I had never heard of Lindygroove until my friend asked me to join one of the Lindyhop classes last month - and it was, well, interesting. Pros - Classes are informal and very casual. If you miss a class, no one will care. - Teachers are great at their craft. They are nice people, wonderful dancers, and clearly explain the steps - Classes are affordable and you sign up a month at a time - The dance floor opens up after class ends and you can hang out/dance afterward Cons - Parking can be hit or miss depending on the time you arrive - No one wears masks, despite how close your faces get. From bad breath to body odor, to sticky hands, you experience it all. The main reason I chose not to continue is that I take the "follower" role and followers mostly just get led. I don't think followers learn as much as long as they have a good rhythm and a gentle understanding of the moves - which makes these classes not very worth it for me. It could be considered a fun, social activity - but I think "leads" gain much more from each class. This is neither a pro nor a con, but the style of the class allows individuals to rotate partners pretty much every 2-3 minutes, so you end up getting to dance with everyone in the class. The types of people you meet range from great to worst dancers, super young to super elderly, and very polite to straight-up rude. read more

I've always heard about Lindygroove for years but never went until this week when I had a bunch of friends to meet up with. The Pasadena Masonic Temple is located in Old Town, across the Civic Auditorium off the (east) Euclid side abs there are parking structures all around. The cheapest structure is off of Cordova Street with $2 with validation. I was lucky enough to get street parking off of Los Robles. Entry is $8 cash and you have a bit of a choice of starters classes either in the main ballroom or off to the side rooms where signs are prominently displayed. There's no cost room, bags and jackets are strewn about the perimeter of the ballrooms and seem fine. Everyone there is in a great mood and ready to dance! The music is great, people of all ages, although predominantly 30s-40s, many of which are dressed vintage style for the event. If you check out the website it Facebook page, you'll have an idea what to wear! Also, if there is a birthday party for example, tables can be reserved (you bring your own treats)! My friend Prisca has been coming out to Lindy Groove for about 3 years, and at her suggestion I decided to see what swing dancing is all about. Strange how much stuff you miss... I've been living in Pasadena too! It's every Thursday night from 7:30 PM - Midnight, so you can literally dance that night away. With free parking and a cover charge of just $8 for hours upon hours of dancing, this is a great way to spend your Thursday night. Since my friend is proficient in dancing already, I went to the beginning class from 7:30 - 8:15pm alone. If you go alone it's not a biggie because they rotate you with all the different people there so you aren't dancing with the same lead. I felt kinda stupid because I wasn't catching on how to do the 8-count properly, perhaps people with a dance background will do better. I was having flashbacks to when I had tried out a step aerobics class. I was the dufus in the back, craning my neck around to watch everyone's moves and struggling to keep up. "And a five-six-seven-eight!" After the class, the house lights dim, the music plays non-stop. I gotta admit it's different, the saying "don't talk to strangers" gets thrown out the window. If you don't bring along a friend to be your partner, random people will come up to you and ask for a dance if they see you are standing around. This event is not for wallflower, shy people. I found in general, that the people at Lindy Groove to be welcoming. It doesn't matter what age, skill level or shape you are in, as long as you are willing to dance you're in. I have been swing dancing for a long time ... about 15 years. I love swing dancing and Lindy Hopping and my wife and I joke around that it is "the hobby we never quit" That being said, LindyGroove is our favorite. I have been with LindyGroove from the start 13+ years ago and have continuously loved this venue for one big reason: the owners love this dance and this venue and want everyone who comes to have fun. They continue to evolve as much as possible to do their best to make the experience enjoyable. And when you come you can just feel the love ebb from all the little details put into running this dance. I know the current owners well and they just continue to put a lot of effort into this because they are passionate about this. Because I know them and have an idea of what goes on behind the scenes, I could give many examples to demonstrate that they do this out of pure heart, but I'd rather just say come check it out and see for yourself. It is a fun and warm place to hang out and dance and be active and be social and have fun! For newbies and beginners: The beginners lesson is always packed with brand new people (probably 2/3 of the people in the lesson have never danced before) and the teachers rotate so people brand new to dance (or even not brand new to dance) will get a fun lesson and get a chance to meet people and be active. For more advanced dancers: The intermediate lesson is always pretty good, and it's as far as i know the only venue that offers free intermediate lessons (pretty much all others are only free beginning lessons). They rotate instructors in the area so every week you can get a taste of different teachers and their style. For everyone: And then the DJ'd music starts at about 8:30pm or so and goes until midnight. The ballroom is huge and the venue is beautiful. The parking is limited unless you want to pay. My experience with the class instruction is mediocre and slow. One instructor in Lindy 1 encouraged the class participants to ask instructors to dance for practice at the dance held after class every week. The same day I did and the instructor awkwardly made an excuse to not dance with me saying he needed to say "hi" to someone. The dance crowd is cliquish. Classes have to be purchased in a monthly series with no credit or option to make up for a missed class. I came here a couple Thursdays ago and I had the best time there! It was really scary because I have never gone to a place like this learning this dance that I hadn't even heard of until a couple nights prior. Luckily, my friend was willing to come with me and a couple of our friends were able to meet us there. My friend and I were early enough to catch the lesson. We were split up into males and females at first. It seemed manageable but once we started the partner work and the routine, it was a big jumbled mess (at least for my friend and me!) Everyone else seemed to be doing OK. You change partners after a little practice with them; my friend wanted me to be his partner the entire time because he was a bit insecure about his skills, but after some convincing, we finally danced with other people. It was then that I realized why I wasn't executing the dance routine perfectly; it was because my friend was not a good lead! He was probably more lost than I was. Not something you want in a partner. After the lesson, it just becomes one big dance! Like in high school except people actually dance here, and they're good! It's a bit intimidating if you're a novice like me. However, from my one experience, these experts are not arrogant and will give you tips on how to improve. Their skills are intimidating, yes, but it doesn't make me reluctant to try again. It just gives me something to look forward to - being able to dance like THAT! So if you go to Lindy Groove, make sure you have a good partner or at least one who is willing to dance with other people. If you go alone, it won't be a problem either because everyone here would be more than happy to dance with you. I don't think it's common someone will reject an offer to dance. As a dancer who drove down from Santa Barbara nearly every week for almost 5 years to go dancing at LG, I'd have to say that this is an awesome place to dance. Why the 4 stars, you ask? Well, cliques are hard to get into, and even after 9 years of dancing, I still can see that new dancers aren't well invited unless they've got the similar devotion to the art as those who've perfected their craft. Call me weird, but I'd prefer if people would just lighten up about their skills/leetness, put down their guards, and some guys would succeed at stop being creepy to the chicks people would just be more social and friendly... I'll step off my soapbox. As far as learning, I have no idea, I've never taken a class here, but as far as dancing, you've got a good range of people, good sized smooth floor, and danceable music. LindyGroove is probably the top weekly swing dancing venue in Los Angeles. I first checked it out with some friends either two or three years ago, and didn't go back much except for birthday celebrations (which are free if you sign up beforehand!). However, I started getting more and more into swing and blues dancing around the beginning of 2015, and I decided to try going to LindyGroove more regularly about four months ago. Since then I've been there almost every week, and really like it! Probably my biggest complaint is that it seems like people switch out every week, so it's hard to recognize people. There are definitely a number of regulars who hang out near the stage, but then there are lots of people I've never seen before each week. Maybe that's a good thing! But it can also make it hard for an introvert like me to feel connected. A definite plus to LindyGroove is the lessons. Before the social dancing starts each week around 8:30 (or 8:45 as they run late), there are free beginner and intermediate group lessons, as well as more advanced lessons for extra cost in their side room once the social dancing has gotten started. On top of that, they have instructors who can give you private lessons at a cost of only $10 for 10 minutes, which is a good deal for that sort of thing! If all that wasn't enough, when I go, I don't even usually find myself hanging out in the main ballroom. There, they have standard swing dancing with a lot of old classic swing music until midnight; but around 10 PM, once the more advanced lessons are done, the side room opens up for social blues dancing, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite things to do. Side room "The LAB" with different types of dance (Blues, Balboa, West Coast Swing, Soul) on different weeks. One of the best venues in the area, and definitely the largest. They have 10-minute mini private lessons with pro instructors which are $5 for your first time ($10 if you take another lesson with the same instructor) which are really neat. Definitely the cheapest private instruction you'll find. I haven't been to another venue that does this. Cool way to try out private instruction without paying through the nose for it. What a fun way to spend the evening on a Thursday night. The masonic hall is a great space and the jazz tunes they play throughout the night really makes the atmosphere a throwback to a syncopated heyday. There is a validated parking at the lot on Green St. Make sure to get your validation ticket before heading in. The classes take place in the main hall and starts around 7:30pm. Classes are part of the admission and will definitely get you started on your way. The free dance is where you can try out the moves you've just learned and try to learn a few other moves by watching the other dancers. Sometimes it is worth making the trek out to Pasadena on Thursday nights, but before you do, make sure you have enough energy. Lindy Groove is all about dancing: swing, balboa, lindy hop, etc. It's so much fun. You don't need a partner, but if it'll make you feel better, go with one. It's crowded. It's popular. It gets hot (maybe take a change of clothes, or at least a spare shirt). There is a water fountain, but take some water. There is a range of levels there from beginners to advanced competitors in swing. For beginners, it can be a little intimidating, but the only way you'll improve is to get lessons and continue to practice :) Because you will be participating in a social dance, it can be a little weird if you don't know anyone, but the only way you'll feel more comfortable and feel like a regular is if you go and get to know people. If you want to figure out how to get more involved in the community, contact the organizers and volunteer to sell tickets or go early for the dance lesson. Lindy Groove was so much fun! The vibe was super friendly. Tons of enthusiastic dancers-- that are actually around my age (20s)! Even though I've only been swing dancing for a month I had a great time and learned some new moves. Lots of guys asked my friends and me to dance so we had a great time just dancing the night away. The location is at Pasadena's Masonic Temple-- the dance floor was very spacious but it was OMG IT WAS HOT. There are no fans and if the A/C was on I (and many other people) were not feeling it. It was so hot that I saw many people armed and ready with their hand towels and if they didn't have that, they grabbed paper towels from the bathroom to stuff in their pockets. What's worse is that they don't offer any refreshments except for $2 bottled water (that actually ran out rather quickly and I can totally understand why.) BRING YOUR OWN WATER. Definitely. And a towel. Admission is $7, includes DJ'd music, parking & 1 hour dance lesson from 7:30-8:30. I didn't make it in time for the dance lesson, but I saw the ending of the intermediate one and I think I'd like to try to make it in time for it. And yes, it's free for you & 10 friends on your birthday-- and you get your own table with cake. I love the crowd here! There is such a fun, upbeat atmosphere! It's always a surprise who will be coming into town or who will be DJing, so I've been coming back for over 6 years now. For the more laid-back types, there is often blues or west coast playing in the "lab" from 10pm on. Sometimes there is even a funk or balboa night - it's really fun that they mix it up! They are friendly to beginners and have several classes available (including a free, weekly lesson) if you are just starting to get in the swing of things ;) They also throw some decent parties and treat you well if it's your birthday. This is definitely THE place to go dancing on Thursday nights. There is a pretty large dance floor but it still gets crowded...and seriously hot. If you hang out by the big fans in the front by the stage or near the doorway, its more tolerable. Wide variety of dancers here from beginning to very advanced. The floor is pretty good and most of the people are pretty nice, although you'll always find the clique-y old school dancers just like at any other swing venue. Also, they have multiple DJ's each night so there is a nice mix of music throughout the night. I've never taken any of the lessons here, but I've heard good things about them. There are also always a whole bunch of people doing their birthday dances every time I've gone. I think they do something with your birthday where you can get so many people in for free or something like that. My husband and I love swing dancing. We're relatively new to the area, and we're looking for a new place to regularly dance. We've only been to Lindy Groove twice, but it might be it! Teachers were knowledgeable and easy to learn from. There was a huge crowd, especially of beginners, for the lesson (7:30-8:30). Lots of people showed for the intermediate lesson too. Ben and Sheri were our teachers and we loved them. They really moved the pace along, and most of the guys in the intermediate lesson were pretty good leads. Hubby said the gals were less consistent followers. At 8:30, jazz DJs started playing music. The floor is huge, but got very full, and some of the dancers did not seem to know how to dance in close quarters. For the most part, people were friendly. Dance etiquette says everyone should apologize if there's a collision, but there were many people who just didn't seem to care. I guess I should not be afraid to dance more aggressively and take up more space. Parking is free in the garage across the street. And they dance until midnight. We couldn't that late, but we'll definitely be back. Maybe the busy floor will thin out a bit, later in the night. If you sign up in advance on their website (www.lindygroove.com), you and up to 10 friends can get in for free on the week of your birthday. However, if you bring a friend, or make a few friends when you show up, you will have a blast! The DJ's are varied, but almost all play extremely good music. They rarely have live music, which is why it's only $7 to get in. The dance floor is great. It has been refinished recently, and it's very nice to dance on. If you love to swing dance, then you will quickly become addicted to Lindy Groove. A great way to get started, is to plan your birthday party at Lindy Groove. Many of them are insanely skilled, but they're also incredibly beginner-friendly. As a lead, I'm never afraid to ask someone I don't know to dance, even though I'm probably not even in the top 50% of skilled leads in the room. I am a total beginner and had no idea what I was doing, but 99% of the people I danced with were incredibly patient and forgiving, even trying to teach me a few new moves. I came here with my best friend to celebrate the birthday of a mutual friend's boyfriend and had a Great time!!! For $7 you get hours of non-stop swing/lindy/various other such bathroom dancing with a really great group of people of all ages. If you come early, they hold beginner and intermediate classes, which is awesome if you are a noob like me haha :) People who are experienced dancers are super friendly and helpful to noobs as well. To my ladies out there- the guys here are wonderful. Friendly, courteous, gentlemanly guys. Super fun!!!!! Such a place to treasure! I came here for the first time last night to try a dance class and was more than pleasantly surprised. The dance instructors were phenomenal and were also pretty playful, so it wasn't a boring or strict class at all! They are very good at what they do and are super helpful in the case where you do feel lost. I never thought that I could do a swing dance, but by the end of the class, I felt like I had a little grasp of it! And the perk, the admission fee was only $8! If you bring your parking ticket, they'll even validate it for just one dollar! read more

This is a really nice place. The group instructors explained everything clearly and had us practice for a while. When the music started for open dancing, I have not seen this many people dancing at once. Strangers were asking others to dance, which you don't see in most of the clubs these days - people are too timid or arrogant. read more

I had no idea that this group existed! I had so much fun! For $7 you get a free one-hour lesson on the basic Lindy hop for beginners or you can join the more advanced group. There's also a fun warm up to get your body moving and to learn some basic steps. I was expecting the group to be full of advanced dancers who come all the time-- not so! The beginner class was PACKED and it was the first time for most people. There are a few people who joined the beginner's class who had done it before, but just weren't ready to move to the next level. And then there were a few guys who haven't moved on because they were just interested in meeting girls with little dancing experience. After the lesson, they have music (prerecorded or live band) and the crowd just starts to move. The place was lively, most everyone was dancing, and for the most part everyone was really friendly! I got asked to dance with a very experienced stranger who was very friendly and taught me some new moves. After the song was over, he graciously thanked me for the dance and moved on to ask another girl. And to think, I was expecting to be a wallflower all night! Lindy Groove is every Thursday except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. They update their calendar monthly. Parking is FREE! There is no dress code, per se, but the people dressed in 1920s-1930s clothes look so festive. It really makes the experience that much cooler! Note: wear flat shoes! Most people are dancing in Chucks, not heels. And you can move a lot easier and without pain. No food or drinks are sold in the facility, so if you're hungry or thirsty (especially after all that dancing!) make sure to BYO food/drinks. read more

Lindy Groove is awesome! $8 to get a short instructional and then to dance the night away...complimentary parking at the garage across the street....So much fun! I've been maybe 3 or 4 times, and one of my best friends went just about every Thursday over the summer. There are some very nice people there, the instructors break the dances down for you pretty well, they offer water bottles at the door for a buck (highly recommended, you'll get hot with all the dancing!) And it's in a pretty building. Now, I've never been western swing dancing anywhere else so I have no other experiences to compare it to, but I have had a great time each time I've gone. I like that there is a mix of experienced and inexperienced dancers. Since I'm one of the inexperienced, I don't feel way out of my leave, and yet there are also guys who are soo great leaders and they make me feel like I can actually dance haha. Anyway, I'm a fan of this place. A live band would warrant it a 5/5 but hey 4/5 isn't too bad! read more

Bring back my dancing skills, what little I had from my past experiences. So I checked this place out with my friend, who is quite the little Lindy hopper, and was actually a little intimidated at first. But they set you up pretty well here, I must say. First, they have a little warm up session, with a funny guy leading. This guy really helped me loosen up a little bit. Then they split you up into two groups for the lesson portion. I obviously went to the "beginner" side, with my friend heading on over to the "intermediate" side. The leaders were pretty good, although I got lost rather quickly. After about twenty minutes with some quick lessons, you're left to fend for yourself out on the dance floor. Overall, I'd say that this venue and set-up was pretty good. The fellow dancers are really nice, and the vibe is overall pretty fun. I wish I could say that I was a decent dancer after this one night, but I can't due to my lack of skills and two left feet. I recommend this place even if you don't get much dancing in, because I enjoyed just sitting back a little and watching the experts show us their moves. Next time I hope that I get a little more courageous and actually dance a bit more. read more

After a while, the DJ-only, super-elitist crowd, sticky floors, sauna-like temperatures and all-other-venues-suck mentality and negativity wears out on the spirit who seek connections beyond the swing-out. Kudos to the 10+ birthday dances a week. I prefer venues with great live bands, friendly atmosphere, engaging and welcoming people and places where you can learn the dance as well as get to know the person(s) you are dancing with. Sure it's cheap, but then again, you get what you pay for. read more
