The oldest bar in Smithfield, the Little Brown Jug originally operated as a Pure Oil Station in the 1950's, it was a place where you could get your car serviced and a grab a beer in the back room. This awesome staple of Smithfield has been serving its community in more ways than one for a long time and is very popular with the locals, but you don't have to be a local to feel the love the owners have put into this place. You can't help but relax in this cozy and chill environment! Regardless of whether your sitting outside on the large patio or inside the bar, there is not an uncomfortable chair in the house. As far as I am concerned you wont find a colder beer anywhere, and you certainly won't find a better assortment of beer in any bar within 20 miles. Total Wine or Wegman's doesn't count. This is a great little bar owned by a couple of great owners, Smithfield is lucky to have it. Cheers! read more

I was just in town for the day taking care of some family business. I stopped at the Little Brown Jug. I tell you what I like a good bar and don't hand that honor very often but LBJ deserves that honor. Erika made me feel like a regular and they had the not common beer that is my favorite available. Well what can I say about Little Brown Jug. I don't know how to put in words. Whenever, I go out towards West Smithfield, I have to go by the little place by the river. As a person of color, I get a little uncomfortable going by here. On days when the weather is perfect and the deck full of people chatting with friends. There was one, two or three points I guess it's the alcohol or something, I get a little heckling here there, just get a reaction when I get called out a name that I'm not going to post. So, far no objects had been thrown or someone trying any confrontation. But, I will say that I coming into town and there was a guy and two ladies with him. He was waiting to turn from the highway. As, soon as he pull up in a parking space, somehow the conversation took a turn. He mentioned about going fishing, my first thought was at the river; but, that wasn't what topic. He was referring to go in the establishment and fish for (top-half) women, I hope that you get the point and even try to bribe me. I told him that I got an image, name, reputation and military branch to protect. Hopefully, that the owners and/or workers not to have their patrons not to try to provoke any person to due anything from persons who're just walking by going to and/or from the west part of town. Fun little dive bar in Smithfield! Nice back patio. Cheap beers and seltzer's but no liquor. I believe the only food they have is pizza. They were also open late-worth it to check out if you're looking for somewhere to "keep going" after all other bars and restaurants have closed:) oh and our bartender was amazing! We love the LBJ! My husband and I have been going here for years. It only gets better. If you really want to go to a small town bar where the beer is cold and you're treated like a friend, this is the place. There's nothing fancy about the jug, and that's why we like it. We go to watch games, listen to live music, and sometimes we'll just go on a Saturday afternoon to just grab a beer or two and sit out on the deck. I will say, though, it's hard to stay for just one or two! Once you're there, you're gonna want to stay. The owners are some of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet, and all the employees are equally as sweet and welcoming! read more

So I'm new to the area, looking on Yelp to find a nice laid back place to enjoy a few brews. Found this spot and stopped in. What a pleasant supervise !!! Heather, the bartender is awesome ! And the patrons are very nice. And YES... they do have the coldest beer around !! And over 70 types to choose from. Smoking area is heated and has dart boards and TV. So no longer my smoking friends do we have to feel like the parade of second class citizens!!! I definitely will be returning !!! read more

Whats not to love? Its a historical landmark in Smithfield, originally purchased by Ava Gardner's brother in 1959. A sign inside says "Coldest Beer in Johnston County" and I do believe it! The place is full of friendly folks enjoying a cold one in the main building bar, the screened porch, or out on the deck near the Neuse River. I hear the pizzas are good and the jukebox is always playing. Nice Place. read more

We almost didn't go in this little bar, we wanted to watch the Steelers/Bears game, but from the outside we didn't think they even had a tv! Went inside to an unbelievable greeting, Erika the owner, introduced us to everyone in the bar. Needless to say, we watched the game, and met a great group of people. Cold beer, wine, but no liquor. I stopped by today and was able to chat for a while with Erica. What a wonderful bar, although it's not currently open for sit in business. Erica was very kind and able to sell me a bottle of wine that I'm happy to take home and enjoy. This is a very chill bar with a lot of history. They have good prices on the beer. The bar is right on the river and it has a nice outdoor drinking area. The owners usually work the bar on the weekends. They are really cool people and make a point to remember your name and get to know you. Very genuine people and a great place to go. read more

Is a historic landmark. A local hang out spot. They only service beer. They have awesome pizza. I'm not gonna lie is tombstone pizza on steroids but it taste damn good with a cold beer. Place has a indoor smoking heated area. See it for yourself. read more

I am a big fan of this great little dive bar. It's small and friendly; but I wish there were more tables inside. My favorite is the outside deck; great place to sit and enjoy a beer when its warm enough. read more
