BLUF: The beloved Lincoln Memorial is even more of a show stopper with the addition of exhibits, a gift shop and restrooms in the undercroft. Of all the times I've stood at the base of the Lincoln Memorial, I've never once wondered what lay beneath it. Like everyone else, I was focused on climbing the iconic steps to see President Lincoln. But after more than a century, visitors can now explore what has been hidden below all along. Known as the undercroft, it's essentially the memorial's basement or a massive structural space built to support the monument above. Its 65-foot-tall concrete columns were engineered to keep the memorial standing firm on the soft, swampy ground near the Potomac River. Today, the undercroft features a film, exhibits, restrooms, and a gift shop, but the real showstopper is the opportunity to look through glass panels and see the monument's enormous structural supports up close. It's a fascinating reminder of the hidden infrastructure of DC. The exhibits were neat and included features on what it took to design and build the memorial as well as the various historic events that have taken place there. I also liked the exhibit that debunked myths about the statue of Lincoln. There are only a handful or so of exhibits but they are all well curated. There is also a brief film, currently more of a teaser for a film coming in 2027, about Lincoln and the monument. But still, it is the views into the undercroft that have me in awe. The Lincoln Memorial is probably one of the most visited sites in DC. For a little more peace, consider visiting in the evening or early morning. Popular activities here include sitting on the steps to enjoy the views of the reflecting pool and Washington monument as well as posing for photos with the Washington Monument in the background. There isn't an easy way to get to the Lincoln Memorial. Because parking is limited and the closest metro stop is probably a mile away, it's best reached via walking or as part of a tour that will drop you off at the site. Many people rent scooters and bikes but I am fuzzy on whether or not those are actually allowed on the sidewalks in this part of town and I don't think it's safe to ride in the street. Plus, if there are crowds, you won't be able to ride through them anyway. Definitely no riding anything on wheels within the monument sites.
The Lincoln Monument is a sight not to be missed in DC. There are no time limits, there are no gates obstructing the view. There are a lot of steps that you would need to climb if you planned on going to the top and getting as close to the memorial as you can. On my visit to the memorial, a little bird decided to perch itself on top of Lincoln's head, and it proceeded to sing there. It was kind of a sweet moment to witness. It would fly away, and then it would return and start singing again.Around the monument you'll find copies of speeches and signage reminding you that this is a place of reverence. I wish more people read the signs because it was a little loud in there. People have mentioned that you're able to see the reflecting pool from this and it's true.
What a beautiful beautiful place ! This was our last stop so we were exhausted from all the walking and initially didn't wanna walk the steps but thankfully we did. The view was beautiful ! They had bag pipes there with military personal and it was a beautiful moment. The music brought tears to my eyes, I'm not in the military but if I was I probably would have cried. The music was emotional and beautiful. Great stop and a must see!
Profound experience every time. Great to see young people visiting during spring break. Weather was beautiful. Situated one end of the national mall, the memorial is a reminder of the principles that guide our nation. I was able to visit during sunset, a beautiful time of day, and love the views, both of the memorial and the views from it.
Happy Juneteenth, 2026! Do you believe that all people should be treated equally? If half of the people who lived in our country believed your perspective was wrong, would you still stand up for what you believe? Would you be willing to put the entirety of your reputation or even your life on the line for something you strongly believe, like the right to freedom or equality? The belief that black people should have these rights too was strongly advocated by Abraham Lincoln, clearly showing his high ethical character. When I was a little boy, I read a small children's book about Abraham Lincoln. This book provided several interesting facts, like that Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky (which was actually really small), and that he was self-educated. Information like this really inspired me as a young boy because it showed me that even a man that did not inherit wealth or a prestigious family status, like me, could become a great man if he was self motivated and had a respectable work ethic. This little book also explained how Abraham Lincoln was instrumental in freeing the slaves in America, something I could not really understand as a young boy. Although this country still has a lot to accomplish before attaining complete equality, we certainly would not have made the great strides that we have made without Abraham Lincoln's direction, and Juneteenth would not even exist. It amazes me to think how hard Abraham Lincoln had to work to lead this country toward racial equality. If you would like a great reference on this, please see the movie "Lincoln," made by Steven Spielberg in 2012. One thing that is surprising to me is how long it takes society to embrace a direction that the government leads, like equality. Consider this: Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have A Dream" speech from these very steps, at the Lincoln Memorial, one hundred years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Martin Luther King Jr. was clearly addressing the social and legal biases that still existed against black people, over one hundred years later. One of the things I've learned about equality and discrimination is that someone does not truly appreciate equality until they have been treated unequally, and someone does not truly understand discrimination until they have been discriminated against. Most people would look at me, me being a white male, and ask me 'what could you possibly know about experiencing inequality and discrimination?' Unfortunately, a few different types of inequality and discrimination still exist in this country, one of which is focused on parental rights. And, most people would ask me this question because they are oblivious to the discrimination and inequality that most fathers experience after divorce. There is nothing worse than having your own children taken from you when you know that you are a loving parent who is also an intelligent, ethical, honorable, and admirable individual as a role model for your children. Sadly, the U.S. legal system and society as a whole still treat fathers as inferior to mothers, simply because of their gender. That is not only discrimination, but that is also a blatant inequality that STILL exists in this country. It is perplexing to me to think how much this country has strived for equality, and 250 years later, we still have a blatant inequality and discrimination against fathers at a governmental and societal level. (Reference: If you want more information and clarity, watch "The Red Pill," a 2016 documentary.) So, in addition to the ongoing racial inequalities, this is just ONE of the many other inequalities that unfortunately still persists in this country. In conclusion, I'm incredibly happy that the Lincoln Memorial was created, in 1922. I'm also happy that I was finally able to visit this memorial for the first time in my life this year, and show my respects for one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had. The Lincoln Memorial is a wonderful reminder of Abraham Lincoln's strive for racial equality, as well as a beautiful example of the way that the U.S. government and everyone in society should treat ALL PEOPLE -- equally.
This is perhaps the most iconic landmark in DC and one you must see. It's been shown in countless movies and is featured heavily in the Planet of the Apes movies as a sure fire way to know you are "not in Kansas anymore" if you get the drift... This monument is beautiful, well-kept, and crowded as hell. It's a long walk if you are coming from the main Washington Monument lawn, but is pretty and has plenty of sidewalk/walking trail with shaded tree-lined walks and plenty of benches to stop. It's at the top of a small hilll/stairs and requires a bit of a climb and the inside is covered with the main statue of Lincoln. There is a small museum at the bottom that was closed when we were there and the reflecting pond was emptied of water with gates/fences all around it.
The Lincoln Memorial honors Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, who was martyred for his contribution in leading the U.S. through the Civil War and eventual freeing of approximately 4 million enslaved Africans and their American descendants after the Emancipation Proclamation. The Lincoln Memorial, at the moment, is the furthest memorial west of The National Mall (with the Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial, currently under construction, being adjacent to and slightly further back along Constitution Avenue. The memorial is a little over 100 years old, but you couldn't tell considering its relatively pristine condition due to use of marble and granite in its construction. The stairs of the Lincoln Memorial is the platform of the iconic MLK "I Have A Dream" speech. Normally you can find visitors and tourists sitting on the stairs of the memorial. The Lincoln Memorial is a feature itinerary stop for tour groups, many of which normally a minimum of 25 people. The memorial is in the final stages of completing its $69 million project of a museum and exhibit underground, giving more of a story and construction history of the memorial. The best time to visit the memorial is at sunset and night when it is illuminated and the top of the stairs presents a photo op for the Reflecting Pool, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol in the backdrop.
The Lincoln Memorial has a scale that does not fully register until you are standing directly in front of it. Walking up the wide marble steps, I felt the structure massive but still strangely quiet, even with crowds constantly moving through the space. The open design gave me uninterrupted views back across the Reflecting Pool toward the Washington Monument, and that long visual axis made the entire area feel far bigger than it looks in photos. The atmosphere shifted depending on the time of day too. I visited around sunset and then again at night, and the monument took on a much calmer, more reflective feeling. Inside, the enormous seated statue of Abraham Lincoln became the center of everything. The chamber felt intentionally restrained, with the focus pulled toward the scale of the sculpture and the inscriptions carved into the walls around it. I stood there for a while just taking in the weight of the space. The experience around the memorial was surprisingly fluid for such a major landmark. There was enough open space that people naturally spread out, whether they were sitting on the steps, taking photos near the Reflecting Pool, or slowly reading the speeches engraved into the walls. Even with heavy tourist traffic, the space still managed to feel respectful rather than chaotic, partly because of how open and symmetrical everything is laid out.
The epicness of Lincoln National Memorial and how large the Lincoln statue is can only be fully experienced by being there (and also hearing the echo in the massive chambers where it sits). Lincoln was an attorney but a lesser known fact is that he is the only U.S. President to have a patent in his name as an inventor (Patent No. 6,469, issued on May 22, 1849, for a device designed to buoy vessels over shallow water sandbars. Inspired by his experience with riverboats running aground, his invention featured inflatable, adjustable air chambers attached to a ship's sides - Google AI).
If you can, head here at night. We've been several times but today visited at night and it was so moving. I felt like to monument was more breathtaking in the veils of night with the spectacularly placed lighting. The smaller crowd also allowed for more reflection. A great national monument of American history.
Truly iconic. My only complaint is the National Park Service, could update the place where MLK gave his "I have a dream speech." It's marked but not really well. Other than that, it's always pleasant to go to this memorial. Inside the columns is a statue of Abraham Lincoln. Many of his quotes are up, and the figure is regal looking. The size alone is imposing, but I believe this is on purpose, as he was president during a tumultuous time. The steps are where lots of selfies are taken. You'll love the view of the National mall, the pool, and tidal basin off in the distance. Going here is always worthwhile. Crowds can be rather large. Your best bet is to park at East or West Potomac Parks. This has always been cherished, and for plenty of reasons. If you're in DC to visit, this one is a must! read more
Anyone coming to DC has to see the most recognizable memorial ever. It still didn't seem like it was extremely crowded the last time here. The Lincoln Memorial is dedicated to one of the considered greatest presidents. His career highlights are too numerous to list. You can get a glimpse here of some of them. Everyone knows about the big statue of Lincoln here. It's the main attraction of course, but there's more to see inside. The two side walls on the inside have quotes. On the south side is the Gettysburg Address. There's a few notable lines beyond the "Four Score and Seven Years Ago" part. On the north side is his second Inaugural Address. There's a few notable lines about how the country had to come together after the Civil War. Around the top of the memorial are all the states that existed upon completion. The outside remembers the Parthenon, immediately recognizable. Inside is a gift shop featuring many books. It's good if you're interested in learning more about Lincoln. This is a pretty expensive place to buy stuff so go to bookstores for better prices on things like this. read more

The name says it all. This historical monument that sits on the western end of the National Mall was built in honor of our 16th president of the United States.. Abraham Lincoln. Inside the monument sits a carved statue of the president and along the walls are 2 inscriptions of the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address. The Lincoln Memorial holds a sacred symbol in our nation's history particularly in race relations and for the Civil Rights Movement. The memorial grounds was the site of many important movements, including Martin Luther King Jr's -"I Have a Dream " speech, former President Harry Truman's address for the NAACP and many others. I asked myself, "why so many movements at this particular memorial?" The answer is quite simple. Unity. The Lincoln Memorial has always been a tourist attraction and is often seen as a symbolic center around equality. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was meant to match the symbolism of the Lincoln Memorial as a monument to national unity. And with that being said, it's no surprise to the countless marches and movements that took place here. read more
Outside the "Lincoln Memorial" a young guy selling water asked if I was thirsty. I said yes and with my drink, he gave me a lesson on the building. He told me, it had 36 pillars, that represents the states in the union when Lincoln was President. On top of that there are the name of 48 states. That's how many states where part of the US when the Memorial was complete in 1923. It was amazing to me how knowledgeable he was. To me it was just a monument. But for the price of a water, I found out that every detail in the Memorial gives honor to the country of our past. read more

Visit-The impressive statue of Lincoln sits while people in quantity of millions visit this site every year in DC. It's free and it's open 24/7. The best time I have visited it is near sunset. You can see exactly where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his speech while you visit. It's a very moving experience when you think of the history. Structure- The memorial embodies symbolic elements. The 36 columns there represent the states of the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. And the 48 stones above the columns represent the 48 states at that time. Overall it was designed like a Ancient Greek temple. Side Note- Parking is a few blocks away. Usually two hour free parking along Ohio Drive, SW which is along the Potomac River south of the Lincoln Memorial. read more
This is always a must stop. For me to stop I always envision what it was like to be there when Dr. Martin Luther King was speaking and people felt the need to be there. They did whatever they could to get there for hope . If you're ever in DC, you just go walk up and look out over the mall. read more

It doesn't get much bigger or better than the Lincoln Monument. Not only the site paying tribute to one of the best presidents but also the site of Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech. The site where he stood is right on the front of the monument. Lincoln is seated with the right side being his war side and the left his peace side. Again another good one to see at night and during the day. read more
This place was so surreal, honestly such great architecture and so much respect / peaceful ambiance around it. This was the most awaited monument to see whilst DC, and it did not disappoint. Also the views from up there were breathtaking, you could see Washington Monument & Capital Hill. The reason why I knocked one star off was due to the fact that the lift was not working, and I had a pushchair for my baby... so we had to leave it on the side with a very kind cleaning member of staff and walk all the way up the steps with the baby. Was more difficult than needed to be, but nonetheless was a great experience. Just wish they took care of that through maintenance, because surely there are disabled individuals in wheelchairs who need access too, or who would like to visit the memorial. Besides this, it is a must see! And I'm so glad I got to be there in person to pay my respects and just take it all in! read more

I loved this work trip! I got to tour the Monument, Reflection pond and Lincoln's Memorial! It was a great experience. It is free! It's all within walking distance and you can definitely get those steps in! The best past is it's so close to MD, VA and a quick amtrack or Uber! I had such a great time seeing all of my bucket list items. read more

A drive from all the way from NJ to DC just to see the amazing monuments that are lined up close to each other and Lincoln memorial was one among them. What inspired me particularly was the tall Lincoln statue that I wanted to see in person just to erase off the image of General Thade from the Planet of Apes and see Lincoln himself! Thus building is nothing short of grandeur and the best time to visit this beauty is just before sunset as it transforms from daylight to some beautiful lightings before seeing twilight. The tall pillars is a sight to behold for the eyes. Walk into the memorial and watch the majestic Lincoln sit in his chair, looking at the Washington monument. If you are at DC, don't skip this place. It's both a History and an architectural marvel that will continue to stand for ages. read more
I've visited this memorial several times and it's always so beautiful. If you visit on Thanksgiving, this memorial won't be very busy (the day after, forget it). Also, if you go first thing in the morning, the memorial is pretty empty so you might get some good photos. I've had some peaceful moments here but the tourists seem to forget that memorials are supposed to be a place of silence. Besides the Korean War Veteran's Memorial, this is another favorite of mine. It's just a beautiful memorial with a tremendous amount of detail in and around it. There's so much history here to reflect on, too. You also get a nice view of the Washington Memorial across from Lincoln. read more
There are few, if any, buildings in DC that inspire the awe that this one does. This building pays tribute it pays to the man who saved the United States of America from itself and began the healing process of a divided nation. Beyond this, he is credited with signing such nation changing legislation as the Emancipation Proclamation, Morrill Land Grant Act, Pacific Railroad Acts, and Homestead Act. This site is also historicly significant due to the events held here. From Marion Anderson's initial, and subsequent, performances here to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream!" speech, few locations would have had the added impact to amplify the message. It gets crowded fast and remains crowded all day. If you want to be alone with your thoughts while paying your respects one of our greatest presidents (and greatest human beings) I suggest a brisk winter morning shortly after sunrise. Trust me . . . . it's worth it! read more

We were in Washington DC during cherry blossom season last March and the city was amazingly beautiful. Lincoln Memorial Hall is one of the most famous and must visit landmarks, which is in lots of movie scenes. The stoned building is classy, elegant and magnificent. There is a statue of Lincoln in the middle of the peaceful hall and you can feel the mighty greatness while standing next to it. read more
What an awe inspiring place to experience. So much of our nations history has happened on this sacred place. The Gettysburg Address and his 2nd Inaugural Address are on each side of Lincoln. August 28, 1963 for instance is one of the most powerful. Dr. King's I have a Dream speech. It's really hard to soak it all in while standing on the steps but what a place to see in person & to have my girl with me makes it so much better read more

Out of all the memorials in this nation's capital, the Lincoln Memorial was my favorite. The Lincoln Memorial is an icon. You see it all the time in movies and pictures, but they just don't do it justice. You have to actually see it in person to have that breathtaking moment with one of our nation's greatest presidents. He doesn't have a 99 foot structure erected in his memory for nothing! For those who enjoy the background of what they're seeing, The Lincoln Memorial is full of symbolism and is well thought out. Unlike the iconic 'Rocky' steps in Philly, you actually get to something after you trek through the strenuous heat and stairs. There are 36 columns that represent the states in the union at the time of Lincoln's death. Another beautiful sight after reaching the top of those stairs? Turn around and you'll see recognize this scene: you're where Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous, "I Have a Dream" speech. read more
We visited in Fall season, and if you have the chance I'd suggest you do the same, as this can be a very busy area of the Washington Mall. The Lincoln Memorial is at the far west end of the Mall, and if you're like us, you'll find yourself walking from one end to the other making as many stops as your time allows. If you visit the Washington DC Metro website, you'll be able to see that the train and bus lines make stop/s along the Mall. I remember the 1st time we were in DC about 10 years ago, We bought what was I think a multi-day pass, used the heck out of it, and our car didn't leave our hotel the whole time we were there! But, back the the Lincoln Memorial. It wasn't as crowded, as I stated the BUSY tourist season was over. Such a beautiful building. If you're able, take the time to walk around like we did, and take in the different views of the city at every turn. Also, don't forget a good pair of shoes and have you phone charged, as you'll be taking SO many photos. read more
The Lincoln emorial is one of those places you have to visit when you come to DC. It's massive, it's intricate and it's historical factor combined what it stands for is something that we should really work towards. Sticking together. There were people from just about every country and state walking around, relaxing, sitting and having a good time visiting the monument. It was nice that there were a few guys outside selling water and cold drinks on a really hot day. Take the circulator bus to get here it's either a dollar or free. read more

It's truly unreal the feeling you get when you're here at the Lincoln Memorial, a place where so many significant, historical events occurred. If you're in DC, this is an absolute must. Make this memorial a top priority. I've been to the Lincoln Memorial so many times that each time I visit, I feel more attached to it. It's the more popular of the memorials and sights in the national mall, so expect a crowd of people. But it's definitely worth a visit. Also, when you do visit, like with all the memorials here in the mall, be respectful and reflect in silence. I really wish visitors would do just that, and take just this one break away from talking. Once you look out from the memorial, you can see the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument across the way. It's a nice walk to and from here around the mall area, as it's located central to all the other sights. There's a small gift store inside. I love this famous landmark and everything that it stands for. read more
Awe inspiring- What is a trip to DC without a trek to the Lincon Memorial. He quietly watches over his republic that is aligned perfect with the reflecting pool, monument and on the other side, the WWII memorial. The majesty of walking the marbel steps to the top, and taking time for some quiet reflection is well worth the trip alone. Dont forget to take notice of all the details, especially complete oath of office. Bring lots of water on a hot day! -Zuk read more

Most Yelpers have already pointed out the beauty of the Lincoln Memorial and why it's such a sight to see. The massive statue of Lincoln, the famous words of his in both directions next to it, and the iconic column structure itself are all beautiful and wonderful. In addition to enjoying those things, be sure to soak in a moment overlooking the National Mall from where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech and where so many other amazing moments in history have occurred and will occur. Take a walk around to the back of the Memorial (no extra steps - just go around like a wraparound porch) and soak in a view of the backside of D.C., including a side view of the Kennedy Center and a spot on view of the Arlington Cemetery, including a decent view of the Eternal Flame. It's a bit far out but can really be seen, especially with a zoom or binoculars of some sort. The overall view is a nice sight as well. Spend some time here; don't just go for a Lincoln viewing and a selfie with the former pres. There's so much more to this spot. read more
8/10/21 On 4/23/2020, the Reflection Pool by the Lincoln Memorial was drained of water. Today on Saturday August 7th 2021 the water in the pool is back, but I don't recommend going into the water. Although I did not go up the steps to see Lincoln, I did see him sitting in his chair. I can still remember kids climbing on his legs for a photo, or was that the adults that wanted that photo? It matter not, Security guys are on the lookout for this atrocious behavior. It was very busy by the Lincoln Memorial and I chose to keep my distance. Still, I had to get some photos. Great day for a stair climb to work one's booty, but sadly, today is not that day. read more
I don't think you can really rate this iconic memorial poorly. I mean really, this is one of the things you think of when you think of DC. It's a must stop. It's pretty amazing how huge the Lincoln memorial is. I absolutely love coming at sunset when there is less people and you get amazing views of the reflection pool. read more
