We hosted a volunteer get together at Liter House and we were really happy to get wonderful feedback from some of our attendees. As with a lot of social gatherings, people don't RSVP or some say they'll be there and don't show... and at the last minute we had to add a table to our already tight room. They were so accommodating and friendly. We had about 30 people attend and we were all on separate tickets. Not only did Anthony (and his unseen sidekicks), our server, do a remarkable job of getting us our food, he managed the checks perfectly without breaking a sweat. The food was excellent. I specifically ordered the bratwurst, which was perfect, but the German potatoes that came with it were the bomb. Everyone's food looked great. All I have to say is Wow!! Liter House is absolutely fantastic. We dined in and sat at a high top in the bar. Our server was attentive and gave a lot of insight on the food and drink options. I love German food, and the menu at Liter House has a lot of variety. A must order: The Beet Salad. I have never had a salad like this and I am still dreaming about it. Other awesome food: Carrot and Parsnip Salad, Liter Schnitzel (a must) and Curry Fries. This place is a 5 star experience. This place isn't your typical German restaurant with their modern take on tradition German food. As a first time visiter, we went with the bratwurst entree and the pork schnitzel, both of which were amazing. The bratwurst plate had so many dimensions of flavor and the pork schnitzel with mushroom spaetzel combined so many traditional Bavarian items into one dish! This place is bit more refined than some of the other Sahm's places, but it's not snooty hipster bull shit either. The liter sized beers and sauerkraut balls are reason enough to give this place a try. The portion sizes are in line with the European style of food they're going for. Ordered the skate, based on a review from the Indy Star. Deep fried, barely any lemon burre blanc sauce, no vegetable, the smallest spaetzel I've ever seen. For $21. What??? Pork schnitzel also had no vegetables, little if any red sauce, $13 hamburger was tiny on a massive bun, fries were cold and meh. If you like fighting flies to eat fried food, this is your place. I shed tears when Bent Rail closed... BR was my spot and the closing was the wurst (see what I did there?). I came into Liter House skeptical at best... Then I was blown away. I had one of the best burgers of my life tonight! Let's take a moment to let that sink in... Hold on... I'll say it louder for the people in the back... BEST BURGER. The space is great and they've made great use of what was once a wide open venue. The beer is great, I had the German IPA and it was bursting with flavor. I was asked if I wanted it "tall" which I signed up for. It was massive and well worth it. I literally cannot wait to go back and try some of the dishes that take German staples and throw in a twist. I don't understand all the 5-star reviews. I ordered the House Bratwurst. The sausage wasn't bratwurst, and it was really dry. How do you cook a sausage until it's dry? My wife and I returned to Liter House for the second time about two months after it opened. After our first visit (1 week after opening), I'll be honest, the food was pretty terrible. However, I'm happy to report that they have a new chef and a new menu, which has greatly improved things. The beer is also one of the closest things you can get to good German beer this side of München, from their standard pulls to their seasonals. I highly recommend a visit. We went tonight for their opening night. We live about two blocks away, and decided opening night might be easier to get a table than on a weekend. We arrived around 6:15 and were seated immediately. I was surprised how much the interior has changed since the days of Bent Rail. The space feels finished and the bar looks beautiful. We were well attended to by our server, my husband tried their house Pilsner and we shared the pretzel. The pretzel was good, the trio of dipping sauces were all good- though I thought it a bit pricey for one pretzel. We ordered the burger and the pork schnitzel. The burger was part beef and part pork, I thought it would be ground pork but instead it had bits of delicious pulled pork in the patty. The burger was rich but so so good, with bacon and pimento cheese. Their fries are great. The schnitzel was also excellent, with the cheese grits and egg. Really both dishes were very satisfying. We are thrilled to have this new spot in the neighborhood and can't wait to see how the beer garden looks after renovation later in early September. Welcome Liter House! read more

I usually love Sahm's restaurants, but not this one. Definitely better than the Bent Rail. The beer was pretty good. The food was overpriced for what you get. I ordered the Bratwurst thinking, "how can you mess that up?" Well it was cut up in chunks and overdone. The potato dumplings had no flavor. The mustard sauce was okay. The service was so so. I think we overwhelmed him coming in at different times. He wasn't very good describing the beer but he did bring samples. The restaurant is very cool and I like what they have done with it. We are fans of Big Lug, and were excited to try Liter House. If you are looking for German food, this is your place in Indy! They have a family friendly section that was full with lots of kids, but the bar area is large and far enough away that it doesn't feel like a kids restaurant. We started with the soft pretzel with came with mustards and cheese dips. We ordered the pork schnitzel and bratwurst, both were delicious. The portions are large and we had leftovers from both entrees. Lots of great beer choices. The service was great. I've been here twice now and overall enjoyed my food both times. Portions seem really hearty - getting a small or half order of Spaetzle was quite a bit of noodles. They have some traditional German dishes and things like blood sausage if you're feeling adventurous. The food this last visit was all extremely salty. My fingers were swollen within 30 min of eating (but I am salt sensitive) and everyone else in my party commented on the saltiness as well. The carrot & parsnip salad was so salty I could barely taste the veggies. The Dunkel beer -Duke is an easy drinking darker beer that sits light enough to allow for a big meal. The back of the restaurant is now a separate restaurant - Half Liter - which was packed and a little chaotic. It has wide open garage doors and I think a few gnats/flies might have migrated into Liter Haus as a result. I do want to come back and try more food as a lot of things on the menu appeal. I think there's just a few kinks to work out still at this place. I was almost going to give 4 stars- but going to wait until I get to try it again to decide either way. read more

HOLY YUM! Went here a few days ago and wow I am blown away by how delicious EVERY single item we ordered was! If you didn't know the place is German-inspired. For starters we had the pretzel, comes with 3 sauces and loved every one of them. They had smoked wings on special with some sort of mustard sauce. WISH that I took a picture because the explosion of flavor was just as great as how delicious it looked. I had the beet salad and my boyfriend had a variation of the bratwurst (blanking on the name of it but it had tzatziki sauce and baba ganoush in it), which was also soo delicious. It was a big serving and we took some of it home. The beet salad was a perfectly refreshing surprise and had yellow and red beets which somehow made it even better. I had a cocktail (called something like summer lover?) which was so delicious and had the perfect amount of fruity flavor. My boyfriend had a mule with brambleberry infusion flavors and ginger beer (which did not overpower the other flavors in the drink) which was also unique and delicious. We spent around $90 all together but it was SO WORTH IT. Will 100% be back again and cannot wait to try the rest of the menu. I have nothing but great things to say and our server Savannah was excellent. Answered all of our questions and what she didn't know she asked the bartender. She suggested my drink and I am so happy to have had her honest advice. I really love all the Sahm restaurants because of how unique the food choices are. That also means that if you are a person who doesn't like exciting flavors then this is not the place for you, but if you like to be inspired by bold but savory flavors then this is the place for you! While here from out of town I made reservations for a Saturday night. I'm always looking for good German food when I travel, saw the other great posts and gave Liter House a try. I brought a new German friend with me who was very pleased with the menu and the dark beer. We were seated quickly and the staff are friendly. When my friend asked an employee passing by for another appetizer I thought "this won't be communicated" but was I wrong. The busboy went and told our server and when she stopped by a few minutes later she told us the additional appetizer was on it's way. I ordered the Rouladen because I'm gluten free. It was good but I prefer a bit more pickle with the meat. Try the pretzel with your beer. It was fresh and served with 2 different sauces. My German friend was thrilled! It is a bit noisy so if you have hearing problems you might want to go during the week. They do have a private dining area up front for larger parties. It's quite sparse but does the job. Free parking in the back. There is an open bar area outside in the back which serves beer and non-German food which was very vibrant. read more

Came here with the parents when they came into town. The location of this spot is great being right off the Monon and close to some nice spots to walk for dessert. Weight staff were very friendly and it was so fun to order beer by the liter. Lunch here was an enjoyable experience. Food was good but not great. The pretzel appetizer was huge and tasty but the dipping sauces were only decent. Lunch offers a selection of sandwiches that were all tasty but lacked a certain wow-factor. The dinner menu looked really fabulous so it may be worth saving this spot for dinner if you want the full experience. This is a great spot to meet friends. Airy with plentiful parking and awesome wheelchair access. I love the decor: a touch of Bavaria without being cheesy and being able to see where the brew happens is cool. Don't come here expecting traditional Bavarian food: when they say "Bavarian Inspired", put the emphasis on the inspired. Having said that, the pretzel appetizer is a must! Sure, the pretzel isn't a typical Bavarian pretzel, but it's tasty and they serve it with a wonderful mustard, beer fondue and obatzda! Wow! Obatzda was one of the first Bavarian things I ate when I first moved there and I fell in love with it! For years I made it myself but somehow forgot about it. Try it, you will not be disappointed. We enjoyed our main meal. I wish they would serve German bread and not pita bread with the meals. I was excited about having quark again, but was disappointed by the amount. They also have falafel... not very Bavarian, I know, but certainly a good vegetarian option for any menu. My biggest gripe about the menu was the Käse Spätzle mac and cheese... you don't mess with Käse Spätzle. I agree with the comment about the glassware. You would never get a liter of Kölsch in Cologne. But you have to understand that the liter and half-liter glasses is why it's called Liter Haus. They have a great selection of German style beers. The service was great. Our server even asked the chef if he'd sell us some of the mustard (and he did!), which was cool of him. I'll definitely be back.
