I have been to Linden Place many times and I thought it was about time to write a review of this beautiful colonial home and museum. Linden Place was built in 1810 by George DeWolf. When the sea was America's highway, the DeWolf family ruled along with the Browns of Providence, and as with the Brown family, the DeWolfs made their money in trading slaves. George's family and descendants occupied the house for 177 years until the Friends of Linden Place, a non-profit group, assumed ownership in 1988. Perhaps the most famous occupant was Colonel Samuel Pomeroy Colt, George's grandson. He started Industrial Trust Bank which later became Fleet and he formed U.S. Rubber which became today's Uniroyal Tires. This house is considered the "architectural crown jewel" of Bristol and it is important to the social history of the town as well. Walking around the house with a guided tour, you can hear and learn about the history of the house and the town, bright time and dark times. Learning about the slave trade is important because it was a part of our history, even though it was a sad one. The decor is exquisite, with the furniture, chandeliers, artwork and interior design set the same way it was in the 19th century. We have also enjoyed the outside grounds during wedding receptions, concerts, special events. The grounds are always immaculate so the events outdoors always shine. I walk by all the time but I'd never been in. I'd heard a rumor that as a museum, they didn't confront or wrestle with their strong early ties to the slave trade. But I recently heard that this is incorrect, so I decided to find out for myself. If you have avoided this estate museum, it is time you venture inside. The house built in 1810 is steeped in history and you will learn ALL the history, from Dewolf to Colt to Barrymore. The house is well preserved. I especially loved the bathrooms! I'm visiting my friend in Bristol, she's lived here for 6+ years and had never been to Linden Place so we decided to check it out. I didn't catch the worker's name, but she is on the board for Linden Place. She was so sweet, so knowledgeable, and told us so many cool facts. We didn't finish getting through the house because we had a reservation and something else came up before we came back, but I'm hoping we come back before I leave. The place is AMAZING, and if you are a history lover like me, you will love it! I definitely recommend; it has such an interesting past. It was like 3 or 4 floors, such an amazing house! read more

This mansion is full of beautiful furniture, artwork, and artifacts. We were lucky to visit when Christmas decorations were in place, adding to a festive environment. Downloading an app to guide you through this home made the tour that much more enjoyable and historical. It was lovely and I definitely recommend a visit. read more

Step back in time to this beautiful mansion in downtown Bristol RI. The mansion and the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. The people who volunteer and work at Linden Place are so nice and very knowledgeable. Linden place put on a lot of different events and everyone I have been to is amazing, so organized and very fun! Monday, I just went to the 4th of July picnic to watch the parade and it was a wonderful event. It was nice and casual and the mansion was open for tours. Every event they have there is definitely worth the price!! My favorite events, just to name a few, the Burger Bash, Derby Day and now the July 4th Picnic! Wonderful place that is a step back in time and teaches you the history of Bristol!! read more

Linden Place is very near and dear to my heart! I got married here on a Sunday in November 2012, a few days after Hurricane Sandy! Nevertheless, on our wedding day, the grounds of this majestic estate were perfectly manicured and swept of any debris! Even in early November, there were still roses in the gardens as well as ample leaves on the trees. Our guests were mesmerized by the unique, classy, and historical setting and had a wonderful time browsing the grounds and indoor museum during cocktail hour. All the professional photographs taken at this venue during our wedding came out stunning, and nearby Colt State Park added to the ethereal, storybook-like flow of the images. Working with the event coordinator, Susan Battle, was refreshing because she was so helpful in answering all of my many (taxing) questions and handled all logistics in the most organized and professional manner. Planning a wedding here was made all the more delightful with her help and useful advice! I would recommend visiting Linden Place when stopping in Bristol. It is a town gem that I hope is treasured and preserved for years to come! On a side note, I highly recommend this venue for your upcoming wedding. It is perfect for small or medium-sized parties of up to 120 people. We had 75-80 guests, and the venue was just right! In addition, to save on costs, I'd recommend getting married on a Sunday (as opposed to Saturday) and consider the off-season (Oct-March) ;) read more

My parents had owned a bakery across the street from Linden Place. Every morning I could see the building facing me and I always dreamed that I would one day get married there... and I did. Unfortunately although the grounds were beautiful and the ceremony went smoothly, the older ladies who were part of the staff to oversee everything (I thought to help) instead kept a close eye on me and acted as bullies and eventually ruined my wedding day. They actually brought me to tears... not sure if they were prejudiced to the fact I was only 20 at the time... but nonetheless I paid a great deal of money to rent the space. I understand that this is a historical building, but someone with class who appreciates history is going to want to have a wedding here... not a classless and disrespectful bride? I felt like I was in school and I was being punished!! It all started with them continually coming into the room I was given to change in and take photos in. They harassed my bridesmaids because one of them had a bottle of water for health reasons. Then someone had given my daughter a lollipop to cheer her up and she actually yelled at my daughter and I and made my daughter cry!! I hadn't even gotten a chance to tell my daughter that maybe it wouldn't be a good idea to have it at the mansion because my mother had given it to her when I was getting dressed. The lady screamed that it was not allowed and to take it right out of her mouth. I am a very polite and reserved, quiet woman so I did not argue or put up a fight because I follow the rules and knew it wasn't worth it and tried to keep it in as to not ruin the day. The final straw came when she came over and told the DJ to shut the music off an hour before the time we paid for (I was not told that they would shut the music down early when I was paying). The women also kept stalking me all night as if I was up to mischief?? even the wedding party, and guests complained about it and were appalled.I actually was so focused on their negativity I became depressed and just wanted the night to end. All of my guests had a grand time, which was nice but unfortunately I went home miserable and looked forward to spending time with my husband on our honeymoon. I can't believe that the way they acted brought me to tears on my wedding day. I certainly hope they no longer work there. I wish I could remember their names!! NOT the dream wedding I had envisioned all those years as a little girl.I can NEVER get that day back. read more

This is a very well maintained old home. Perfect for special events, I would most certainly think of this place if I wanted to host a special event. I went to Linden Place for the Taste of Bristol. The first room was called the ballroom. It was open and not too huge, it would be really great for small affairs. What really makes the place work though is the grounds. The grass is so well maintained and the beautiful sculptures outside add a nice touch. There is ample space for tents in the back too. I really liked it here, simple, classy and beautiful. read more

I came to Linden Place for a fundraiser event and it was remarkable. I loved the style of the mansion and grounds. It is old in a way that is unique and beautiful, not in a dirty grungy kind of way. My husband and I visited several wedding locations in the Bristol area along with my parents and in the end decided on Linden Place for its beauty, elegance, history, and proximity to downtown Bristol (it IS downtown Bristol), as well as for the professionalism of its management team. We got a really good vibe from the start and everything lived up to our expectations. Susan in particular was wonderful, acting more like a wedding planner with excellent recommendations for caterers, florists, bands, decorations, etc, which made the planning process on our end a lot easier. She even let us return to do a second photo shoot a few months later to capture some images that we hadn't had time to do the day of the actual wedding. The Linden Place mansion is absolutely gorgeous and the history intriguing. Our guests enjoyed guided visits of the house led by Linden Place tour guides before the start of the cocktail hour in the garden. Our ceremony took place at St. Mary's Church, just around the corner, and most of our guests stayed at the Bristol Harbor Inn. We had our hair done at Hair, Heart and Soul. The close proximity of all these locations made the wedding day logistics a breeze, especially for our guests who had two hours of free time between the ceremony and the start of cocktail hour. There was no shortage of activities within walking distance - plenty of outdoors bars, waterside walks, parks and boutique stores. All our guests commented on how beautiful the space was. The carriage house with its golden brick walls created a great environment for dinner and dancing. The overall ambiance was warm and inviting - not at all imposing or overwhelming like some venues can be, in my opinion. One last point is that there is now a new art gallery beside the carriage house that can serve as a backup cocktail location in the event of rain (which fortunately wasn't the case the day of our wedding!) I highly recommend Linden Place for both the venue itself and the quality of service and management. read more

My son and his new wife were married at Linden Place on September 3, 2011. Everyone at Linden place was amazing! Hurricane Irene had just come through and wiped out power in Bristol. Jim Connell, one of the Linden Place managers, was terrific-- he made sure they had a back up generator ready to go and held my and the bride's hand as we worried! Susan Battle, another one of the managers, kept communication flowing as we planned the event, and, again, was always willing to help us identify a solution for whatever detail we were addressing. As it turned out, the weather was gorgeous, the lights came on, and Linden Place had been thoroughly groomed of downed limbs and leaves. Everyone we worked with treated us as though their only concern was our happiness! THe bridal "suite" was lovely and a perfect place for the bride and her party to prep and primp. The public rooms were stunning. ANd whenever we asked a question or for help from the hostesses, the answer was "of course" or "let us do this so you can enjoy yourselves". I love Linden Place. If you have not experienced a night at Linden Place I highly recommend going around Christmas time. In December my favorite thing to do is head on down to Linden Place for one of the Michael Dimucci christmas concerts that is held there. The concert is held in the back (i thin its the carriage house) and you enter this open, rustic, beautiful space where you are greeted with a glass of wine. You chose your seats (trust me there are no bad ones) and the first half is Michael singing some of his favorite..... As you sip your wine, chills come over your body and you fight the tears back... Something magical happens.... Michael singing, its christmas, you are with loved ones in this GORGEOUS building and well... When you go, you will know what i mean....The second half is a fast and furious sing along... BE READY...(they provide you with the songs and lyrics and you quickly go from one song right into the other) Be sure to purchase tickets in advance for they sell out quick! My husband and I were married at Linden Place last month (October 2010). We chose Linden Place for two reasons. First, the reception space (what they call the "ballroom") was perfect for the simple-yet-elegant wedding we envisioned. It has beautiful wood floors, exposed beams and a working fire place-- kind of like an up-scale barn. It was perfect for a wedding of our size (about 100 guests). There is also a lovely garden at Linden Place, where we had planned to have our ceremony, but because our day turned out to be windy and cool we were married in the ballroom... and that turned out to be just wonderful! We had a roaring fire going, which really made it feel cozy. The other reason we chose Linden Place is the staff-- particularly the Event Coordinator Susan. Right from the first meeting, she was friendly and courteous, and as our planning progressed she always responded to our questions promptly. My wife and I were just married at Linden Place last weekend, and it was simply beautiful. We looked at a number of venues in Rhode Island, but we (and especially my wife) fell in love with Linden Place. The gardens and grounds where we held our ceremony are filled with whimsical statuary and magnificent flowers and trees. The mansion is charming and decorated with antique furniture. Linden Place, about a block away from the water, has a lot of historical significance as a one-time home to the wealthy Colt family (of Colt revolver fame); many presidents and luminaries have stayed there, as you will read in the mansion museum. We loved that Linden Place was elegant and sophisticated, but did not feel stuffy or pretentious or ostentatious the way some other venues in Newport and Bristol felt to us. Maybe you're more into that kind of thing, but we loved that Linden Place was full of personality and charm as well as elegance and sophistication. In all, we had a truly wonderful experience having our wedding at Linden Place, and we would recommend it without reservation to anyone considering it. The event coordinator Susan is an absolute pleasure to work with, and Bristol is a very attractive Rhode Island seaside town; your out-of-town guests will fall in love with it immediately. read more
