Of course to accurately judge a Vietnamese restaurant I had to try the raw beef pho. It was very good. They must have read previous reviews because they now give you all the trimmings as standard. Well most of the trimmings. Owing to my gingerness I had to request chilli. Bill got salty fish and chicken rice (oh so nice) and a chicken laksa (ok but there's better nearby). Pho Sam is a pretty casual affair. You're there for the food not the atmosphere. Get in, eat, get out, repeat. We did go back again tonight for takeaway. We got more of the same plus Sichuan Beef. My brother reckons that wasn't very good. He's a guts and he didn't finish it. The lemon chilli chicken wings are not bad. Verdict: delicious Vietnamese but stick to the Vietnamese options on the menu.

The owner is an unsmiling lady with a fierce bob. She may seem scary at first but deep down she's a real softie, known to slide a free plate of spring rolls or a glass of red bean ice onto the tables of her regulars. Because in the end, it's all about good food at good prices.

Similar to the last time the food was really good but serving sizes not as generous as other Thai. This time they brought out two of our mains and the other two did not come out until we had completely finished the first ones. We actually had to get up, walk inside and ask where our other two dishes were. While we were waiting one server came out and asked if we were finished to clear our plates, not realising we still were waiting on more food. Luckily we were all sharing, it would have been a shame for 2 people to eat their entire meal while the other two watched. They did apologise and said they were understaffed and while I can appreciate this, it should have been communicated to us beforehand and we still should not have had to go in to ask for our other 2 dishes after two had been completely finished. One great thing about this restaurant though is that if you check in on facebook you get a percentage off your meal although I don't know if this promotion is still running. While the food here is really tasty, the portions are on the small side and the service on two occasions has been substandard. I might give them another try since we live so close by but if service is bad again it may be three strikes and you're out.

Dine in seating is minimal so reservations are essential. We indulged in a delightful prawn curry served in a pineapple. This brought back amazing memories of dining along the busy streets of Phuket. The curry had a little kick to it whilst being sweet from its pineapple casing. Whilst the seating is squishy, it's tolerable due to the amazing ambiance and delectable food.

I enjoy wrapping them in lettuce with the mint and carrots then dipping them in the Nuoc Cham (Vietnamese fish sauce). The fried rice is oily goodness with a nice crispy skin chicken that has moist and succulent flesh. The pork is tasty but you're likely to get a bit thirsty after a plate of it, so order the version with rice and veggies to offset this ;) The bowls of pho and crab noodle soup are so good not just in the middle of winter to warm your belly but well worth having in summer when they crank on the aircon inside.
