If your cat or dog is struggling with digestive issues, I highly recommend trying out this homemade diet for at least 5-days. I tried everything from prescription food to acupuncture and ozone therapy but this diet seemed to do the trick above all others. My dog has also been having some digestive issues lately and ever since transitioning to this diet (using only one protein, instead of two as a well as a probiotic) she has been improving. I found Dr. Pierson's wonderful site, catinfo.org, after chancing upon a heartbreaking video called 'Goodbye, Nutmeg. Goodbye Forever.'. The link follows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUL_W4ABbvw It's about a little stray kitten with a highly infected eye that was rescued and taken to a vet, who gave the little girl the highly toxic antibiotic called 'Convenia'. The kitten immediately became lethargic after administration, then began to have nonstop and massive seizures. Once it's in the body, there is nothing that can be done to counteract what one would call 'side effects', which are actually 'effects' since they are very well known by many pet owners that have had their dogs and cats poisoned by this product. Massive petitions have come about to get this Pfizer drug taken off the market, to no avail. The company knows, and they don't care. They make too much profit on the suffering of humans and animals from their products to ever want to withdraw any of them from the market. The same company that makes Convenia also made the Covid19 shot that paralyzed my sister for life, along with my primary care physician, whose office is now permanently closed. Same with my best friend from high school, who then died 3 months later. They don't care. In the video, the kitten Nutmeg goes through horrible suffering until her rescuer decides that it would be too cruel to let her suffer any longer. It's very sad, so be forewarned. Dr. Pierson has a special link regarding the antibiotic Convenia, which is how I found her wonderful site. Dr. Pierson's webpage Catinfo.org was incredibly helpful three weeks ago when my cat was first diagnosed with diabetes. His first blood sugar test was over 500, and the vet immediately prescribed insulin which she said would run $300 a month. I asked her if I took two weeks to research and change his diet if it would harm him. She said no, so I read everything I could find, especially on catinfo.org. Wow, so much I didn't know about a cat's diet. Long story short, I found Tiki Cat, a wet cat food with 0 carbs. I took him off of dry cat food and treats immediately. He balked a bit at the food, but he was happy when I hand fed him. He's eating it very well now. I possibly switched him over to wet food too fast, taking about a week to do it, but he does seem fine. We had his blood sugar rechecked Friday night. Normal. His blood sugar is 140 and his Fructosamine is 277. The vet was stunned. She said diet works for cats who have a blood sugar 300 or under, but not 500. I have read Dr. Pierson's website: catinfo.org and found it invaluable to being a new cat owner. I feed all of my cats raw food based on the findings and teachings of Dr. Pierson much to the chagrin of my regular vet. My kittens have such soft coats and thrive with raw food and never have issues with digestion or other maladies that comes from eating commercial dry foods. I don't know if Dr. P still reads these reviews but I wanted to thank her for all of her advice and instructions on her website and believe she is a true gem. read more

Dr. Pierson's website is invaluable. Our cat was just diagnosed with Stage III kidney disease and it seems to be progressing fast. The vet we visited for 20 years (for all cats) retired and we can't find a vet who is engaged and/or willing to entertain diet and treatment outside of prescription diets. Dr Pierson and I have never met but she saved my cat , Nima's life without even knowing it. Nima was a rescued kitten in mid 2018 and only my second cat. I started feeding him high-quality kibble and the occasional canned food. He was just over 2 years old when at the end of April 2020 I noticed some strange bathroom behavior and thought he was constipated. Over the next couple of days it got worse until the eve of May 1st when I had one of the worst nights of my life. He was screaming in pain going in and out of the litter box until he just laid there. I couldn't touch him out of fear of hurting him even more. He was completely blocked: at 3 am I was calling emergency vets who quoted me over $7k to unblock him. That morning I took him to the local vet who wanted to charge me over $2k to unblock him but finally agreed to do it for about $1500. Nima was hospitalized and monitored and released only to have the same thing happen twice more with the exception that I caught it much earlier each time. The second time they unblocked him they charged less but refused to keep him to monitor him, and the third time they would not admit him and pretended they were full. They said he had crystals, he was overly stressed at home and would have this condition his whole life. They told me my only choice was to have him sent for surgery to remove his penis and give him a new urinary path. Before submitting him to a $6500 surgery and all the pain and risks that could come from it, I went on a Facebook cat group and told my story. This sparked a conversation about food and someone posted a link to Dr. Pierson's website. I think I read every single word on that website. Dr. Pierson recommended more water intake and as someone who had zero guidance from the regular vet who frankly seemed clueless about nutrition and diagnosis, I had been deep in research for minerals and cat food ingredients etc so water seemed a bit too simple but I decided to follow her advice. I bought canned chicken and really high quality canned cat food and started adding water to it. Fast-forward to today: it had been over 6 months since his last blockage and 9 months since the first one. Nima is healthy and happy and pees humongous pee clumps around 4 a day! Sometimes if I'm in the bathroom when he is using his litter box I laugh out loud listening to him pee because the force of his pee stream is so strong I have thought about Dr. Pierson often and just had to somehow share the impact she has had on our lives. I wish I had happened along Dr. Pierson's catinfo.org site before this week. I will be reading it front to back today. I would like to share with Dr. Pierson (I hope that you are reading these reviews still) my recent experience. I feed Core Wellness exclusively to my cats. The 2 cats shared 2 large cans a day, with a whole can of extra water added. Plus I leave out their dry in case someone gets hungry (Grayson was very food motivated, and ate a lot of the wet food, so I left dry out fr Mickey just in case he needed a little more food one day). My 2 year old, Grayson, couldn't pee on Dec 23, and according to the ER Veterinarian, he was "packed with struvite crystals". I felt like I was being a good pet mom feeding him this food. But I don't at all understand how this happened when I thought I was clearly getting enough water to them. In the end we euthanized Grayson on Christmas Day due to a blockage recurrence within 8 hours of his discharge to home. I've since read that there is anecdotal thought that Core Wellness might be associated with urinary crystals. So I wanted to share my experience with you. I miss my boy so much. I feel like a terrible cat parent and it has been 16 years. Minime just diagnosed with kidney disease. High blood pressure and blind, all in 3 days. Sent him home with meds. My cats have never met Dr. Pierson in person but are benefiting from her experience and knowledge in proper cat nutrition. We became cat guardians in August of 2017 and being dog parents left us with a lot of questions. I was feeding my cairn terrier Dr. Harveys which is semi home made so I began my kitten on the cat version. I knew that cats needed taurine which was not in the Dr. Harveys so I began adding it but knew I needed to learn more. A google search on cat nutrition brought me to Dr. Pierson's blog catinfo.org I read everything and then reread the information. We purchased a meat grinder and the supplements that were needed. We follow Dr. Pierson's recipe exactly. We adopted a 2nd kitty in October 2018. So now we have 2 rescues who came to us with thin coats and 1 had a bald spot on his tail. They are now thick coated and gorgeous. Poops are extremely small and dry with very little smell. I feel confident in the diet that we are feeding them based on the information we found on Dr. Pierson's blog. On another note our vet said that orange cats for some reason are more prone to gingivitis on their teeth. Both cats were starting to show signs of teeth issues when we took them in for their first visit after adoption. On their follow up visit a year later the vet commented on how nice their teeth look. We attempted to brush teeth with the brush that Dr. Pierson suggested but it was not working so well..so we wipe their teeth with a baby wash rag as suggested by our vet, but I believe the diet with the ground bones has really worked on my kitters. We consulted with Dr. Pierson about Fletcher who had diabetes and CKD in late 2017. I am sorry to hear she is taking a break from consulting and I hope everything is well with her. It was not easy to gather all the information to make the first appointment with her since Fletcher had a lot of records; however, she went through all the records of multiples years of treatments. She was very through and passionate about Fletcher's well-being and my other cats. She provided information that was very useful for his treatment and formulated food that worked well for him and I can make. Hi Dr Pierson my 15 year old female cat was just diagnosed with low functioning kidneys and has a abnormal bladder wall which vet stated could be due to inflammation and wants to put her on prednisolone along with prescription low protein dry food (she is on a raw diet currently). I haven't actually visited this veterinarian, but I use her raw food recipe for my cat, and wanted to rave about it. My 11 year old cat was diagnosed many years ago with IBD and recently had pancreatitis. He's been on the expensive special protein canned food diet until the pancreatitis. He was pooping himself to death. Diarrhea non stop, losing weight fast and eating non stop. The vet said to buy higher quality food. I found Dr. Pierson's recipe after researching raw food diets. This website needs to be the bible of cat heath and nutrition. My 12 y.o. female was diagnosed with diabetes and I was desperate to get her off insulin. Within 1 feeding of low carb food (canned Evo 95% chicken/turkey) we could ditch the syringe. I had been feeding her Iams weight control dry food her whole life and just thought that all neutered/spayed cats just always get fat. NO THEY DON'T. That stupid Iams was 35% carbs. Basically tweenkie food was going just in her mouth for 12 yrs. Unreal. My sweet girl lasted another 3 years after the diabetes diagosis and I had to put her to sleep for spinal condition and arthritis that was unrelated to diabetes. I just learned my cat has diabetes :( Pierson's website: http://www.catinfo.org/ has been an invaluable source of information for me right now. My cats, adopted from a shelter, had been on Hills CD wet and dry for years. Well guess what? That particular food (especially the dry) is loaded with carbs and it's not all that great for them. For a diabetic, it's almost like feeding them donuts and fruity pebbles. Pasquale (my newly diagnosed sugar baby) especially loved to gobble up the dry food like a little piggie. Looking back, at the shelter where I volunteered / adopted him from, there was a room of quite a few cats on this food. We used to call them "the turkeys" because they were fatter than the rest of the 100+ cats there. Furthermore, too many of these guys ended up becoming diabetic- we didn't see this happen nearly as often in the other cats. Of course diet has everything to do with it. Cats are obligate carnivores. Rodents, birds and lizards eaten in the wild are not dehydrated and don't have carbs. And who's ever heard of a cat eating corn and grain in the wild? Boy, do I wish I had read up on feline nutrition and the hazards of dry food much sooner. And boy, I wish Dr. Pierson had a practice and it was near me. After being pronounced diabetic, my vet prescribed Purina DM wet and dry for Pasquale. I declined the dry food after reading Pierson's eye-opening research. Even the "prescription" dry food (supposedly formulated for diabetics) is still too high in carbs (14g) and loaded with crap. Lots of vets aren't aware of this, because they're not well versed in nutrition and are brainwashed that so called "prescription food" = always better. Cats need water from food, and this is especially important for diabetic cats and those with kidney or urinary tract issues. Dry food obviously has an extremely low water content. On a dry diet, even lapping up the water bowl won't actually compensate for the water a cat doesn't get from wet food. Pasquale's wet DM Rx food cost me over $40 bucks a case and he hated it. Expensive does not always mean better, and no food is good if your cat won't eat it. It's not easy to avoid carbs with a diabetic cat, or to know just what you are feeding him. Pet food doesn't show the breakdown of carbs, protein, and fat on its labels like ours. Dr. Pierson has done hundreds of hours of research and created a list of nutritional values for cat foods which clearly outline this. You can see which specific foods are safe and which ones are not. I was shocked to learn that many of the cheaper commercial canned foods were actually better for him. Many had much better quality ingredients than the stuff I had been shelling out so much $$$$ for. With her list as my guide, I can feed my guy a diet that is safer, more species appropriate and healthy for him while actually spending much less than I would have on prescription or so-called "high end" foods. I can buy him food he likes and I don't end up wasting half of it down the garbage disposal. Don't get me wrong, feeding a cat an all-wet food diet is certainly not cheap. It will cost more than feeding dry, but to me, my cats' health is worth it. Pierson's site also has a wealth of information on diet relating to kidney disease, cystitus, urythral blockage / stones, IBS and other feline diseases. Felinediabetes.com has also been an incredible resource with trusted advice from vets, medical doctors and experienced diabetic cat caretakers that live and breathe feline diabetes every day. I don't know what I'd have done without them. Pierson's website is very well known and recommended by this wonderful online community and so many cats have done better following her advice. Change in diet can dramatically lessen insulin requirements and help diabetes to be controlled. Many cats have even gone into remission as a result of diet control alone. I home test my cat's blood glucose levels regularly and was amazed and pleased to watch his numbers drop to normal levels after altering his diet. As of today (Oct 8) I am editing this review to add that he is officially declared in remission. I no longer have to give him shots, his BG numbers are good, healthy appetite, drinking, peeing, and he's more active and playful. His coat is even softer and smoother. I will continue to monitor his condition and do everything to help him stay in remission (diet control, watch his weight, quickly treat any infections, no oral meds with sugar and no steroids unless it's life or death.) I am a nurse and should have recognized the symptoms of UTI/stones and failed. I had my cat treated at my usual vet and then came home to read your info. I have switched him to wet food (Nature's Variety Instinct) twice a day, exclusively. I also make my own chicken stock and give him 2 cubes with each feeding (warmed to mouse body temp, of course). It took a few weeks and finally, I was successful. I am now working on transitioning him to raw (Instinct) and am having massive success with help from Fortiflora. My vet is very impressed with his labs and his success. While she did not suggest exclusive wet feedings, I hope that my cat's progress will translate into better teaching. We recently took in a stray who is FIV positive. Having three other cats, we needed to do a lot of research so we knew what we were in for and how this could affect our FIV negative cats. This googling led me to Dr. Pierson's catinfo.org. I'm so glad I found her blog, it's been nothing but insanely helpful. After one of our cats was diagnosed with IBS, we switched all of their food to natural, organic, GMO free, fish free, sourced in the US food. (should have done that from the start) This helped, nothing amazing. Our other cat was then diagnosed with IBD and chronic anal gland infections. That's fun- poor cat. We were heading in the right direction, three meals of canned food a day and dry food left out for free eating. Yeah, don't do that. After reading Dr. Pierson's information on dry food vs canned food, we stopped feeding the cats dry food. They didn't even notice. It's been two months since the change and all of our cats are doing amazing. The IBS and IBD cats haven't had any problems at all, nothing. Our IBS cat vomited all the time, up to three times a day. He strained to poop and announced it to the world. The IBD cat used to leave schmears and dollops all over the floor and was very overweight. Our FIV cat was constantly dehydrated and he suffers from anemia. The fourth cat is overweight but thankfully doesn't have any other health issues at the moment so changing her diet was imperative to stave off future problems. The information I found on Dr. Pierson's page has literally saved our cats. No more nasty poops, no more vomiting - seriously, it's been months. Our FIV cat is hydrated and healthy. Everyone eats on a normal schedule similar to cats in the wild. I can't get over the change in all of them. The overweight ones have lost extra ounces, more to come. My 15 yr old cat was diagnosed with diabetes on Dec. 2, 2015. His glucose was 550 and fructosamine was 750 (this was based on blood work taken on Nov. 27th.) He had eaten dry food (no wet; he refused) all his life. The day he was diagnosed I scoured the internet and found Dr. Pierson's incredible website: http://www.catinfo.org . The info there was literally a life-saver. After 4 days on a low carb all wet diet (desperate times called for desperate measures and luckily my cat adapted and ate it) his glucose (at the vet) was 390 and fructosamine had dropped to 440. Three weeks later, on the same high quality low carb diet, his fructosamine was 380. As of 3 weeks ago, his urine no longer has a fruity-ish smell. And he's jumping and playing. I still test him relatively regularly and his glucose has been normal. He has never had to have an insulin shot as a result. I try to really monitor his food and give him 4 regulated servings a day. A vet in my area has a wonderful website: www.catinfo.org, containing much useful & interesting info on feline diseases, nutrition (a must-read!), giving pills, litterbox issues and more. The text is illustrated with pix of local cats and their related stories. This site totally blew me away with the realization of how little I knew about basic cat needs. (I have always been a dog person.) For example, Dr. Pierson says that cats should not eat dry food. Mine doesn't, but I know of many who do because their owners think it's healthier. I've had several consultations with Dr. Pierson for my three cats and they have been eating her diet as recommended for two years. The only problem is they are always constipated and I had the "sense" they are not getting what they need. Raw diets produce less poops but once a week is not healthy. I bought the book "The Natural Cat" by Anitra Frazier (amazon - where else :)) and checked out her diet recommendations which were different than Dr. Pierson's. Her diet was a bit difficult to understand if you make a lot of food at one time, so as luck would have it I found her website online, and she was available for consultations at half the price of Dr. Pierson. My cats have been on the new diet for 2 months and the change is remarkable. They are pooping regularly, their coats are shiny and thick, and I no longer have the "sense" they are not getting what they need. read more

Within 24 hours of following her recommendations regarding high protein, low carb food (with list of protein, fat and carbs in popular brands) my 9 year old overweight male cat's health dramatically improved - its been over a week and he is doing well and his energy level has increased. I have 2 cats and often foster for Cats In Need rescue in Orange County. Dr. Pierson's catinfo.org website, especially the raw food recipe, has helped maintain my cats' health since kittenhood and the countless cats I've fostered. After 6 months on raw food, a foster cat with severe stomatitis (even after complete teeth removal) no longer needs medication (steroids/opioids) to lower his inflammation. We suspected it's mostly due to grain/legume/gluten/thickener/fish allergies in dry & canned foods and have tested this theory through process of elimination. Switched my cats to a raw food diet and they've never shown more contentment and happiness. My 13 year old Himalayan had been on a prescription diet food almost all his life because of a bout with feline cystitis when he was a year old. After reading Lisa's advice and reading the label of that costly food I was appalled. I switched both cats to a grain free wet food only diet. I have since switched again to a raw chicken diet. Hello, My name is Michael Ray, a feline only veterinarian in Roswell GA. I have practiced for 20 years, and 15 of those years have been feline-only. This information is not anywhere near complete, primarily because crucial principles of feline behavior and nutrition are not being considered. I am not surprised to hear that Dr. Pierson does not practice in clinical medicine. It shows! Cats are supposed to feed 15-20 times daily. That is normal, not possible. That is also what their gut and physiology expects. No mention of minimal volume daily intake is found on this website, nor is there any mention of normal meal frequency for this species. Cats are also creatures of habit and these diet changes are not always well tolerated. Often, they are very poorly tolerated. There is no section of this website that allows the cat owner to recognize that this change is not working. If Dr. Pierson thinks all cats adjust well to this, then she is clearly not well informed. I recall working at another feline-only hospital in Pasadena California when the whole canned food craze first hit veterinary medicine (Approx 2001, 2002). Dr. Deb Greco had shown how much better canned food is for diabetics, when compared to dry. Great theory but noone else seemed to get similar data and she has since backed off of her canned only recommendations.... Smart Dr! I also recall something I wrote while working at that cat clinic in Pasadena. I recommended 2-3 meals a day, and make them, "go hungry if they didn't like it". I was very wrong. Fortunately, I learned. Unfortunately, it took learning from patients that struggled. Some struggling to the point of "fatty liver", which occurs when a cat does not eat well for an extended time frame. Almost 15 years later, I find that if cats were fed free choice dry food as babies (especially if they were also fed no canned food), the odds of them going to canned only is about 10%. Most cats need their kibble brought back. Speaking of the "au natural" background of this species, which Dr. Pierson seems to be so fond of reciting, many importamt points are omitted. Reptiles and insects are very well represented in the natural diet of Felis silvestris lybica, and they are also well represented in barn cat diets. In spite of not having free choice dry food, these cats eat 15-20 times a day. So, 3 meals a day is very uninformed advice. I encourage all cat owners to approach this change very cautiously. Our pet cats are small prey predators, not lions and tigers. I currently tell owners that if I could wave a majic wand and make it work, I would feed cats canned only. I agree with the theory. But this website is careless and moderately informed if I am trying to be nice. I used to live in California. It is a great place, but these trends followed by poor information, can take off a little easier. But the canned only thing is always suspect and problems will arise in a large percentage of patients. I think Dr. Pierson would feel the same if she had real patients instead of a good theory. read more

Pierson, if at all possible i need help retrieving this cat before i pull out. long story short, in my rv sold my house moving out of Arizona, i trapped the female buddy of this guy but can't seem to trap him. don't want to leave him in this hot hell hole, rescued 12 prev cats from around my home last few years, he won't enter into the 2 separate traps i have , constantly put fresh food/water each every night for him (2 months ongoing), i would pay for a tranquilizer if it can be arranged i need to move buy a house and be settled... and believe me i would have been on the road already but i wont leave him behind ! from scott six o 2 918 8100 ps i need to rescue him before the coyotes do it for me :( read more
