Dancing professionally makes one very prone to injury. Because our career depends on our bodies and…read morekeeping it in tip top shape, dancers and athletes need a very special doctor. I got injured during rehearsals one time and sprained my right ankle really bad. I couldn't walk properly and I could barely rotate my foot, which scared the living daylights out of me. My teachers, knowing I lived in the south, recommended I visit Sprain and Strain along Zapote Road in Alabang. The clinic is headed by Dr. Raul Canlas, a noted expert in sports medicine who was an athlete himself, so he understands the pains of someone leading a very active lifestyle. He's only around Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with him, if you can wait. He consults regularly with UAAP athletes and, although he hasn't himself delved into the world of dance, several dancers have turned to his clinic for physical therapy and regular check-ups. He definitely knows what he's talking about and is very particular about injuries and their treatment. He understands that recovering from an injury isn't just the damaged area healing itself, it's also about making that area stronger to prevent it from happening again. And, just a personal thing, I love that he didn't demand I stay away from dancing for a month or something. He understands that staying away from practice could damage my progress! He instead advised that I do go back to the studio, pointing out which exercises would be safe for me to do, and which ones I should avoid during the recovery period. My sisters and my brother, who are martial arts athletes, are also regular clients now! Ask for Dr. Canlas and you'll be in the best of hands. :)

Looking for a fun workout to break your bodybuilding routine? HIT Arena pushes your explosiveness…read moreand endurance for athletic conditioning. It's something different versus boring and repetitive movements you'll do at a regular gym. There's a class that starts every hour and newbies are welcome to join. Get your first session free! Just a tip, call in advance to check if you can avail your trial class. Applying circuit training in the routine, your body will be gasping for energy during 45 minutes of what-did-I-get-myself-into and charged fits of Spartan brawn! Bring a towel and a bottle of water. It's perfectly located along Aguirre aka BF foodie haven so reward yourself with a perfect post workout meal.

But more than just those things, I felt awful. I was slow, I slept poorly and overall felt so unhealthy. I felt like I needed to make a switch to another form of exercise that would have me back to where I was years ago. I needed to find my own drill sergeant, someone that would make me do rounds of painful exercise and see to it that I finish strong. Aware that I was too hard-headed for my own good, I headed to Hit Arena with no idea about what they would make me do. After 30 minutes, I was severely hit. There is nothing sweet about this type of workout and the instructors don't tell you that it will be easy. In fact, they tell you that it will be difficult but once you understand the motions of this high intensity workout and see the effects on your body you'll soon know why they don't take it easy on you. It's go hard, rest briefly and go hard again type of training captured in 3 but very short brutal workouts. The instructors explain to you things that you already know but tend to forget such as why donuts are bad and make you experience why they are bad based on the number of burpees they will make you do to counteract all that evil sugar. It's a great workout for those who want to get serious at being fit and for others in dire need of some Spartan training.
