Amazing job!!! After years of tough wear in my home, my grandmother's sofa was in desperate need of repair and new upholstery. I'm not sure how old the sofa is but it definitely needed someone who could handle an old piece and restore it to its original condition. After reading the reviews here, I took it to Rawson's and was so happy I did. My sofa is beautiful and all frame damage has been repaired. I was even given the option to come check out the cushion thickness and stiffness to make sure it was what I wanted. A sane person might take one look at Rawson's rather dingy, unkempt storefront in downtown San Marcos and ask, "Hmmmm....do I want to trust these guys with reupholstering my couch?" Let me answer that: Yes, you really do. We brought to them a curve-backed monstrosity of a sofa that we picked up at Goodwill for a song. It was a Victorian channel-back thing with horsehair cushions and it weighed 9,000 pounds. I think it had car shocks for springs. The sofa had spent a few terrifying months in our old, falling down shed and I'd be shocked if critters hadn't built a little subdivision in its undercarriage. (The old shed had rats. Lots and lots of rats. I'll just leave it at that.) Total Woman picked out some modern, funky upholstery and had Rawson's switch the channel-back design for a tufted back. They also tightened the strapping and restuffed the cushions. It was an overhaul, pure and simple. It took many months, but we weren't in a hurry and they knew it. Occasionally, we'd get a phone call with a question or two. On a couple of occasions, they asked us to drop by to confirm that they were going in the right direction. These guys clearly cared. When it was done, Rawson's showed up at our door and carried the sofa in. The owner -- not a young man himself -- and his father did the hauling. Combined age? I'd say 140. I'm not kidding. It was a sight to behold, but impressive. They would not accept help from me. The work was beautiful, and they made a broken-down couch extremely comfortable. So if you go, don't let the environs worry you. Rawson's is housed in a 90-year-old building built for a Model T dealership. Here, you will not be met with an overwhelming sense of order. It's a warehouse vibe, and a messy one at that. Supplies and furniture are everywhere. But who cares? They do great work. They do business "the old fashioned way" and those kind of places are hard to find. Wouldn't be going back (probably 4th time) if we weren't happy with their work. Rawson's is a 5 STAR upholstery studio. Just picked up my furniture done in record time. They did a truly impeccable job and the gentleman showed professionalism and manners to match. I am still soaring about the artful job done because, in all categories of work sought, it is almost impossible to have work done nowadays and returned to you exactly as asked. He is truly an artist with that intrinsic trait of always doing a perfect job. He cares and has great pride in his work. The shop is at 323 S. I gave Joe Louis two wing chairs, an old office chair, a love seat/settee, and an antique carved rocker. He really knows his craft and did a wonderful job. My furniture looks spectacular and feels so comfy now. The newest pieces I took him were from the 1950s and pretty shabby, and so he really had his work cut out for him! He repaired the frames, installed springs, replaced stuffing, and built new cushions. It was a test of skill at all levels and he passed with flying colors! When I first moved to the area in 1978 I had need to have my old truck upholstered! I quickly learned that Rawsons' was THE PLACE TO GO! THe seats looked as good as new when I sold the truck many years later. I have not had a need for upholstery until lately. I looked and there was good ol Rawsons (now hidden being a new CVS) and on Hutchinson Street. I talked to Joe Lewis the owner for the past umpteen years. I found out he was not BOWER but a very fine gentleman and business owner! He is a little difficult to find as his entrance is an overhead door in the alley directly behind that behemoth of a CVS! Joe gave me a piece of foam (free of charge) but I had given him the wrong measurements! My bad! I took the piece of plywood back the second time, with my head hung low in embarrassment :-( Joe just said how about you leave it with me and I will take care of it for you? In a couple of days I went back by (this is a small Naugahyde cushion for a shop stool! Joe had not only used the foam cushion I had but had professionally upholstered it and did a darn fine job! I He had even added some thin inner covering to round out the shape! !again tried to pay him for his work and he said "maybe next time"! WOW. Next time came in a few weeks when I needed to extend the base for my RV bed. I again went to Joe and gave him the dementions. It was considerably larger so it cost me $5.00. If you don't know it foam rubber has become very expensive as it is a petroleum product! Once again I gave him the wrong size! I am a carpenters son and know good and well "measure twice cut once"! This time I took the plywood board with me. Joe said NO PROBLEM. He pre-cut the foam and glued it onto the board. Then, because I needed 4" he added and glued a 1" top on it for me! I thanked him and said "how much Joe"? He said NO CHARGE smiling. I told his he couldn't work for free and gave him $5. Ahh the wonders of live in a small Texas town! How wonderful to meet and come to know people like the Joe Louis's of the world! You can bet your sweet bippy I am glad he is there and I will no doubt go back to him with ANY upholstery needs! I could not be more pleased, satisfied, and yes, surprised, to get such great service at such a reasonable price. My old leather couch was "blown out" at one end. Joe thought he could do it for $250-$300 from photos I brought in. I brought in the couch and left it with him. A few short days later he called that it was ready, at about half the price originally quoted! When I saw the couch, Joe had not only fixed the webbing that supported the bad end, but all the webbing in my venerable couch. Also he had added padding to "fluff out" the armrest on the bad end of the couch. No matter where you sit, you have excellent support now - feels like new! I might even let guests sleep on it again - it's that comfortable! I just cannot say enough about the wonderful speed, service, quality, and price that I got from Rawson's! read more

took 10 leather cushions in to be re-stuffed. cushions were completed in 2 days which was much faster than i expected. joe was easy to work with and did a wonderful job. i would recommend this business to anyone who wants a quality job done quickly and at an affordable price. read more
