Overall, it was a lovely hotel in a very ideal central location, but didn't have many amenities to enjoy on-site (ie: a hotel bar, restaurant or rooftop space). The room itself was HUGE and beautifully decorated, with a view of the river and old town - more like an apartment than a hotel, in a good way. They claim that all of their rooms come with a view, because of the hotel's location on top of a hill in the old neighborhood of Alfama. Service was okay, a little spotty with different people working the front desk at different times, like most boutique hotels. They didn't give us a big welcome schpeel when we arrived, so we had to inquire about things like the free breakfast, wifi, and on-site happenings. Getting a quick tour or rundown of what was offered would have been nice. The hotel is definitely beautiful, but we felt we were paying more for the hipster decor than anything else.

Room was quite small but understandable given the location. I would like to give a shout out to the staff here for the excellent service. They were nothing but welcoming during my stay here. Mailed my postcard for me, booked airport shuttle (they provide this service for 25 euro), and giving me restaurant suggestions and tour guides. I couldn't have asked more out of them. The breakfast here was quite simple, the regular continental stuff (eggs, bacon, mushroom, bread, coffee) plus some pastries (Portuguese custard). I would dine out (check out my review for a brunch place literally a few steps away).

Therefore, my wife booked our stay at an establishment called Hotel Lis. After a three hour train ride from Lagos, we were ready to kick our feet up and enjoy some R&R time in our room. When we entered the lobby, we received a lukewarm greeting from the employee at the front desk. After discovering that Yelp is international, I "checked in" on the app and saw that there was a 10% off of your stay offer. I proceeded to show this to the employee, he responded by saying that he was unaware that the business was on Yelp and that I would have to bring it up to the manager at check out. This was disappointing to me because I have never encountered an employee not being aware of a coupon that is available on a legitimate app. After receiving our key cards, we headed up to our room. The room was very clean and for the most part, had everything that we needed. Two things that stood out, was the lack of a coffee machine (I believe there was instant coffee-which is less than great) and the lack of a Smart TV (it's 2023-every hotel should have a TV that allows for you to log into your favorite streaming services). Also, the lighting provided in the rooms is not sufficient to the size; therefore, there was dark spots in our room (even with all of the lighting on). Every morning (from 7:30 to 10:30) the neighboring Taberna do Lis restaurant provides a free breakfast to Hotel Lis guest complete with coffee and champagne. The staff at Taberna do Lis are really friendly and constantly refresh breakfast items as they run out. Overall, we made the best of our stay here. We love the location of the hotel, the ability to peek out your open windows and see + hear the everyday city life, and the close proximity to restaurants and shopping venues. If you're looking for outgoing staff that go above and beyond, this is not the place for you. I honestly cannot say that we would be willing to stay here again; however, if push came to shove, we could make it work.

A Slice Of Heaven…read more.... The hotel is the Alfama district on a side of the tallest hill in Lisbon. It's been open for 11 years after 12 years of renovations on a 15th century mansion. Pros: - From your first step into the lobby, you'll notice top-of-the line finishes yet feel a casual elegance. - Service from people at the front desk reflects those same qualities. Everyone and everything is at your beck and call. Our room rate included breakfast, but since we had to leave early for the airport, they volunteered to pack it in a box for us. - For our 3 night stay after a cruise, we booked the Santiago Suite on the highest (4th) floor. Light filled the main room through floor to ceiling windows with a 270 degree view of the harbor. Reserve it if you can. - Furnishings in our room were top of the line. The bed was made for sleeping. Towels were super soft and absorbent. Even the toilet paper seemed to be 3 ply. - Location is excellent. Just 5 blocks uphill from downtown and 5 blocks downhill from a park overlooking the city. - Their restaurant, Audrey's: - Breakfast: The a la carte menu offered some of the best breakfast foods we've ever had. Examples: Fresh granola and berries with Greek yogurt. THE BEST EVER! Home baked breads and pastries. Orange juice that's pure and not too sweet. Bagel and lox to please the purists. Service was provided by a trio of very friendly, attentive and helpful young women. - Lunch: We ate on the patio in front of the hotel. I had a super tasty vegetarian Thai dish while my wife had a big salad. They were accompanied by the best Sangria in ages. Sweet, but not too much. - Dinner: The dining room is very attractive yet understated like the hotel. Food was impeccable. Tomato salad was large and amazing. My wife had a dish centered around baked cod which was large and filling. My polenta with mushroom ragu was immense and full of flavor. Breads are baked daily and almost as good as dessert. Speaking of dessert, mine was a fantastic chocolate mousse while my wife had fresh berries with a massive amount of the best tasting homemade whipped cream. Cons: - Santiago de Alfama is 1/2 block from a busy street with lots of revelers so noise can creep up the hill. - While the food at dinner was fantastic, service was perfunctory. Our server, a pleasant young woman, covered the basics...but nothing more. During our 90 minute meal, she NEVER asked "how are you doing?" Can I get you anything?" We ordered a bottle of wine, but NOT ONCE did she offer to refill our glasses. She didn't speak an unrequired word. The man seemingly managing the room barely acknowledged us. The guy clearing dishes was the ONLY ONE to ask if we wanted coffee or tea. The restaurant was nearly empty. Did we not spend enough? Did we do something wrong? What a way to put a damper on a glorious meal. However, as well-behaved Americans, we left a 15% tip. The next day, we spoke with Martim Neves Carneiro from Guest Relations who was very receptive to our information. He said "they are part of a new nighttime crew and will need remedial help". How very true. Despite those wrinkles, Santiago de Alfama is certainly a 5 star experience.

The staff was friendly, accommodating, and really knew how to be hospitable. The room was fantastic! It had a full kitchen, washing machine, an actual king bed (rare in Europe), massive pillows, and everything you could need if you were traveling with a kid. The hotel restaurant is small, so you can have breakfast delivered to your room. You kind of need to go to breakfast your first morning to see what options to have and then you can order online for any future mornings. The croissants were always delivered warm and it a little pouch to keep them that way. They smelled heavenly. They also have some of the best pasteis de nata and in the early morning they're warm! The location was great! You did have to walk up a bit of a hill, but it's Lisbon. My only tip would be to stay at this hotel at the end of your trip or only stay here because they will spoil you.

In the lobby, there's also a Kids Club that offers daycare at all times of the day; the staff there were really good at making the kids comfortable. We were assigned room 002, which was the size of a small apartment, with a bedroom that had a king size bed and bunk beds situated in the family room. I know bunk beds can be nerve wracking with little kids, but the hotel had bumpers installed for safe sleeping. Location wise, you're in the heart of the city with lots of restaurants and shops within close walking distance. It'd be hard not to recommend this hotel, unless you are traveling with no kids or on a business trip.
