I've been here three times now to get straight perms and a digital perm done by Juju and I don't think I will go anywhere else now. Juju is an absolute gem and really knows what she's doing when it comes to hair. She also speaks English pretty well so it is easier to communicate with her if you don't speak Chinese. Perms can take up to a couple hours so she also makes sure you keep up your stamina by offering you snacks and water/coffee. Somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me. A huge pro is the price and convenience. My haircut was only $40 and Mobo, my stylist, was super efficient in cutting all my straggly ends, blow drying it, and straightening it, and the cut looks good even after a wash at home (the true test of a haircut is how it looks after that first wash!). My Mandarin is passable enough in conveying what I wanted for a haircut and Mobo did exactly what I asked: take off the bottom inches, a few framing layers around the face, nothing too adventurous. Hair is hair and will grow out but no one wants a stylist going rogue. That said, a few things to bear in mind: 1. Le's is extremely low-frills, to the point of having lots of hair unswept on the ground. I don't consider myself super snobby and often have better, more bang-for-your buck experiences at the lower-end places than the $$$$ salons. However, I couldn't get over the piles and piles of hair just laying there underfoot. 2. I had just enough cash on me to pay for the haircut and tip both Mobo and the hair washer but I would have preferred to pay with card. When I asked at first if I could use a card, Mobo said only cash; then, when my husband decided to get a haircut too after I was finished and fished out his credit card, Mobo didn't say anything, even though, not two minutes earlier, he was insisting on cash. Sigh. 3. My hair wash was brisk yet thorough, no complaints. What I didn't like was she didn't bother to fully tie up the towel when she was done and dropped me off at the chair, so that my sopping hair just kind of ... laid there with a towel carelessly placed on top of it. Overall, my baseline for a good haircut is extremely low and my hair grows super slowly so I only get one cut every year, so this did the job. read more

I asked for a new hair color and was given the same color that I had previously. No noticeable differences in my hair except for roots. Spent $180. They offered to fix it and then told me AFTER they added a second layer of color that it couldn't be done. Hair stylist convinced me that after a few weeks, the color would wash out to the shade that I wanted and after 6 weeks it was the same. Also left my hair incredibly dry and way more damaged than before. The service offered the results of a root touch up for over double the price- it is usually only $80 for a root touch up. My boo and I each made an appointment for a haircut with Candy. My boo's hair is super coarse and a bit tough to manage - Candy smoothed out her hair so it had a nice soft shape to it. I had let my hair go and Candy was very attentive to cleaning up my mess when she gave me a slightly graduated bob. In both cases, Candy was super gentle. We both are very satisfied and so happy we came in. I get it ppl have bad days but you don't have to take it on strangers. Then there is the hair stylist he just didn't listen to how I wanted my hair to be done and I just don't like the end result. I have been going to Le's for haircuts for years and it feels like the quality has decreased. One exception I will say is the hairdresser Candy, who has an amazing personality and above-average skills. For the most recent haircut I went for, my hair looked unhealthy and frisky afterward. The texture of the cut is rugged, and the things I asked for (fixing the bangs, trimming the bottom) did not get accomplished. Rather, my hair got thinned too much, and the attempt to style was atrocious, so now it looks unhealthy from being too thin as well as messy from the uneven edges everywhere. Le's is ok to go if you just want something simple like getting your hair length reduced. But if you're looking for styling to improve your appearance, I would say Le's doesn't cut it anymore. read more

I had a phenomenal experience here yesterday, which compelled me to write this review. This is my second visit to Le's Salon (my first was 2 years ago, my hairdresser then was JuJu and she was also fantastic!) and I scheduled an appointment with Candy for a haircut & styling session. Firstly, I arrived 30mins late to my appointment due to traffic, but because it was towards the end of salon hours with less clients, I was still seated promptly. Secondly, I am so glad that I had made an appointment with Candy for my haircut. The moment I sat down, Candy was friendly and helpful. I gave her some reference pictures on how I wanted my hair cut, but I also inquired with her about her opinion on what would suit me best. After a few minutes of discussion, Candy got started on the haircut and the result was phenomenal. She was very respectful of my wishes (I've had experience with some hairstylists would choose to cut hair the way they want, instead of listening to my needs) and she was talking to me throughout the process. My hair came out a bit different from the reference photo, but it was fantastic nonetheless. This was one of the rare instances when I would come out of a salon and actually be ecstatic about the results! My boyfriend also got his hair cut here (by a male hairdresser - I didn't get his name unfortunately) and came out looking amazing as well! The price was very affordable, especially considering the quality! My boyfriend's haircut and mine came out only to a total of $65. My hair was quite long (lower-back length) and my boyfriend's hair was below shoulder length, and yet the price for both our cuts came out to be approximately the cost of 1 haircut at other places. All in all, I couldn't be happier with the experience I had here! I'm not from Boston and I usually get my haircut in my home country when I visit every summer, but I might have to rethink that after this! read more

Got a long layered cut with Juju and am very happy with the outcome. She was very precise and took care in trimming and snipping even the smallest amounts of hair to make everything even. You can tell she cares about her craft! She even curled my hair with a straightening iron and the curls lasted 3 days. I've yet to get my hair to hold any curl for more than a couple of hours on my own. Cash only - my haircut was $35 before tip which is a steal for a haircut from the salon owner. Why not 5 stars? The salon was backed up with customers in different stages of their haircut. I was left with wet hair slumped all over my head and face while Juju finished blow drying and cutting the hair on the girl next to me who had been there for a few hours already. Reviewing 6 months after getting Japanese Straightening perm: Minh did my Perm and I was not disappointed! He was very gentle and very attentive. He made sure I was hydrated as this took like 5 hours. I naturally have curly fizzy hair and was really worried that it won't work since I had keratin treatment in the past and it didn't completely straightened my hair but Minh did such a good job that even 6 months later it's still look soooo good (pics attached. If I could I would NOT rate this horrible place. But I had to prevent you guys not to come here unless you're familiar with the Chinese style of hair cut. I came in, Knowing that they might not understand what I'm trying to say so I showed them a picture and a drawing of the hair that I want. LE, the stylist said "yeah yeah yeah, I know I know, easy" so I assumed he was telling the truth. I told him, no bangs, don't cut my hair past my chin, no layers too high, just make a v shape in the back since my hair is long enough for that. Guess what I got? A fucking bang, layers every where yet ... not a v shape in the back whatsoever. I told him and he said "your hair is too short for that" !!! Well why didn't you tell me in the beginning that you couldn't do what the customer told you? The greed of getting $35 just so you can make somebody so unhappy and leave your place regretting that they have to pay you money to ruin their hair. Advice, if you don't think that you can do something make sure you tell the customer first before you go ahead and cut their hair however you want no matter how long you have been cutting hair. In the end, I was so upset but he kept saying it's pretty it's pretty ... If course, you cut it and you have to say it, there's nothing to fix. I had a super perplexing experience, I don't quite know how to summarize it so I'll explain the whole thing if you want to read it. I went in around 6pm on a Thursday and asked if I could get my bangs trimmed and a hair wash. The lady at the front was like "so a haircut and a wash?" I was like, "no, just a simple trim of my bangs." She then started discussing in Cantonese with the stylist beside her, and replied back, "a wash is $30 and a haircut + wash is $35 so you might as well get a haircut." First of all, that difference in pricing is sly, but I was really not feeling my look lately, so I thought why not. She then asked, "do you prefer anyone?" Since I had only popped in once for a $10 bangs trim before, I had no idea who to ask for and just said whoever. The wash was okay, the woman didn't use any force at all but at least I felt clean. When she led me to the back section (I didn't know they had more stylists in the back), she brought me to this guy, Sam. I panicked, because the few hairdressers I had in my life were all female and I had never had my hair cut by a guy, let alone a gruff-looking middle-aged Cantonese guy. I respect male hairdressers a lot! but I've just never had my hair done by one. I asked if I could get a different stylist bc I just never had a male one before, and he was really nice about it and went to ask. IMMEDIATELY, all the female employees (SIX of them) were like "I thought you were just getting your bangs cut!" "Didn't you say any stylist was okay??" "I've never heard of anyone not having a guy cut their hair before!" "He's better at cutting hair than I am!" (Frankly, I find that worrying.) Do you know that experience of being talked loudly at by a horde of Chinese women at once? While all the other customers are still there? I knew no one in that room! Anyways, the wait would've been an hour, and though the guy was trying to reassure me another stylist could help me, I didn't want to bother any of them and thought I'd give him a chance. The haircut he gave me was fine. It wasn't anywhere near the best I've had back in San Diego or Taiwan, but it served its purpose: I needed to freshen up my look. He was nice and decent at his craft, just not the most detailed-oriented. Tldr; the haircut + wash was fine but that was a weird experience. So the 5-star review was based on JuJu fixing an incredibly horrible cut...so I went back to her a few more times as my hair grew back. Now, it's finally back to its long length and I wanted to go to juju for a normal layered cut. Unfortunately, it's not as precise as I'd prefer and a bit choppy. There didn't seem to be a method except her dry cutting and cutting vertically. I feel like the horizontal cutting is more effective. I have gotten nice haircuts here from Ling, Candy, and Juju, who all speak great English. I'm very open to experimentation when it comes to haircuts, so the stylist can end up having a lot of influence. Ling was quick (maybe even brusque) in manner and action, highly skilled, and no BS (the least talkative, which I like!). I wasn't totally sure how I felt about the cut while in the chair, but *everybody* -- partner, friends, co-workers -- ended up fawning over it in the days and weeks afterwards. Candy was the most affable and conversational, despite being clearly overworked that day (they don't get a lot of breaks there, so don't forget to tip!). She delivered and styled a haircut that looked fabulous to me in the moment, especially given the time constraints, but that did not actually hold up very well over time as it was growing out (as in, it was a bit choppy, and it required consistent styling to look as good as the day I walked out). Juju was extremely finessed in her approach, took a lot of time, and consulted me at various choice points during the cut. She felt very maternal to me, somehow, which coupled with her skill level, made me feel as if I was in good hands. Even if you've got an appointment with her, stay flexible with time, as she does not rush. I see that most of these reviews are written by women, but when I was there last, tons of men were getting really fabulous-looking haircuts. Since the Yen's hair salon staff moved to Le's I was looking for Eddie but I guess they misheard and thought I meant Andy. Needless to say my sister and I were surprised but pleasantly so because Andy did a wonderful job with both our hair. He really listened to our requests and has a lovely personality. He speaks Cantonese and Mandarin but limited English. I don't see a lot of reviews for Andy but he's great! Give the man more love. The young man washing our hair seemed like he was having a bad day though . Was very brusque and a little grumpy. I don't hold it against him, times are tough. (Meanwhile Andy was a joy to be around and very friendly and positive even though he admitted business has been sparse lately.) Everyone was wearing masks with plastic dividers between salon chairs. Ask for Candy! She is awesome. I already read many positive reviews about Candy on Yelp before I went, so I was set on booking her. She helped me with the Japanese straightening treatment. The cost is $280 + $40 tips: total $320. Because I had dyed my hair and it was damaged, Candy took care to SLOWLY process my hair, applying the chemical in increments and saving the ends of my hair for the last. The process took 5.5 hours! It normally would be 3-4 hours, but because my hair was damaged, Candy was very careful and took longer with the process. It was so nice for her to do that, because I would have paid $320 regardless of the length of the treatment. She could have rushed through, but instead she stayed with me until 10:30 PM! Candy is great, make sure to ask for her (if you don't specifically ask for her, a random person will be assigned to you). Also I wish I knew this before, but apparently you can assign the tip amounts to different people. I paid $40 in tips, and Candy would only get half. The other half goes to the person washing your hair. I wish I had said $35 to Candy and $5 to the other person. read more

First and LAST time I come here. I ended up with the worst haircut I've ever gotten in a decade. I asked Michael to leave my hair long and just trim the damaged ends. Simple enough request I thought. What I ended up with instead is a choppy, uneven MESS of a lob, 4 inches shorter than I requested. Why? Juju is very precise and kind so make sure you explain to her exactly how you want her hair and she will get it done. Regardless of who cuts my hair, I always explain the length I want my hair more conservatively in case they cut off extra, but Juju was pretty good about it. My experience was overall great and I would name this my go-to haircut salon in Boston. My haircut was $30 pre-tip. Unfortunately, they no longer take student IDs and prefer cash (you need this to tip anyway). The salon is also not the most modern as the chairs you sit in for a haircut are not that comfortable and the stylists do not have little chairs that they roll around on - they stand and bend the whole time.
