Big Brekky (Poached). Deliciousness all up in ma grillz

Whilst holidaying down in Normanville we dropped in for breakfast with a group of 6 of us. The owner & staff couldn't have been more accomodating to us and our little 2 year old. We scoped it out a little earlier during the day and asked what the likely hood would be for us to get a table for us all and they just asked us to give them 30mins before we head back. We went back (after wandering back to the house) and we we're greeted and walked straight to a table. The staff were on point; Prompt with service, quick to clean & clear tables around us. The food was delicious & the coffee great. I've always been taught that if you should try the coffee before adding sugar; if you need to add sugar is poorly made and crap coffee. No sugar required. Whilst the venue can be a little crowded once its busy; it definitely contributes to the great vibe that they've got going on here. Great interior design, great open style kitchen and counter area. Strongly suggest you check this out. Additionally; we didn't experience any of the insults or attitude attested to in one of the previous reviews. The team (and owner) there couldn't have been anymore amazing if they tried.

Great little cafe in main street normanville. Love the cosy atmosphere.

I've come here a couple of times because it's the only cafe close to my grandparents house. This cafe is gorgeous, well decorated and cozy. The lady owner and her younger crew are nice enough, there isn't a whole lot of one-on-one experience with them as they continuously pump out coffees, milkshakes, soup and cake! The impression I got from my outings here suggested it was a pleasant half-way stop, where people simply walked in with their family during Fleurieu Peninsula travels. Now, I've had a fair few milkshakes in my time, but these are the most amazingly frosty and tasty milkshakes ever! They're not like your typical Wendy's teenager who will sparingly give just enough chocolate topping to stop it tasting like plain milk. Anyway, the food. We shared two servings of fresh scones with jam and cream, all of which was fantastic. The scones were freshly baked (still warm) and they weren't frugal on the amount of jam and cream either (big pet peeve of mine). There really isn't a lot in little old Yankalilla, but every time I visit my grandparents I want to go back! A big thumbs up for this little cafe!

It's not just a cafe, they have their own label wines by the bottle or glass, they sell local organic produce and stock artisan breads and gourmet food lines. The fare includes local fish and chips, focaccias, usually a pie, curries, lasagnes and salads. So to the food. I had the New Yorker sandwich, a lovely big focaccia style bread brimming with good pastrami, sauerkraut, melty cheese, spinach and mustard pickles. Very tasty indeed. The Doc had the duck pie, great flavours but unfortunately nuked back to life in the microwave so pastry a bit soggy. Needed a little good quality chutney or something on the side too. All the meals are served in cute little cardboard boxes and they do a good coffee too. Come down in January when all the local holiday houses are occupied and this place is packed from morning to close. In a place with a dearth of places to eat, this definitely stands out amongst them.

The "cute little cardboard boxes" noted in a previous review go to landfill! This is very…read moredisappointing practice from a cafe that promotes values of sustainability, bio-diversity, fair trade and lowering the carbon footprint. A switched on older couple sitting next to us also pointed out the carboard cartons, wondering if they were recycled. I then asked the waitress if the packaging that our meal was served on would be recycled or go in the rubbish and she went to ask another staff person. She reported back that it would go in the rubbish as all meals are served ready-to-go and the cardboard cartons for dine-in meals saves on dishwasher water. I am unconvined by this logic and unimpressed by eco-marketing that embraces some aspects of sustainability to suit their buisness and disregards other elements such as recycling and contributing to landfill. This cafe does good business and would be generating significant amounts of waste from eco-minded customers who, based on the cafe's promotional information, believe they are supporting an environmentally sustainable business. It would not be difficult to recycle the cardboard or explore other options such as bamboo plates that are biodegradeable, employing a good old fashioned dishwasher, or using economy cycles on an industrial dishwasher and then recycling the greywater into their back garden cafe area where it could nourish herbs and vegies. It was awkward to eat my salad out of the carboard box inside a cardboard carton and my spanakopita was microwaved which made it soggy and not as fresh tasting as I had anticipated. The cushions on the outside chairs were very dirty and needed a wash too ... they don't need to be thrown into the garbage along with the cardboard plates! It is fantastic to see cafes like the Jetty Food Store supporting local growers , practising fair trade, selling organic produce etcetera, but dig a little deeper and the eco-bubble bursts. I won't be going back.
