The inside is unique as we discovered the outdoor rooftop eating area after several stairways and tight turns. The restaurant area is surprisingly large. We ate in the upstairs outdoor area which was charming. For my order, I tried to order the scone meal but they were out of them so I got the bacon and egg sandwich on a brioche bun as a backup. It came with two hash brown triangles and was fresh and filling and very yummy. My dining companions had the Veg Cockney which is a full vegetarian breakfast and another had the Eggs Scotland (Eggs Benedict with Scottish smoked salmon). I tried a bit of each and enjoyed them. The Clarence Court Leghorn Eggs they use have a brilliant orange-ish yellow to the yolk and I swear they taste better than the ones in the States. Not the most flavorful although lovely to look at. I always find chai without dairy milk is just never as good, sadly. The waiter got my order wrong- I ordered the Kumara rather than the corn fritters- but another staff member graciously took the plate away (although the fritters looked temptingly delicious!) As there was quite a long wait for the replacement, he offered a drink on the house so I got the antioxidant revive. It was bright pink, sweet and tasty. Once my dish arrived I was thrilled how good it was: a very generous arrangement of sweet potato/ feta and pumpkin seeds all tasted wonderful. I cleaned my plate. My friend got the avo bread as vegan so just as mashed avo and bread, and a matcha latte. Service otherwise was very good. I also got the vegan wrap for takeaway. I had it for lunch the next day and wow it was great! Really tasty mash of lentils and sweet potato and quite filling.

The kitchen is underneath the café, and so all the food is delivered upstairs by dumb waiter, which is a nice touch, and we got plenty of toast with our breakfasts. It was relatively quiet when we went (on a Sunday early afternoon) and the place had a calm, peaceful vibe. The only downside is that after 3pm they stop serving fry-ups - they still have a delicious looking menu, but as a fan of an all-day breakfast, that's a bit of a shame. Otherwise, the place is lovely, and surprisingly tranquil given it's right next to a busy main road.

I opted for the "halal" breakfast which consisted of beans, over easy eggs, ham, hash browns, roasted tomatoes, and a side of toast. Nothing fancy. However what they lacked in pizzaz they made up for executing simple flavors flawlessly, and it had to be if they were going to serve a simple breakfast. The surprise star was the toast. I've been to many high end restaurants/cafes in the USA and it always baffles me that they manage to burn the toast. I mean, it's toast for crying out loud! My only qualm would be the coffee. It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't delicious either. This is where you could taste "affordability". But it was a minor, minor, thing after all breakfast comprises of the main dish not drink, and they surely delivered in the most important part of anyone's day!

But the service was the sloooooooooooooooooooooooowest I'd had for a long time and the prices weren't too pretty either. Would I go again? Yes. As with most of the cafes round here it's a little over priced and full of French collage kids at lunchtime. I wouldn't pick this as my first choice, I'd rather head for Paul's to be honest, which is of a similar price. The cappuccino's, hot chocolate and the cookies are particularly good, but whatever you're eating is spoiled by the music blasting out. I find it really odd that a little cafe would do this to your ears, when it would benefit much more by nurturing a chilled out coffee culture vibe. The owner Ben, can be a little imposing too, although if you fancy a heated debate about one of a million conspiracy theories he's throwing about then it might be your cup of tea! Well, at least I can't blame it for lacking character. Tip: Earplugs needed, for both music and owner.
