Normally I'm not a B&B type, especially travelling solo, but I was very happy with my stay at Mairlys. I had their single room, which I don't think was used too often (I could be wrong) but it was still kept clean & was ready for use. The room had a bathroom, but the shower was in the hall just outside. Technically its a shared shower room, but even with the house full I had it to myself. Bernard & Marian were great hosts. The breakfasts (I always got the full Welsh breakfast) were very well prepared and for my trip up Snowdon they made me a nice take away breakfast & lunch that was ready early in the morning. Its in a great location on the main road not far from the railroad & center of town & its an easy walk to everything. Someday I'd like to get back to North Wales & Betws-y-Coed, & when I do I I'd defintely stay here again.

The food is excellent, mostly local produce and if you ever get chance to book for Mothers Day lunch you wont be dissapointed. The Rooms are elegant and traditional whilst still offering space and all the facilities you need for a comfortbale stay. Friendly Staff make it welcoming. Situated in the quiet village of Penmaenmawr in the heart of Snowdonia National Park, these…read morecottages offer stunning views and utter peace and tranquility. We stayed in a cottage that comfortably slept three (and maybe four if two are children) for £300 for three nights. It was clean, with a huge bathroom (towels, etc, supplied), fully equipped kitchen (even milk, eggs, butter and bread were provided upon arrival for that first breakfast) and outside seating. The cottages are located a couple of miles from the village centre and there is access to endless walking trails a short walk from the front door. There are also a couple of restaurants and pubs all located within walking distance (but far enough not to disturb the peace of the place). The lovely horses in the pasture right across the cottage and the nesting pair of hawks were our only noisy neighbors. The only thing I didn't like was the 10am checkout.

Its a really well appointed appartment for two people, with a spacious lounge, nice kitchen with fridge, electric cooker and microwave and one bedroom. The lounge has the basic sky tv package so after a hard day on the hills you can veg out in front of some junk tv! Its only a three minute walk into the centre of Betws y Coed with all the amenities it offers. Only one thing was disappointing really - there is no bathroom as such, there is a toilet with wash basin off the lounge, and in the bedroom there is what is described as a 'double' shower but in reality is just a large cubicle with a very temperamental electric shower - don't expect to soak your aching bones in a bath after a hard day's mountain walking!

Had a tomato soup, steak sandwich with fries and a jacket potato with beans and cheese. Staff was very friendly. The order took pretty long to arrive, but it was clear the meal was freshly made. So it was fine to wait for it. Jacket potato was very nice. You won't be hungry after. The tomato soup was a bit on the thick and sweet side. The fries were crispy and hot. The meat in the steak sandwich of high quality. Very juicy and tender. Prices for all items very fair. All in all a good lunch. Nice setting, very comfy and relaxed.

I was going to stay at the hotel and I should have done as the rooms have all the facilities and a buffet breakfast as well as being reasonably priced, well in Beaumaris anyway. I did however stop for a drink. The hotel does look dated inside and it seemed busy with lots of staff milling around and guests of all ages included four-legged friends. The young and old seem to separate themselves. Younger folk running in and out of the venue or relaxing in the bar area. The older crowd get the sea views at the back sat in beautiful chesterfield chairs having cream tea or ice cream. Well worth a stay or visit.

I ordered the smoked hake and chorizo risotto, because I usually love chorizo. But I ended up fishing it out and stacking it on the side, as it was so spicy AND gristly that it overpowered the dish. With it out of the way, the rest of the dish was quite good. My husband had the cow au vin, which was outstanding. I'd return just for that. I was jealous.
