I've lived in Lisa's neighborhood for 14 years. Very convenient Hair Salon location. Also, Lisa is very kind, friendly and her prices are super reasonable. Despite my curly hair type, she always finds a way to accommodate me and my hair style goals that day. Even if I would go to other hair salon and it doesn't work out, Lisa's hands are perfect to fix things, she gives advice and future suggestions. She also took good care of my brother's hair cuts, until he moved far, my daughter almost every year and my mom during each visit. We miss you so much Lisa and hope to be in touch soon. read more

Overpriced for her skills. My hair was originally layered, I asked to cut it shorter and KEEP THE LAYER. I even pointed out the exact length I wanted on my hair, she cuts it WAY shorter than what I asked. I wanted at chest length but she cut it to shoulder length. There were also no layers at all, and the the hair was not even straight from the back. I had to go back home to ask a friend to trim it even for me. I meant to write this review earlier, but I got a perm a little bit ago. I have been wanting a nice short perm for my hair, but was scared since I have dyed it and I have extremely thick hair that is quite unruly. For context I am 19 and male The first perm I got from Lisa seemed to come out great...but then I waited a few days and when I washed it out the curls came undone, almost like I never got a perm. I was convinced that this had to do with my hair, because the same thing happened a few years ago at a different salon. So I called Lisa up and...to my surprise she offered a WHOLE NEW PERM again! I was shocked, she said come on down and I got my perm. It now is the most beautiful curls ever and has given me newfound confidence that I absolutely LOVE! Love this salon!! If you want to ruin your hair and be the ugliest you of the whole history for several months, you should come here and have a perfect nightmare. The female staff is a total amateur. You can cut your own hair with a pair of whatever scissors without looking into the mirror while you're doing it and it'll absolutely end up way better than what she does to you. She just ignores whatever you think and whatever you say and insists making a mess extremely quickly. Definitely never come again. read more

Pretty good place to get a hair cut, especially if you speak Chinese. There's a pretty sweet couch to sit on while you're waiting and plenty of magazines to read. They can speak English, so you don't have to be Asian to go here. I even saw a Black guy getting his haircut here. read more

Over 10 years later, we're still going to Lisa for haircuts and trims. She does a great job for a great price. This isn't a fancy salon, I don't come here for a style or color, and I don't expect my butt to be kissed when I sit in the waiting area. Lisa is good so she is BUSY, especially on the weekends. She has a life and so does her staff, so don't expect to get great service when you come in 2 minutes before the shop closes. That's just rude anyway, how do you like it some a-hole customer comes to your work 2 mins before close? I've gone here twice, and the first time was great. The hairdresser asked if I wanted my hair washed first, she was friendly and tried to keep some small level of conversation. She didn't take long, but she was careful. I went again recently, and my experience was completely different. The hairdresser (and I use this term with hesitation) said about two sentences. I wouldn't call this place "clean," either, when I watched as the guy before me got up and left, and as the hairdresser had me sit down, I watched in the mirror as she wiped the comb she had just used on the last guy with her hand and begin using the same comb on me. Yuck. I looked around, and I didn't notice it before, but there was no barber's anti-septic green stuff that cleans the haircut instruments. All her scissors and combs lay on a towel that looked as if a cat had shed all over it, there were so many different people's hair on it. Good thing I had time to go home and shower right after. After all, she spent only five minutes cutting (no exaggeration). I'm a guy, so I don't need an hour-long cut, but five minutes? When I got home, I noticed there were several missed spots over one ear. Yes, it's better than Super Cuts, but not by much. read more

I've been going to Lisa for over 10 years. Extremely affordable and very consistent. She remembers exactly how I like my hair done and I don't ever have to worry about the stress I used to have when someone would mess things up. I even moved to NYC and I still come back to get my haircut with her because she's the best and most reliable. I don't understand the lack of stars and high marks on here but to each their own experience. It is very strange though that most of the 1 and 2 stars are featured on the front page while there are a BOATLOAD of 4 and 5 stars -- that are on average from more recent reviews -- featured only in the small filter link on the bottom left. Really uncomfortable experience. When I walked in this salon, I said hello and I need haircut. However, the owner said nothing to me and just sat there played her phone. I sat there for a while and then I have to ask her could I get haircut here. She said the stylist will come tomorrow. About twice a year, I get about 4 inches lopped off in the exact same cut I've had for forever. (I'm not exactly adventurous with my hair.) I've been going to Lisa's since college because Lisa does a great job for an affordable price - $20 for a women's hair cut & blow dry. Lisa herself is awesome and does a great job. She remembers how I want my hair cut even though I'm not in there very frequently. I can usually get in and out in under 30 minutes because there is rarely a wait on weekdays and no need for an appointment. I don't know that I would go there for anything more adventurous than a basic trim though. On my most recent visit though, a new guy cut my hair - I don't even know his name because he said about 3 words to me. I was not as pleased as I usually am with Lisa's work. I ended up having to trim some myself as the front sections on either side of my face weren't quite the same length, which I didn't notice until I got home because of how he'd curled the ends under during the blow dry. I went from black to blonde for the first time and I had a fantastic experience at Lisa's salon. I have naturally dark brown/black hair, and Lisa helped me achieve a beautiful platinum blonde in less than an afternoon! She has over 30 years of experience and it shows. She does her work meticulously and strives to provide her best work for every customer. Her workshop is extremely clean and comfortable. Her hands were working hard for 3 hours straight while I relaxed on my phone and reading magazines the entire time . Although English is not her first language, it will not be an issue if you are patient. In addition to her excellent craftsmanship the prices are extremely affordable. Be patient and communicative and she will astound you with the results. I will definitely be coming here in the future and recommending her to my friends! read more

$160 for hair dye and really bad haircut. I asked for black hair and it comes out to be black with purple/red shade under light. She didn't even warn me about it and she just started working on it. And after the hair dye, she scratches your scalp w her nails and overall doesn't wash properly. I came home and scalp still had dye and remaining shampoo. Regarding haircut, unequal lengths and possibly the worst layered cuts. She also cut two inches more than I originally requested for. I explained to her that this is not the layers and even showed a picture but she just grabs pieces of my hair and keeps chopping with the small knife thing instead of scissors and my hair just keeps getting shorter with really weird chops(?). My hair was long and now it comes a little longer than my shoulder. She also asks really personal questions- if my parents bought a house, what they do, where they live, if I have siblings, what my siblings do, what I do, what I studied, where I live, where I work. read more

I don't need to say much about this place-- I went here for 4 years while going to school in Boston and would make trips up here in the summers just to get my haircut here. Price is pretty decent, from what I remember, around $17 -18 for a men's cut. They know how to cut Asian hair, which I have heard from many barbers is not an easy thing to do. I usually go to get my hair cut at a large nearby chain on Comm Ave. that starts with "S" and ends with "uts." I've been increasingly irritated at their lack of quality and some of the hairdressers' insistence on cutting MY hair THEIR way. So I stopped into Lisa's on a whim and what I got was a 10 minute, simple, nice, clean guy's haircut. Just like I wanted it. I tipped double because the experience was everything I want in a haircut -- fast, easy, and cheap. I'm a simple guy to please when it comes to my dome, and Lisa's did the trick. read more

I just got my hair cut here. I was trying to find Crystal Hair Salon but ended up here instead. Big mistake. I paid $16 for a cut. The bangs turned out okay, but when I looked at the back of my head in the mirror when I got home, it was crooked. Lisa's is a good value- you can get a women's cut for around 15 or 20 bucks depending on if you get a wash too. I have been here for trims and will likely continue to go here for trims, but if you are thinking about a serious style change (layers, coloring etc) I'm not sure I'd trust it. Also, one of my guy friends went here and the cut they did NOT work with the shape of his head...it was kind of awkward. So I'd say this place is good for what it is- fast, you can usually go in without an appointment, but if you are a girl who really cares about your hair I'd be a little careful. read more

Do your part and stay away from corporate chains. Lisa's has the nicest people, are super accommodating, fast and reasonable. This is the type of neighborhood salons that makes a community. It isn't the most trendy or glamorous salon, but if you don't need the latest styles, you don't need to pay the Newbury St prices either. I have been here 2 times in the past year. The first time I asked the guy to cut my hair slightly shorter I went from a long bob to a short bob. Because the hairstyle turned out ok and I have had short bob before I didn't say much. Their prices aren't bad for cuts so my fiance continued to come to this place routinely. He always had good experience here. He always had Lisa. This time I came to get my hair coloured and my hair lightly trimmed. On the phone, Lisa quoted me $60. Then when I got to the store and picked out the color she said to get it that light we need to color twice so we need to add $20 so $80 in total. I was okay with it and we continued. I got my hair coloured the first round. Then I sat with a hair cap to wait for the colour to turn. The two people that were working there were watching some show on the computer, chatting, playing two different music at the same time. To summarize, paying very little attention to me. After sitting and waiting for 10 minutes without being checked on, the guy came by and checked on my hair and commented on how hard my hair colour is turning. So he put me under this heated machine to speed up the process. I was there for another 10-20 minutes. The machine went off for at least 5 minutes but no one checked on me. I ended up calling out to him to let him know. He came and checked on my hair and said lets go wash your hair and put some more color on it as it seemed like my hair is not catching on the new color as fast and as well as we hoped for at that point. This was expected as the owner told me they will have to put color twice in order to get the color I wanted. After washing my hair and in the process of blow drying my hair, I can tell they were discussing my hair in another language (even though I dont speak the exact dialect of Chinese, I can pick out words that they were saying). After talking to each other, they started to tell me how this one step colouring gave me enough color and I look really good. But the problem is that it is much much darker than the colour I showed him. It is not even the same shade. We picked out a more golden blonde yellow, I ended up with a charcoal brunette. They then started saying how if I go for that too light of a color I won't look as natural (I showed him a picture of myself with lighter hair in the past so I know how I look with that shade we picked out initially). So without giving me the second step coloring he said he is done. At that point I was already quite disappointed with my experience there. I asked him since I only did a one step hair coloring would it be the $60 I was quoted. He then said no it would still be $80 as I had my whole hair colored as oppose to highlight. I NEVER asked for a highlight only. I asked to get my whole head colored to a shade we both picked out. If you think you can't dye it to that color because my hair is too dark then you should have told me at the start. Not color halfway and stop and say I look good with this darker shade just because you don't want to do another step of colouring. Needless to say I was very disappointed. After finishing I turned to my fiance and he said the colour is the same as before. I know guys usually can't tell much difference when it comes to girls hair, but he is quite correct here because even I can't tell too much difference. I just feel like they never put any time, effort, or thought into their work. For them it is just another person that came through the door. For me, I am getting my hair coloured to prep for our engagement session in two weeks. I think they can care less. If you want a quick and relatively cheap haircut this place isn't too bad. If you want someone who will take their time and who take pride in their work, this is not the place! read more

I've been a regular customer at Lisa's for almost 10 years. I go for a color treatment, highlights, and an eyebrow waxing. I like going to Lisa's for these services because she and the other stylist do a consistently good job. Color and highlights can easily end in disaster, and when the color you're asking for is red (the color I get), the end result might not even be close to what you imagined. I don't have to worry about that at Lisa's. They get it right every time. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to end up with a really good haircut, more like what you would expect on Newbury Street, for under $20. I continued to go to Lisa's when I moved to Somerville. Lisa does a good job because of her attention to detail, and because she actually listens. One tip, try to get a cut from Lisa herself.
