If you don't know what it…read moreis, it's a non-profit organization that has been archiving pretty much EVERY SINGLE piece of both digital and print media -- whether it's a webpage, games that work only on MS-DOS, music, even cultural artifacts -- since the Internet was born. If you've ever used the Way Back machine to play the Oregon trail online or to look up what a website looked like in 1998, then you've used the Internet Archive. It's probably one of the most impressive and incredible FREE public service we have in the world that is *literally* run on good will, donations, and on the principle that access to information should always be free. We took a tour here on Friday when they do free tours (usually around 1PM) and you get to see the behind the scenes of how they archive works and some of the original servers that host ALL the data the year 1997 (yes, ALL 2-TB of it!!). The building alone is beautiful architecturally -- it used to be a Christian Scientist church -- and they still kept the pews in the main room, so it's a cool piece of history to step into. If you're free in a Friday afternoon in the Inner Richmond, highly HIGHLY recommend doing the tour and supporting (or donating) this wonderful institution. This is definitely one of the most underrated places in SF!

Tell them what you're looking for and they will find some titles for you. They currently are overstocked. A lot of people have been donating books, so thank you! Basically you park in the Playland parking lot (which has a basketball structure and a skate park). Enter through the brown doors and head left towards a narrow hallway and turn left again. You'll see the room with such great selection that is also well organized. I love that they have some high interest books that are categorized as special so you can only get five of those. They have all kinds of books... you name the genre they will have it. I'm talking about big books, dvds, books about diversity, family, puberty, biographies, picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, middle school books, everything just everything. What's surprising is that they also have class sets of books and you can check out which titles online, by phone, or in person. They provide boxes and bags there but you should bring your own. I've seen people bring suitcases. Haha. And yes everything is free! You sign out on a clipboard before you leave and you state which school you work at. This is just for them to keep track of who came in and who they're supporting! Check their hours on their website since they're not open everyday. And when they are open it's only for a few hours.

There's suggestions for preschools, day cares, and even the occasional naughty nanny report, (such as "I saw a blonde nanny on the phone ignoring her cute 2 year old brown haired toddler named joey as he walked along the edge of the deep end of the pool", etc. ) which I think is immensely valuable. I tend to use a combo of Southern Marin Mothers Club (SMMC) and Yelp when deciding on practitioners, where to go for haircuts, etc. It's also been great for finding vacation recommendations - it's not easy finding places to travel with a toddler! This is a resource that any mom in Southern Marin should have available to them - I use it almost daily!
