There's a 10-week challenge to see who got strongest/lost most weight, and a party at the end, and when my wife and I went, she was so impressed by the changes everyone had made that she joined, too! I've had THREE other friends join since then, and we bought a year's subscription for our employee. It's so easy to make friends there because everyone is going through such an intense experience. The joke is, "No one joins an aerobic kickboxing gym because everything is going perfectly in their life". :-) The other saying I hear is, "People join for the aerobic kickboxing, but stay for the weightlifting." Man, I never ever thought I'd be into weightlifting, but getting strong and gaining muscle (even though I'm in my 50s!) is amazing! The people here are so diverse...gay, straight, trans...no-religion, Muslim, Christian...people in their 20s and people in their 70s(!) I made more friends here in one year than I've made in the 20 years I've lived in St Paul. What a supportive community. It's all group classes, with an instructor and fun music, and it alternates between aerobic kickboxing days (using a bag, not going against another person), and weightlifting days. I had never done either before...and now I love them both! Definitely recommend FXB on Selby Avenue! :-)

Parking can be tricky at times, they have designated spots in the parking lot but those tend to fill up fast. There are plenty of meters close by but also free parking a block or so away. I tend to park for free on the side streets which is about a 5 minute walk. Overall a great gym to be a part of!

They also offer all props you could need at no extra cost. When you show up, it's at a (former?) church in the basement level. There's space to hang coats and leave shoes, and you sign in on a clipboard by the door. The space itself is warm and inviting with dark wooden floors. A couple of places charge $20-22 per class and that's with a package. So, yes, please! TimeOut's barre classes are called "Behind Bars". I've only had Madeline so far. I find her a very effective fitness instructor. Even though the classes have 20-30 students, she scans the room and offers up corrections and modifications. This impresses me. I also liked the fact that there seemed to be a wide variety of ages in my barre classes rather than a bunch of 20 something year olds clad in Lululemon with fake tans unlike a certain yoga chain that I will not mention by name. I would recommend signing up for class online. Also, you get a "no show" charge if you sign up for a class but don't show up but this is pretty common with barre classes. I haven't taken the other classes yet, but I might take a pilates one to switch things up. The studio itself is also very, very nice. There are dressing rooms, hot towels, and tea. Reception area people are nice also! So, you have to sign up for an orientation which at first I was kind of bummed out. But, when I went to the orientation, I found it really helpful and the instructor seemed knowledgeable and interested in everyone. Orientation is only about 15-20 minutes so not really a biggie. I would recommend trying to fit your orientation in before a class you want to attend. I've also not had parking issues at this place either but I usually take the first class of the day.

They told me they wanted to teach me the skills do do this on my own, and they certainly did. In the last year, I have gone back 4-5 times with a friend to just work out for fun, to learn a few new moves, and just stay motivated. Absolutely excellent. There's no unneeded glamor, no over-pumped-up trainers, this is real and this is practical. And it works. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is I would like to find a powerlifting contest trainer, and Powersource is more of a practical place. They train real people, all day every day, and that is good and they are very good at it, and the powerlifting trainer would kind of be overkill for them anyhow. Do yourself a favor and go there now.

I signed up for Xelia's level 1 class not knowing what to expect. A friend and I joked we could…read morehave a lot of fun, or it could be like 10-weeks of gym class from hell. Gym class for me was trying to stealth to the back of the line until class ran out. I was not, and still am not, terribly coordinated. But, Aerial arts seemed like a great way to build core, and a pretty unique hobby to boot. First day of class, we trained on three apparatuses: web (basically rope from gym class); tissue (sort of like climbing on mom's curtains); and trapeze (at about 4.5' rather than atop a giant circus tent). There's no slow move into Aerial arts: we will get strong and do circus. (Xelia's motto: Get strong, Have fun, Do Circus) Yesterday was session 4 of the 10-week session. I'm sore today and likely will be for the next few days. I left class yesterday accomplishing moves I couldn't do at my last class. I finished moves I struggled with at the beginning of last night's class. That is worth all the sore muscles today. Classes at Xelia's are meant to be taken on repeat. Session I is a mix of new students and returning. We rotate in small groups among 3 coaches who spot us and offer encouragement. It's physically demanding, and if you're like me, not too keen on heights, pushes comfort zones. I am excited re-evaluate my limitations as I progress.

While being supportive, everyone is coming from a variety of places in life and ages. I like it enough that I signed up for the upcoming Spring session. It's a crazy good workout. My arms are sore- but getting more accustomed to it all.
