Great little independent pet store. They have a wide variety of pet food and if they don't have what you want on hand, they will order it. I enjoy using their self-serve pet wash. At home, bathing my 20-pound dog can be a challenge. I have to bend down, which puts a strain on my back and legs. Their water pressure is excellent, and the blow dryer is top-notch. The shampoo selection is also great. However, I think $15 is a bit steep. read more

We've been buying our pet food, dog treats, toys and whatnot at Lil Pals since moving here in 2007. It's the only dedicated pet store in town and the surrounding area. They have a loyalty program for dog food, buy so many bags get one free. Today I brought all three dogs in for nail trims. I held each one tight to get them through it. The employee was understanding and gentle. No one bled. They walked in scared and left acting like nothing happened. It was a good experience for all of us. Not exactly sure why there is bad reviews on this store. Plz keep in mind this is NOT a corporate store, just a guy in town catering to the people in town. He does open on weekends so commuters can shop there during that time and honestly, after spending that time in traffic, who feels like shopping?? Owner is always very nice and helpful, store employees more than happy to help you if you have any question, washing stations are always cleaned after a usage (unless someone was waiting and just took the spot). This place is always so great. I have a lot of animals so I visit this place often and every time it has been a great experience. The staff is so helpful and answers all my questions. If they don't have an answer to something they look it up to help me which I feel is great service. Although the prices can be high on somethings. I know the quality is good and I can return it if it doesn't work out. I love the dog wash they have here, I take my dogs often and it's convenient and at a great price. You can find practically anything you need here. I have dogs, cats, and a bunny and everything I need being in one location is so helpful. Definitely recommend if you need pet supplies. read more

You just lost our business over a $4 aquatic snail. I purchased two snails this past Tuesday afternoon and one did not make it. Which is not the issue. That night and the next day, still no movement. So went to the store on Wednesday afternoon and spoke with a friendly, pretty (I think blond) lady who first sold it to me. She told me to give it a day and if nothing then to fish it out, smell it and lightly press the trap door to check if it was dead...and to bring it back for an exchange if it was. I live almost an hour away so I waited a day, still no movement so I took it out and smelled it. Stunk badly! So I waited when I was coming back into town, again I live an hour away. I came in today, four days after purchase, and spoke with an unfriendly, unhelpful, unempathetic girl at the counter. She told me I needed the receipt (which I did not even leave with when I purchased it since it was a $4 snail x2). It also had to be within 72 hours even though I had been in contact with the store about the situation. I was going to buy another snail so I'd have three total plus the wafers, but she refused to budge. I tossed the dead snail on the counter (inside a water bottle) and she said "have a nice day". My response was not as nice as I walked out. I buy supplies for my cats, reptiles and fish there. I won't any longer. Neither will my entire family. FYI Both of their shells were not in good condition upon purchase. Perhaps your snails need calcium blocks. I was forced to give it one star, it should have been zero. read more

My dog got hot spots and I didn't know what to do. I asked the staff for help. They gave me a new food, and some spray to rub on the hot spot area. She has been fine ever since. My bark baby was in need of a bath so I thought I'd give Lil Pal's Pet World a try. It is a very small place but packed with lots of pet necessities, food, treats and some live small animals. Customer service was great and very helpful. Now onto the reason I went there. They have a two station wash tub area in the rear of the building. It looks very dated and the sink area is a bit high if your a 5'-2" or shorter person. A step would be nice or if they should ever renovate, perhaps a dip in the from of the sink would help with the height issue. On the plus side, the air is warm from the blower which is a great selling point. Everywhere else I've gone they use cool to warm water and cold air to dry (inhumane in my opinion). No wonder most dogs hate baths at all the other places. The shampoos and conditioner were nice smelling and well stocked. I would suggest putting a clean towel station close by and perhaps put sample snacks as a treat for the pups when their done, perhaps if the pups like them it can generate sales. So far so good! New to town and seeing this is the only place to feed my animals, I was happy to see their array of items! You could also wash your dog there which was a bonus. We buy dog food and all things bearded dragon and so far so good. Sometimes things are a bit pricey but supporting a local business is high on my priority. However, I would recommend checking your mealworms before leaving. Sometimes they can have more than a couple of oldies. Still 5 stars because when I told them the next time the mealworms were double checked and quite honestly, it was the best mealworms (size large) that our little Lazy dragon has had. I've been back and forth about my review here. Let's just start with, this is the only pet store in town. Their hours do NOT cater the 90% of locals who are commuters. Meaning, nobody can shop during their hours because their DRIVING or AT WORK. I also do not understand..at all...why they open so late..... I've spent hours just waiting for them to open, when honestly I could've drove to gilroy just to get to a PetSmart. I rather shop local, but man do they make it HARD for you to do so. Also, their prices are INSANE. I've found multiple items, that are 20-30-40 DOLLAR mark ups compared to online or other websites. I can't believe they don't price check to find a medium $. I've walked in and walked out so many times after seeing I could get the same brand cheaper somewhere else or online. Anyways disappointing as this is Hollisters only pet shop. They really need to step it up before a bigger chain comes in and steals their business. read more

Giving only 3 stars because my snakes got mites after i bought coco bedding from this store. I had no new additions to my collection and my snakes definitely did not have blood mites before hand. I do not 100% know forsure if they got mites from the bedding I purchased here, so I will not claim that I absolutely know it is from this store.. Although, I do believe it is from the bedding I purchased. Luckily I caught it early and was able to treat my snakes quickly. Please do not be scared if you DONT own snakes.. mites are species specific so this will not affect you or your animals if you do NOT have snakes. If it wasnt for that, I would rate 5/5. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful, every single one of them. Unfortunately I will not return becuase mites can travel pretty far and I am scared for my snakes to get them again. Normally I wouldn't leave a review if it wasnt a good one, but other snake owners should just be cautious when buying bedding for their reptiles. read more

People who work a 9-5 job don't even have the time to make it to this store anymore because of their shortened hours. 5:30 PM is such an unreasonable time to close, especially during this time where everyone is starting to go back to work, especially full-time. I always try and shop local, but I just will not shop here again. I have been a long time customer of this store since I moved to Hollister. For months I have put up with their steep prices and "less than pleasant employees" so that I didnt have to drive to Gilroy and could support a local business. Well the other day I was getting my car washed next door, so went in to buy some dog food and a new toy for my dog. I was looking at some toys and my son was 5' away from me when the employee (older woman) comes over and tells us that my son is not to play with the dog toys...they are for dogs, not kids. REALLY??? No other people in the store, totally not making noise or running amuck and gets in trouble. When I ask her what the problem is she rolled her eyes and said something to the effect of this isnt a playground. When I showed her we were buying things she walked back to the counter. We bought our things and left. I really cant believe how bad the customer service has gotten there overall. Been going downhill for awhile, but this is an all time low. read more

I called to see if they had an idem in stock. I was placed on hold. It was taking a while and they were closing soon so I drove to the store. When I got there they were not busy and I asked if they had what I was looking for, the whole time my phone call was ignored. On a different trip to this store I got my dogs nails clipped. The "groomer" came out and while I held her he clipped her nails right in the middle of the store. The nail pieces were flying in to the bone boxes. It was unprofessional and un sanitary. read more

I don't think my dog has ever been this clean! I went in to bath my 98lb lab/Dane mix and ended up leaving with a completely different outlook on the food I've been feeding my dog. This store was recommended by a friend and I completely see why he was so insistent that I give them a try. UPDATE: I wrote this review a while back but forgot to post it. So now, 4 visits following the initial visit and I am even more convinced that this is THE place to bring your beloved pet! They are so informative about every product they carry and when, in rare instances, they don't know the answers to your question they spend the extra time to find out. read more

These people are good by my book. Price variances are sometimes okay, but I mostly try to buy bulk to keep costs down. Love their selection of toys. They always seem have an unlimited supply of toys. They also have a tendency to run out of high demand things like flea/tick meds, Angel Eyes and certain organic treats. Staff is super friendly! And unlike the Rainforest Petshop, which thank goodness closed shop, this place doesn't smell like feces. YAY! read more

I bought a pleco and a snail from this shop 7 days ago. Now the pleco is dead and the rest of my fish have ich. I went in there today to buy a hater and medication to treat the ich. They told me that plecos don't get the ich. Not true. I just found a link that shows a pleco with ich. My tank didn't have ich before I put this fish in it. Now, not only did I pay $8.00 for a fish that died, but I just spent another $28.00 for the hater and treatment. Thanks. I'll make the drive to Gilroy or San Jose for aquarium needs. read more

Being disabled and on a tight budget, it's hard for me to travel to Gilroy or even afford good quality food for my dog. So, I look for the best prices and gauge where I can get the best value. The store was clean, the staff was super friendly, and Ashley the assistant who helped me was super! She was friendly, listened carefully to my needs and walked me through the store describing the pros & cons of different food brands. She even offered a sample to see if my dog liked it. He thought it was a treat ~loved it! I found the prices comparable to larger stores and got a great deal on a 40# bag of top quality food! Regarding the animals for sale: The pens were clean, the pets looked happy and healthy and although the prices were way too high for the breeds they had, I'm not put off by the live animals they are selling. read more

I like this shop..Sure the prices are a little higher than petco/petsmart..but as a mom of three it saves me the trouble of traveling out of town. My kids love coming here to see the snakes lol I have ALWAYS found the staff to be very informative and helpful and frankly was surprised by some of the negative reviews... I come here ALL the time. Spend $75 to $100 a week between dog food and treats for my dog and because they ran my card too many times and zero'd my account out they told me I couldn't use my card again once the money was put back on there so now I'm forced to drive else where to purchase my dogs there food. 1st off.. i LOVE this little independent pet store! the owner recommended a dog food i hadnt heard of before & a year later its turned out to be the only brand my lab can eat w/o an allergic reaction.. he also educated me on cbd for dogs with independent printed research papers.. the employees are super friendly and helpful!! it's a hold out from the days before petco/petsmart took over.. independent, local stores are the best!! ps.. i did notice something brought to my attention from another yelp poster that i wholeheartedly agree with & it's easily corrected.. i hope the owner hears this in the spirit it is given, LOVE FOR ANIMALS, & takes corrective action.. the parakeet cage is VERY small & its PACKED w/ parakeets.. some even sitting on the floor of the cage as the perches are all filled with other parakeets.. the sales girl got a bit defensive when i asked about it telling me that the birds sell fast sooo..... hmmm??? that means what for the birds that dont 'sell fast' ???? THOSE BIRDS are still packed in there and sitting on the cage floor!!! DONT BE DEFENSIVE!!! ITS A SIMPLE FIX!! GET A BIGGER CAGE!!! Sad to say, but Petsmart and Petco take better care of their reptiles and amphibians than these people do. They need to educate themselves or have some sort of training for their employees because I have walked in plenty of times and seen animals in awful conditions n that just breaks my heart. I have literally had to go and tell one of the employees that their frog had dried up...and one of their chameleons once seemed very disoriented and sickly on the ground of the enclosure! and then the next day he was gone and i could only imagine what happened :( when I got my snake there they had mites, my baby horned frog that I got from them was being kept on dry soil, I had to stop buying crickets there cause they would give me a bunch of dead ones or they'd all die after a day plus many other things. I, like many other pet owners have made the mistake of purchasing animals and supplies from them and other chain pet stores out of pity for the animal and because it's the only pet store in town... n I don't usually post reviews, but I know that I won't be buying here anymore unless I see a change and they wont know unless people give feedback. My 10 year old son has been going in to by tropical fish for his new tank, most recently while he was deciding on a fish the male employee asked if he was done deciding or was he just wasting his time. Out for a drive in Hollister today and we wanted to check out this Pet Store. We haven't been here for a while so we wanted to see how things were going. When I walked in the 2 girls behind the counter said Hi and continued their conversation with a customer so I walked around looking at stuff, no one bothered to help me. They were too busy laughing it up with that customer. I noticed that they had a couple of cages of Parakeets that are way too crowded, like 30 birds in one cage. Being a pet store they should know that is not a good idea. It can promote illness in birds, not to mention stress. I felt sorry for them. read more
