Buyer beware this store! They are NOT the Lillywhites of old. Yes they occupy a landmark building in Piccadilly Circus. And they used to provide quality products once upon a time. But they are only running on past reputation now.
I bought 2 pairs of gym trousers by 2 top brands. I must admit that the quality of one felt a lot poorer than those I've bought from the brands' own store. Within 1 day of wearing the other one, it had lost its elasticity, kept falling down and I had to keep hitching it up. So I took the 2nd back after a week thinking I would get a refund and put that money plus a bit more towards buying from the brand's own store. I was barked at by an Eastern European sounding cashier who asked me in broken English what the problem was at the top of her voice and over the customer she was serving because I asked if that was where I needed to queue for refunds.
When she came to serve me, she told me the store doesn't give refunds - only exchanges or gift cards. After many attempts to explain and much argument, she said I should speak to the manager. I explained the problem to another Eastern European sounding manageress who told me - again in broken English - that they don't give refunds.
Either cultural or language barriers got in the way and I'm totally unconvinced that either of them understood the point I was making about the item being unfit for purpose which was adequate grounds for a full refund. I even said I wasn't attempting to return the other pair (which I was wearing to prove what I was saying) but was not happy to have paid for a second pair that I believe was of poor quality. I said I was not confident of getting quality products from their store and so I wanted my money back.
The manageress kept insisting that they would not give me a refund and, instead, gave me a complaints form. She even insisted that I had bought the wrong size despite me having told her that I always buy that size and had, in fact, tried the size smaller than the one I normally take but it was too small.
The Lillywhites I used to deal with - that provided excellent quality products and had a fair refund policy and excellent customer service - is a thing of the past. THIS store, on the other hand, is one of the new breed that sells cheap and cheerful, subgrade quality goods that appear to be either unsold seconds, unwanted items or are from poorer quality brands. And should Lillywhites claim that one of the attractions of buying from them is that they sell items cheaper than if the brand sold them, that is a nonsense claim since the brand would never sell such poor quality goods.
To add insult to injury, Lillywhites is NOT selling these items cheaply at all - I paid £27 for what would be around the £35 mark in the brand's own stores or from sports shops stocking better quality items. In any case, why would anyone want to part with even £1 for something that doesn't do the job it was intended for? And especially in this economy?
Lillywhites is not catering to the discerning customer and is on a no-losing streak with its borderline refund policy.
I wont be buying ANYthing from them ever again. I would not normally bother with this issue, but I am fed up with UK-based stores cheating the British public by selling them poor-quality goods - sourced from distant shores with dubious manufacturing and quality control practices - at high UK prices and telling them that they are "getting a bargain" and that we "live in a throwaway society nowadays". If these items are such a bargain, surely Lillywhites should be happy to refund them as they are resaleable . And if we live in such a throwaway society, then Lillywhite should as willing as they expect their customers to be in throwing away this rubbish and providing better value for money. read more
