As others have noted, the Lincoln Park Zoo is totally free. For a free zoo, it's well maintained with sprawling exhibits both indoors and outdoors. Exhibits include both viewable areas and private, out of sight areas where the animals can choose to spend their time not on display. As much as zoos can make me feel sad for the animals, this was a bit reassuring. The staff doesn't force any of the animals to be on display at certain times. They're free to "roam" within their areas. This does mean, however, that seeing certain animals is not always guaranteed. We didn't get to see the polar bear or penguins, for example. We did get to see lions, several species of monkeys, sea otters, a sloth, a giraffe, a bear, flamingos, and more! We even got to see the zebras with their brand new one-day old baby. Such an incredible sight. Hours can be limited (they closed at 4pm on Sunday) so plan ahead. Street parking can be tough and the paid lot is not cheap.

The Lincoln Park Zoo is fantastic for being a FREE zoo! While I think there are a few more superior free zoos in the USA (like the St. Louis Zoo and the Smithsonian Zoo), the Lincoln Park Zoo still is a true gift for the Chicago community. I have a few quibbles I need to mention to explain why this is a 4 star Zoo, but overall, my boyfriend and I spent a wonderful 4 hours here in June 2026, despite it being a VERY busy and crowded visit. We both aren't massive fans of birds and generally zip through bird exhibits at zoos, but we were very impressed by the bird exhibits at the Lincoln Park zoo! The big central space is a great use of land and we think the organization and layout of the zoo are quite good. And of course, I fell in love with nearly every animal in the zoo! I could have stared at the chimpanzee exhibit all day in particular. Now for a few not-so-great things I noticed. Sadly, both times I used the bathroom at the zoo, they were dirty and stinky and messy. Also, we saw only like 5 caretakers the entire 4 hours we were there. And of course, the food and drink options are varied but everything is crazy expensive! So remember to pack your own food and drinks. We spent $20 on two generic chicago style hot dogs at one of the stands. That's wild, pun intended!

We had an amazing time at the Lincoln Park Zoo! Visiting from South Carolina, we passed the zoo on our way to brunch and our Lyft driver let us know that entry was free. We walked over afterwards and the grounds were stunning! So many well maintained plants and flowers everywhere. I loved that there was a good mix of indoor and outdoor exhibits to give us an escape from the sun and bathroom breaks. We walked around maybe an hour and a half and were nowhere near seeing everything, so I would definitely return!

This is a great zoo and it's free! It's hard to believe because it's so wonderful! We did have to pay for nearby parking but the lot was clean and safe. The habitats are spacious. There were many animals out the day we visited. There are a variety of food and drink options for visitors. The Chicago style hotdog was yummy! Definitely plan to visit!

Can't believe this is free! What a cool and great zoo! It's better than a lot of paid zoos. There's so many animals, and it actually takes longer to get through than what'd you think! We didn't even finish going to the exhibits but had been there for almost 4 hours when it was closing. For me the highlight was the polar bear- it was a bit shy which made it all the more exciting when we saw it! The signage around it is a bit confusing- the waterfall area has the polar bear, and the other area has the grizzlies. Since they're next to each other on all of the signs it makes it seem like they're in the same enclosure. All of the animals have the ability to go inside if they want, so I'd recommend waiting and being patient, you may get lucky! I'd highly recommend this zoo- so cool!

I love the zoo. I've been to zoos all over the world when the boys were little it was always a first stop on any vacation. I was so excited when the hotel was literally across the street from the zoo. I don't know how they do it, but entrance is free and it's open every day of the year. It's not a small zoo either. It's quite large. It was a warm day in Chicago so I think a lot of the animals were sleeping. We did see the lions, the giraffes, and the gorillas. There was so much more to see. I just really wish I had more time. I love the zoo. I've been to zoos all over the world when the boys were little it was always a first stop on any vacation. One of the best things about the zoo is that it's completely free which makes it feel incredibly accessible without sacrificing quality. You can just walk in and explore at your own pace without worrying about tickets or time pressure. The zoo itself is beautifully laid out inside Lincoln Park and it feels more like a peaceful nature escape than a typical crowded attraction. There's a variety of animals to see without it feeling overwhelming. I liked how walkable everything is and you can easily spend a few hours just wandering between exhibits, gardens, and just enjoying the views. It's a great spot whether you're going solo, with friends, or on a casual date. Everything feels relaxed, clean, and well-maintained.

I'm a total sucker for zoos but this was so much fun! What a cool zoo right inside such a huge city! Absolutely beautiful and the animals were fantastic! The polar bear put on a great swimming show, absolutely loved it!

For a free zoo, this one is surprisingly super nice! It's inside a large park in north downtown Chicago, and you can quite literally just walk in. They have several large exhibits with animals including polar bears, penguins, various types of monkeys and apes, a reptile house, zebra/horse exhibit, bird enclosure, etc. It's really quite big -- even though I was walking pretty fast since I came late (4p, it closes at 5p) it took me the entire hour to walk through the whole place. And that excludes the indoor ape and bird exhibits, since those were already closed for the day! I still felt like I saw a lot, and there were a lot of families with kids etc. who'd clearly made a whole day out of it. I think that's a great idea since there are areas they can run and play while learning about animals etc. They also have a cafe that was already closed when I came but it's nice to have the option to get something if you're spending a lot of time here. Overall if you're in Chicago and have some free time/want to do something that's free, this is a great option to get some steps in and be in a nice park/see the animals!

With a wide variety of animals, clean and well kept grounds, and a large size, the free-of-charge Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the best zoos around and is definitely worth a visit. Opened in the 1800s, Lincoln Park Zoo is filled with historical buildings, statues, and displays on the animals that have inhabited over the years. Here, you'll find lions, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, birds, sea lions, and more. There are many educational displays as well as a cafe and a gift shop. The surrounding Lincoln Park is also nice and you can easily spend a full day here.

    Checking out the primate exhibit!

Came back here with my now two year old and he was in toddler heaven! From an adult perspective, there really weren't all that many animals out (this could be because it's still early march and too cold). For example, the Pritzker Children's Zoo, an exhibit within the LP Zoo, had no animals at all, besides the squirrels which my toddler was still very excited to see (lol). We did see a sea lion, lots of variety of monkeys, gorillas, and lions! Our favorites were the lions. So majestic! We also had a BLAST on the merry-go-round. I forsee lots more trips to the zoo as the summer approaches! Of course, it's free - so even if we don't see a LOT it's hard to complain. Parking was about $35 which for Chicago is not bad!

I was in Chicago visiting and checking out all the cool things that Chicago has to offer so we put the Lincoln Park Zoo on our list. This Zoo is free which these days there's not many things that are free. With that being said it was amazing how many things they had to offer. It is a neat kind of zoo they even had polar bears which was my favorite. It is not a huge Zoo but it covers all of the things that you expect a zoo to have. They also have inside exhibits with bats and also fishes even a hippopotamus. They have a gift shop on site where you can pick up some cool things. I picked up a magnet with the zoo's name on it which we collect from all different spots where we visit. I would definitely recommend the zoo you can't beat it.

I take my first grade class to the zoo every year for our end of year field trip, and Lincoln Park Zoo never disappoints! Though the picnic area was closed off this year due to the set up for Adults Night Out, there are still SO many places to sit and enjoy school lunches. So many of the animals were out and the weather made it a great day to walk around! The kids couldn't stop talking about all that they saw! We even got a little lesson about Red Pandas from one of the workers.

We were there a bit early and so most if not some of the animals were all out and that was so nice to see so I did enjoy it a lot. The only downside was the food the food trucks were closed and so the only choice we had was the outdoor one in the cafeteria until we did choose the outdoor one and the line wasn't even that long but the two boys that were there I guess they were new and it was a part-time thing it was so disorganized that we waited almost an hour for our food. The food was okay for Zoo food but I would eat it again it's just the long wait. But this suit was amazing I highly recommend feeding the giraffes I wish they also offered more animal encounters like feeding the goats and whatnot but I would definitely be coming back. The animals were actually rolling around and running around playing so my son loved seeing them. The food is super expensive, and any souvenirs were even crazier. We wanted ice cream but various places had their machines not working, for the amount of kids and the heat it was a let down but we appreciated the zoo for being so clean and shady. Parking is $17 in the north lot and $20 in the south. There were tons of busses but still ample parking. Overall a great visit. Be sure to check your local libraries for museum and zoo passes!

The crowd gets pretty bad around noon, and we ended up leaving shortly after. Concessions and snacks are pretty pricy here, they do allow food and drinks throughout most parts of the aquarium, just not around the touch tank and the open water part of the beluga and dolphin exhibit. Save some money and pack your own snacks and drinks as most areas are open to food and drink. It's a very stroller friendly aquarium, but waiting for the elevators to the wild reef exhibit can have about a 10-15 minute wait time. There are stairs down to the exhibit tucked away, but if you do have younger children be prepared with some entertainment while waiting for that elevator ride down, or have them take the stairs while one of you waits for the elevator. The lower parts has the play area meant for kids, so it's a good stop towards the end of your visit to tire your kids out. The elevators up don't have too much of a wait going back up If you are going to go in a larger group, purchase your tickets ahead of time to secure a time slot for the aquarium. It overall is a fun interactive aquarium that has a lot of play and learn areas for kids to explore and a lot of touch tanks for kids who are looking for a fun experience for the family. On the ground level there is a sturgeon petting area! I have never seen this much sturgeon that were so large so I found it pretty interesting! I would recommend reserving tickets. Unfortunately, about 15 minutes into the session, it started to rain so the group (around 10 of us) fled into the Chicago Cultural Center for the remaining time. I thought the CCC was interesting for about an hour but definitely did not have enough interesting areas to fill up a 3 hour photo shoot. This brings me to one of my complaints-the safari was supposed to be 3 hours, but it was only about 2 hours and 20 minutes. I'm sure it would be a better experience in Millennium Park but if you are planning to make the safari rain or shine, you should have a better back up plan. Also, b/c the CCC isn't brightly lit, this limited the settings people could use while taking pictures. Our instructor - Scott - is a student at Columbia and he had a good personality and did his best to engage the students and help them. I thought it was helpful that he had an iPad that allowed him to pull up a picture that illustrated the concept that he is explaining. He also was knowledgeable re photography. The one complaint regarding Scott is he clearly was out late the night before and still smelled like stale beer. Not a big deal to us, but I can see how that might bother some people. I think this class would be useful for someone that has a DSLR and only shoots in automatic mode or in program mode without understanding what is actually happening in the program mode. I'd say the majority of the class fit into this description. But, if you have a basic idea of how to set the exposure, what depth of field and what ISO are, I'd skip the safari and just walk around Millennium Park. The 3 stars is based on the Groupon price and if you are an absolute beginner. If you paid full price the rating would be a 2 stars.

The MP safari was beginner level, which worked well for my mom who was borrowing one of my DSLRs for the first time. As a more intermediate DSLR photographer, I got more familiar with my new camera and was able to talk lenses and other advanced topics with the instructor and students with the same DSLR Rebel I had. But the most beneficial thing for me was the fact that we spent so much time photographing the same subject (the Cloud Gate) over and over. Other yelpers lamented that there wasn't enough subject matter to photograph, and although that is true, the real benefit to the repetition is that you can take the same shot over and over and adjust your settings each time. Then when you go home, you can load the shots into the computer and compare the settings for each picture, and try to learn more about what settings work in which conditions. "Setting intuition" is something that I struggle with and having a slow tour through MP has already helped me to better predict how to set my camera for different lighting conditions. I would certainly recommend Chicago Photo Safaris to (1) beginners who own or have access to a DSLR camera or (2) intermediates who are either looking to become more familiar with their DSLR or use the safari as a way to experiment with settings, take home the shots, and critically evaluate them. The MP safari was NOT for folks who (1) want to take a bunch of pictures of different things, (2) don't own a DSLR or other digital with shutter speed and aperture controls, or (3) are easily bummed out by being outdoors on one of Chicago's many less-than-perfect days or indoors in one of our many old, under-lit buildings. As for me, I would seriously consider another Chicago Photo Safari when I'm in town in the future.

Best thing is there's no admission price. This makes it even more worth it for looking around once, and you can come back as often as you want if planning to come more times. Even though it's kind of small, it feels there's a lot inside and you can be here awhile. It's got an interesting history. The beginnings of the zoo started when it was established in 1915, and a birdhouse was built the next year. Over the following few years the animal collection grew. There were birds, black bears, buffalo, deer, elk, foxes, monkeys, and wolves. In 1933 the birdhouse was destroyed in a hailstorm, and the following year the Brookfield Zoo opened. They chose to refocus on native animals after this. A few years after this, mastodon bones and tusks were found in the park. These were put on display in the zoo. In 1950 a barn was built. The following years included the addition of a water wheel. Farm animals such as goats, as well as birds like swans have their exhibits around these. The more recent additions include cougars, as well as improvements to exhibits for reptiles and wolves. Also the zoo has a few resources for education. The ZooCiety has various activities and programs. Have to say it's a good zoo for the city. It's located in the middle of the park. This is particularly a good one for young children, but it's open for everyone, so it's also okay for adults or whoever.
