I'm writing this review not as a Food Bank patron, but as a donor. Everyone hears about the food drives at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and gives a can or two of food here and there, or gives $1 or $5 at the checkout stand, but most don't realize the desperate plight of the food banks. It's easy to appreciate the services the food banks provide to the unemployed, the elderly, and the disabled. But, what most don't realize is that there is a new parasitic drain on the food banks that's gnawing away at their resources. Without turning this into a social commentary or political rant, let's just say it's all about the low-cost retail sector. Corporate employers that refuse to pay a living wage actually provide new employees the address of the food bank and how to apply for assistance as though it were one of their company's employment benefits. The net effect of this is that food bank resources are being stretched incredibly thin to compensate for these abuses. What can the Hays County Food Bank do with your contributions? Well, for $20, they can provide a needy Hays County family with a Thanksgiving meal, including a frozen turkey and all the trimmings. Or they can help the Women's Shelter. Or they help stock the Crisis Bread Basket in Wimberley, which recently saw devastating floods. The list goes on and on. Many benefit from this one, simple, unadorned food bank. In Hays County, 24,000 people are defined as "food insecure". Food insecure means one lives in hunger or fears starvation. In plain-speak, it means you don't know where your next meal is coming from. In the San Marcos CISD, 71% of students qualify for school lunch programs. Texas ranks #2 for food insecurity for those under 18 and #4 for those over 50. Charity begins at home. While there are starving children and adults all over the world, let's not forget that they also exist right under our noses in America. Please give to your local food bank, and give generously. No one should have to worry about where their next meal will be coming from. Not at Thanksgiving. Not at Christmas. Not ever.

Let me answer that: Yes, you really do. We brought to them a curve-backed monstrosity of a sofa that we picked up at Goodwill for a song. It was a Victorian channel-back thing with horsehair cushions and it weighed 9,000 pounds. I think it had car shocks for springs. The sofa had spent a few terrifying months in our old, falling down shed and I'd be shocked if critters hadn't built a little subdivision in its undercarriage. (The old shed had rats. Lots and lots of rats. I'll just leave it at that.) Total Woman picked out some modern, funky upholstery and had Rawson's switch the channel-back design for a tufted back. They also tightened the strapping and restuffed the cushions. It was an overhaul, pure and simple. It took many months, but we weren't in a hurry and they knew it. Occasionally, we'd get a phone call with a question or two. On a couple of occasions, they asked us to drop by to confirm that they were going in the right direction. These guys clearly cared. When it was done, Rawson's showed up at our door and carried the sofa in. The owner -- not a young man himself -- and his father did the hauling. Combined age? I'd say 140. I'm not kidding. It was a sight to behold, but impressive. They would not accept help from me. The work was beautiful, and they made a broken-down couch extremely comfortable. So if you go, don't let the environs worry you. Rawson's is housed in a 90-year-old building built for a Model T dealership. Here, you will not be met with an overwhelming sense of order. It's a warehouse vibe, and a messy one at that. Supplies and furniture are everywhere. But who cares? They do great work. Our neighbors, whose home was built in 1913, trusted Rawson's to upholster their walls. Twice. Their WALLS, for God's sake. Now that says something.

What we witnessed during that tour was extremely concerning, and I feel it's important to share. We were observing the 1-2 year old classroom through the window while our tour guide, Amber, explained how each room has cameras, two staff members at all times, and rovers who assist during breaks. During this explanation, I noticed a staff member named Kiara open the door to the 2 year old classroom while using the staff phone, looking down the hallway, and then closing the door again. Since our child will soon be moving into the 2 year old room, I asked if we could observe that classroom as well. As we looked in, I saw Kiara interacting with a little girl wearing an apron. I couldn't see exactly what she was doing, but I did see her pick the child up by her arms, not under the armpits. It looked uncomfortable enough that I asked Amber, "How do you pick up the children here?" She answered, "Under the armpits." Right as she said that, Kiara placed the same little girl into a chair at a table. The child was upset and resisting having her apron removed. Kiara then tried to push the chair toward the table. The child pushed back. Kiara forcefully pushed the chair again -- multiple times -- and at one point pushed her all the way into the table. The child pushed herself back out again, still upset, and Kiara walked away. Moments later, Kiara approached a little boy. Again, she picked him up by the arms. This time, when she set him down, he immediately began crying and holding his arm like he was hurt. My wife saw it, I saw it, and Amber saw it. I told Amber she needed to intervene and get Kiara away from that child immediately. She looked unsure of what to do. I insisted. She went inside and used the staff phone to call someone, but Kiara remained in the classroom for another three to four minutes next to the boy. During that time, two other staff members stepped out of nearby classrooms -- not because of the incident, but to discuss something unrelated. I told them what was happening, and they also looked unsure of how to respond. One appeared to be a rover. When Kiara finally left the classroom, I told Amber they needed to check the little boy's arm and possibly take pictures. When the coordinator arrived five minutes after Amber got off the classroom phone, they had the boy outside the classroom and were looking at his arm. I pointed out a red mark. Amber said he had eczema. The coordinator reminded us they cannot disclose information about any child, which is true, but the lack of urgency from the staff was alarming. As we were leaving, the coordinator said, "I guess you guys don't want to finish the tour then?" I told her the tour was over. My wife remained polite as we walked out, but I was upset -- not just by what we saw, but by how casually the staff responded. There was no urgency, no immediate concern for the child's safety, and no clear understanding of how to handle the situation. All of this happened while we were on a tour with our own 19 month old child. What was even more concerning is that after witnessing all of this, the coordinator never followed up with a phone call to ask what happened or to clarify the situation. Not even a simple check in. For an incident involving a child potentially being hurt, the complete lack of follow up speaks volumes about how seriously they take these matters Parents deserve to know that their children are being handled safely, gently, and professionally. What we witnessed today did not reflect that.
