Why build a new racecourse when there is a perfectly good one in Limerick already? Because of the building boom! OK, enough of that cynicism. It was my second visit to the new Limerick Racecourse on this occasion and it cemented my opinion that its a fine racing establishment. It was easy to get to from the motorway and there is a handy set down area in front of the entrance, which was where we dropped my folks off before we parked the car. Inside everything is nearby. The stands, the parade ring, the betting ring, the stables, the bar. It's layed out very well. It's also brighly painted, no horrible cement walls and steps. Is it better than the old racecourse, you bet it is! You bet? Bet? Get it?? read more

History
Established in 2001.
Limerick racecourse opened in October 2001 to a record crowd of 18,000. It is the first built from scratch racecourse in Ireland for 50 years and has first-rate modern facilities in the Hugh McMahon Stand. The previous course at Greenpark closed in 1999 having held racing for 130 years. The present course is built on the site of a stud farm 250 acres of which is occupied by the racecourse. Limerick racecourse has something for everyone, a race meeting to suit your style, pocket, taste in music, taste in beer, taste in jockeys. In fact racing in Limerick probably hosts the most varied series of meetings of all the courses in the country.
