My hair was done by the guy I'm guessing owns this branch. He is a nice Italian gentleman who provides you with tea or coffee and a good chat. He gave me lots of ideas of things that could be done to my hair- highlights to accentuate the colour, a full head of colour in my natural shade to hide old colour growing out, and never cut anything without checking it was what I wanted. I like the fact that, although he recommended I use a heat treatment on my hair, he did not try and sell me any products. Both times I have received many compliments after my haircut. It may not seem like a trendy or fashionable place to go but at least you know exactly what you're paying (rather than from £xx).

A friend recommended I pop in to speak to a colourist at their new shop (now Natural Colour Works), as recently I have tried something a little different with me hair... I started the process of dying my hair grey. Im 60 this year and I was so tired of dying my roots dark brown every 8 days.. I wanted to go dark grey all over and let my silver grow into that. But as anyone knows who has tried this.. its not an easy process. You have to go thru many stages to get where you want to be.. And the recent toner I had put on was a little too lavender for my taste and I wanted to replace that toner with another darker grey toner. But I wanted to use some more natural products if possible that would be gentler to my hair. So yesterday I went into NCW for a consultation. I spoke to a young woman in her 30's who looked at my hair reluctantly and asked me what it was that I hoped to achieve.. and then she said, " Well, we do have a wonderful natural product that would remove the toner you have.. But I certainly WONT DO IT.. as I think what you have done to your hair was a very bad idea.. we would NEVER do that here!.. Let me ask if anyone else here would be willing to do it." She went off and asked a senior stylist.. he tilted his head in my direction, made a face.. then shook his head. She returned. " He REFUSES to do it as well. But there is a place around the corner I can send you to called Bleach London, they will bleach your hair as much as you want them to... but that will certainly ruin your hair even more than you already have. I would never do what you have done to my hair.. as I love my long hair." to which I replied, " Let me get this straight. You say you have a natural product that will remove this toner without damaging my hair, but you are refusing to offer me that.... but are instead sending me somewhere where they will surely damage my hair? Sorry but i'm confused. I do not want to bleach my hair again.. I just want a different toner on it." She then went to 2 other stylists who also turned around and looked at me, made face of disgust and shook their heads NO. Their clients also turned around and stared at me.. (this is a very small salon, where you could hear everything that was being said) This public shaming made me feel just terrible. I left. I can honestly say, this was the most unpleasant, unhelpful and embarrassing hair experiences of my life. I have never encountered such rudeness or snobbery in a hair salon! To say to someone.. yes we "could " use our wonderful natural products on you but we refuse to do so.." What is the point of that? Other than to try to make me feel really terrible. I left the salon and walked to my car and burst into tears. I desperately do NOT want to be a woman in my 60's with died brown hair. I think it looks ridiculous. But really, who needs an experience like that? Trying to grow old gracefully is tough enough already! The salon was cozy and willing to schedule me as a walk-in for an appointment that day. The stylist was attentive - listening me describe in detail what I wanted and gently pushing me towards what was realistic**. She was friendly and talkative (very important qualities in someone who is going to spend hours hovering over your head, touching your hair). The products that the salon uses were sweet-smelling and didn't feel harsh on my hair. * Bleach London would've made me do a 48-hour skin test before touching my hair. NCW also has a skin test policy (to make sure people aren't allergic to their toner), but they were able to accommodate me by dying my hair without toning it. Cheers to those who accommodate! ** I have naturally jet-black hair at the roots and honey-blonde everywhere else. I wanted to go full platinum, which just wasn't happening in the four hours of time I had.

Haringtons is a glamourous salon and they serve you hot drinks and juice and let you read magazines whilst you wait for your roots to take. This salon uses Loreal products and Keratase, which they sell along with Redken. I left because Lynsay left and she is my hair wizard. I may go back and get cut by Victoria and talk about Pidgeon Detectives. Go see Victoria for a cut!

So with this phobia I find it difficult to like a hairdresser, especially when they want to engage in mindless chatter about holidays and other such crap. As West End hair salons go, Haringtons is as sleek and glossy as the next but much quicker to drop in a 20% discount if they feel you are going to walk out the door. I also discovered that the staff of Haringtons are actually quite nice and not that intimidating. Yes of course there is the quota of bitchy queens, but the girl I got was so sweet and friendly. So I let her cut all my hair off while we chatted about boyfriends. If you are a new customer you get a welcome pack with discounts. I probably would actually go back here, just not any time soon of course.

"Just call me on the day and let me know you're on your way". Perfect. No pressure. The Salon is lovely. Bright, clean and welcoming. Even better, Ron was super friendly and went out of his way to ask what I'd like to achieve with my hair now and what I'd like to work towards in the future. My hair was a dry, mess of split ends and in desperate need of a retouch (I have Afro hair which is chemically straightened). But I left 90 minutes later with it bouncing on my shoulders and blowing in the wind like a Pantene commercial. Bonus stars for Ron as I was amazed to have left with refreshingly simple, accurate advice on how to wash and dry my hair so that it stays silky smooth every day. The result: A busy work week later and my hair is STILL smooth, straight, moisturised and simply shakes into style in the morning. Just great!

Unlike when cutting hair wet, you can see how the hair falls naturally when it is dry & your hair will stay that way when you leave (no more waking up the next day & being disappointed that it looks different to how it did in the salon) 2. You can be in and out quickly as you don't need to get your hair washed & blow-dried (unless you want to, of course) 3. It makes it v. cheap (Ron does a dry cut for just £20, add £15 for a blow-dry) You don't need to make an appointment, but you might have to wait for a bit of you are visiting on a Saturday. You won't get coffees or drinks like you do in some places, but if you want a quick, affordable & stylish cut, Ron is your man! He does gents too, as well as ladies & Afro hair too. Remember to bring cash though, as he doesn't take credit/debit cards.

So on Tuesday's, if you book a cut and colour, the colour is half price! Which is what I always do. And they also give you a loyalty card which does entice you to come back. I arrived and within a minute was checked in and told to sit in the waiting area. After a couple of minutes my hairdresser came over and discussed with me what I wanted done. As I was going for a cut and colour, she discussed with me what colour I wanted and how I wanted the cut, advising me on what would suit me and what wouldn't. She then mixed the dye up in the back and put it on. Whilst it was on she checked it and massaged it in when necessary and took it off at the right time before cutting and styling it. I was also offered and given tea and water (although there was other options available). The service is great and you really do leave feeling like you've been pampered!

I sent an e-mail agreeing to this time. I then got an e-mail back from Lesley Mcintyre a few days later (attaching my previous e-mail agreeing to the time) asking whether I was coming. I sent another e-mail saying yes I was. I then got yet another e-mail back from her (again attaching the e-mail trail with my e-mails saying yes I was coming) asking whether I was coming. I sent another e-mail back saying yes I was coming. And then I got another e-mail back from Lesley McIntyre (attaching the e-mail trail showing all my e-mails saying yes I was) asking if I was coming. In the end I just phoned up and confirmed. I could have set this aside as a technical glitch, blaming the computer and e-mail systems, rather than Lesley McIntyre herself. However, when I did go to the appointment she was rude, disrespectful and unpleasant. I assume that this was because of the e-mail issue, even though she was the one who apparently didn't know how to read an e-mail. Also the haircut itself was really odd - it flicked up on one side and flicked down on the other side - something my hair has never done before. On the whole a disappointing cut and very disappointing and immature personal behaviour on her part. Not recommended.

It never feels as though you're having whatever the cut of the season is, you get what you ask for and what suits you. I've also had my colour done by Mikko at the salon and brazilian blow dry, all superb. The staff are talented, professional and charming which is a fantastic combination. Wiithout wanting to sound vain I usually take a few of their cards with me when I leave so that I have someto hand out because so many girls ask me who does my hair.
