First off, don't walk in expecting a big menu. You're getting about five sandwiches, and that's it. Turkey club, spicy turkey club, Cubano, the "Peter Dick," and the short rib sandwich. A couple sides, chips included, and that's the whole operation. Simple menu. Serious execution. I went with the short rib sandwich, and I'll be honest...when it came out, I had a moment. For $16, it looks like the smallest sandwich on the board. You start doing that internal math like, "Did I just spend $20 on lunch and still need a snack after this?" Yeah...no. Every bite was packed! The tender, flavorful braised beef was clearly the star of the show. The cajun crema brought a rich, slightly smoky depth, the pickled jalapeños added just the right amount of tang and balanced heat; not overwhelming, just enhancing...and the cheese tied everything together without competing with the beef. That brioche bun? Soft, toasted, and doing just enough to hold everything together without getting in the way. And the chips...honestly perfect for what they're supposed to do: add texture without distracting from the sandwich. (Next time I might throw them on the sandwich... for research purposes.) Washed it down with a Mexican Coke, because...they had Mexican Coke! ‍ Now let's talk about the vibe. Nirvana playing. Grateful Dead stickers everywhere. Chalkboard menu. It feels like a Gen X dive spot... until you taste the food and realize the guys in the kitchen know exactly what they're doing. That's the magic of this place. I came across this place on instagram but I have been driving by it numerous times and been wanting to try it out. I seen on instagram that today they would be having chicken wings so of course I wanted to place an order. I placed my order online. It said it would be about 25 minutes for my order to be ready. When I arrived to the store the owner had greeted me and I told him I was there for a pickup order and gave him my name. He had offered me a drink which I declined since I was just heading home. Matt is the owner he was nice and explained the menu and what all he does. They offer catering along with just cooking different items he puts on the menu each week. There was very limited seating inside there but you could sit inside the place if you wanted to. When I ate my wings they had just the right amount of seasoning and sauce on it. The wings were very flavorful. I was not disappointed with my order. I did wish they had fries so I could add some to my order but they were currently out. The prices were your typical prices for a small business. If you have never been to this place you should check it out. YUM! Came here on a whim and was pleased with my meal. My husband got the short ribs since they were available today and they were falling off the bone! The sauce was also delicious. A little sweet a little spicy perfect. I got the spicy turkey club. Also very good. Perfect level of spice for someone who loves a good hot sauce. TURF Catering + Kitchen was recommended by a fellow foodie. No idea where the name comes from, but I kinda like it. What I don't like is battling traffic on 82nd street in Castleton. Especially since this gem of a restaurant is rather hard to find -- if you blink, you might miss the building, as it is hidden behind a car shop and an Arby's, with limited signage from the street. The inside is small, less than 10 seats total. If you come during the lunch hour, expect to get your food to-go. Menu is limited and focused on sandwiches. But not just any sandwiches, some of the best in Indianapolis. I went with the Peterdick at the recommendation of the employee at the register. This mammoth of a sandwich comes with butter smoked turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, fresno hot sauce, cheddar, miso mayo on ciabatta. The meat is cut thick like Thanksgiving turkey slices. I don't know how to describe the taste other than it was simply delicious from start to finish. Stopped in last month after a social media recommendation and so glad I did. A bit far from me so had been wanting to try it for a while and finally got my chance. Giving this place 5 stars is as easy as living and breathing. Straight up, INCREDIBLE sandwiches. There is something about this place that makes you feel so rooted and appreciative of what small business restaurants are: just serving good food for good people without any fuss or frills. This place is small inside with limited seating, but when it warms up, there are plenty of picnic benches outside. Now back to these sandwiches: feels like you're being wrapped in the warmest most flavorful blanket ever. Meaning that yes, despite everything on these sandwiches (which is a lot), they actually fulfill the purpose of staying together! Honestly defies physics. I had their blackened chicken melt, but my bf got their peterdick, which I think is what they're best known for. I loved both, but definitely coming back to order the peterdick for myself! This teeny little hidden gem of a place has the best wings (yes, THE BEST) in all of Indy. I asked what the secret was and was only told that they were brined. That day they were prepared with Parmesan and garlic. My mom ordered the shrimp and grits, raved about it and made me send a picture to my dad. I couldn't stop taste testing the grits. They're that good. It's counter service and they'll bring the food to you or they also seem to do a robust carry out business. The staff was super friendly and really seemed to enjoy interacting with customers. My only complaint is that I wish they were open more hours (weekday lunch only so far) but they are busy with catering, so we take what we can get. I was introduced to TURF a few months back by a friend who had recently discovered it. At first, I was skeptical... how could a place that is hidden behind an Arby's and attached to a Meineke be good? After the first bite of my Cubano, I am happy to report that I was proven incredibly wrong and have been back a few times since. Now, I have my gripes... the Cubano isn't an authentic Cubano like the ones you get in Florida. For one, the bread isn't toasted and the taste is close, but not identical. But, the flavors are incredible! If you can look past getting an authentic experience, the sandwich quickly became one of my favorites in the city. While I haven't ventured out and gotten anything different, every single dish I have seen come out of the kitchen looks fantastic and the staff is incredibly nice and appreciative of the business. My son-in-law, Ryan Helms, recommended the Turf. He and our daughter, Christina, ordered four different sandwiches with the home made chips. We split the sandwiches into four pieces so that we could try them all. We had the lentil curry chicken soup as well. It was all delicious! We had more than enough food for five people so there were left overs. Much to my surprise, when I reheated a piece of sandwich the next day, the the roll was so flaky not the usual dried out hard crust that would occur normally on a day old reheated bun. They were open on a random Monday night for dinner. I saw it on Instagram and jumped at the opportunity to try this catering kitchen I've seen on social media. They are typically just open for lunch. This place was INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS! We had the brisket sandwich and burger. Both were yummy but the burger was the showstopper. Probably the best burger I've had in several years! The patties were made of ground brisket and so juicy. Their homemade potato chips are made daily and so light and crispy- just the way I like them. So here I sit, brainstorming an event to cater so that I can introduce my friends and family to Turf. Knowing that TURF is next to a car repair shop, imagine my surprise when I stepped outside of my car and had the wonderful aroma of smoked meat hit my nostrils. Based on this, my hopes were high and I was not disappointed. Inside, the counter to order also functions as the largest table to dine in. The current menu is written on a chalk board along the side of the wall and they have a special board facing the front. Industrial would be the best way to describe the decor, but don't let that dissuade you from eating there. I ordered the Turkey Club and it was a wonderful, delicious, amazing sandwich. It was a completely balanced sandwich. The proportions of each ingredient (turkey, cheese, bacon) were perfect. I would agree with a couple of the other Yelpers that thought the homemade chips were a bit of let down. The chips were a little too oily. Next time, I'll go for one of their sides. Coke products are available to drink Service was great. Catering is their primary venture, although I do hope they make a downtown location or at least expand their hours. Congrats to TURF for totally exceeding my expectations two days in a row. After going once and having the incredible Pete's Sake sandwich (heads up: this sandwich is BIG. I never want half of anything but half of this sandwich still would have filled me up) I dragged my wife there the very next day and we split a half chicken, two sides, and an order of the bread pudding. I have to say, if TURF were just a roadside shack selling that bread pudding with their incredible bourbon sauce (more like a glaze) they would still sell out every day. It's just that good. Also, kudos to the man running the front counter who remembered me from the day before. It's the little things. Some advice to people planning a trip to TURF. First, keep in mind that the seating is very sparse -- you may be better off taking your food to-go (a fine option, they wrap everything up very well). I think they may be more popular than they expected, not a bad problem to have I guess. Second, in my extremely humble opinion, it is worth the $2 upgrade charge to go from the housemade chips to one of the other sides (obvious caveat: if you love chips, get the chips). I can't recommend this place enough. From their delicious lunch sandwiches to the catering, everything has been wonderful. It is a little hole in the wall with no bathrooms but the food can't be beat. It is a great choice for lunch in the Castleton area. Went today for lunch. A friend suggested we get there a little earlier than normal to "beat the crowd". Once we pulled up to the restaurant, I realized why he was concerned...it's TINY. Like, 10-15 chairs tiny. As for the food, I had already come in with a plan. There was a burger on the menu that had my name on it. When I tell you that I had been thinking about how amazing it was going to be all morning, please know that I'm completely serious. Well, to my dismay, we walked in and they were out of it (cue my tears). I hesitantly landed on the half chicken and onion rings. The half chicken was juicy and tender and delicious. Didn't have as much color on it as I would have liked, but the taste was on point. There's a butter sauce that comes up with that's...obviously tasty. It's a butter sauce. You can't go wrong with that. The onion rings stole the show for me. They were awesome. They're served with a sauce that's almost like a BBQ sauce...it's sweet but tangy, and overall delicious. I would dip anything in that sauce. ANYTHING. Friend had the short rib grilled cheese with pimento cheese dip, and he was a huge fan. Another one had the special (pork rib sammy) and chips. You can get an oil change and a delicious smoked meat sandwich all in one shopping center? And I thought I was #blessed before I found TURF, now my life is truly complete. The meat on the sandwich was super succulent and the onions provided the sweetness to cut the richness of the meat. It's meat, cheese, onions and bread. Simple, but not simple at all. When Arby's said, GIVE ME THE MEATS, they were thinking of this sandwich.The pimento cheese was absolutely tremendous. I would get it as an appetizer or as a snack for mid-afternoon. Friends got the half-chicken and the BBQ sammy sandwich. Both looked awesome but since I didn't try them, I can't comment. If the BBQ sammy is on the menu next time, count me in. The space is tight so don't linger. Also, bring your wallet. My meal cost $17, but I'd give TURF $17 EVERY.DAY.OF.THE.WEEK. This place is unbelievably good! Get over to the Castleton Meineke for an oil change and check out Turf now...there is no way they are going to remain a hidden restaurant for much longer. My wife and I had the Turf burger, short rib grilled cheese sandwich, onion rings, and bread pudding. Everything exceeded our expectations for a downtown jacket-and-tie restaurant, except that Turf retains it's casual next-door-to-Meineke friendliness. The most remarkable thing about the burger is not the taste (which is amazing, don't get me wrong), but it has the consistency of world-class nigiri sushi -- the burger patty somehow retained it's shape in the bun, but then just dissolved in my mouth. Some kind of dark arts wizardry going on here. Amazing! My favorite dish was the short rib grilled cheese. It has all of the intense flavor of slowly braised meat + the deep satisfaction of a great grilled cheese sandwich. And all of it brought together into perfect balance between two pieces of bread. The onion rings: hey George's Neighborhood Grill, you're on notice...the guys at Turf have just as many mad skillz at the deep fryer, without having to deal with George's perpetually disorganized hostess. Sitting in this tiny sandwich shop looking at the backside of an Arby's I felt so sorry for the people in the drive-through line. We have the meats ha ha if they turn around they would have some serious meats. At Turf the meats are smoked and the bread baked in house. We had the smoked ham special that came with apple chutney and racelette cheese, very juicy and rich. I was intrigued by the ham and salmon croquette which was not too fishy just deepened the ham flavor. It came with caramelized onion, gruyere cheese, béchamel ( kind of cheating, it makes everything amazing) and a surprise touch of a Parmesan seared crust on the bread. We got to sample the butter smoked turkey which was unbelievably moist and flavorful very smoky. The only bummer that was the housemaid chips that seemed a little dark and possibly over cooked but I shouldn't be eating chips anyway.
