prepared and ready to help us. While meeting with the immigration officer at USCIS, a previously-unknown issue with my wife's visa was brought to our attention by the officer (it incorrectly stated she was married at the time she received her visa). After making sure everything regarding the issue was thoroughly documented at the interview, Doug gave us a thorough breakdown of the possibilities and next steps. He even offered us a ride home after the interview (we don't own a car, and the interview was not far from our apartment; we gladly obliged), and left us with kind words of encouragement which helped our confidence despite being caught off-guard by the visa issue. Luckily, the issue never manifested itself, and we received the green card and approval within a few days of each other, albeit some six weeks after the interview. Overall, our case was relatively simple, but when a complication did arise, Doug stepped up and was ready to help us. He is ethical, straightforward, and willing to help, and his knowledge of immigration law is thorough. Douglas Lightman made getting an h1b visa a breeze. Prior to meeting Doug, I had spoken with immigration attorneys who made the process seem extremely tedious and downright impossible. Doug explained that the process would not be too difficult if my employer and I would just promptly provide him with the documents he requested. Someone called me back within the hour and when I started to ask them questions about my situation I was told "I don't have 30 min to explain the details of this process with you" they told me they would send me an email with details about the process so I could "educate myself" before I waste their time. When I questioned why they would call me if they didn't have time to talk they said "This is not a good fit" and hung up on me.
