NASTY NASTY NASTY elderly woman on the far left needs to RETIRE!! horrible, disrespectful,…read moreincredibly unhelpful and simply the worst customer experience I have EVER had. By far the rudest and most incompetent person I have ever experienced working a customer facing job. A complete idiot. I have lived in Somerville for over 4 years and this place is a nightmare every time you need a permit renewed. I would rate in the negatives if I could.

I never received a single snow emergency notification a day in advance after signing up. The city does not provide any public parking lots during snow emergencies, and there is literally no space to park on the odd-numbered side. I went to their hearing office, and the woman there sat for half an hour doing nothing. When she finally noticed us waiting for an appeal, she acted surprised. Trying to explain the situation felt pointless -- she completely ignored what I said and simply told me to pay within 10 business days. Filing a second-level appeal for a $100 fine costs $200. Do you really need that much money from residents? I would honestly prefer to have the male hearing officer handle the case, as he was much more professional and willing to listen. The other male hearing officer was much nicer and did a far better job compared to her.

Want to go on Monday to pick up your book from interlibrary loan? Well you're in luck my friend-- we're open from 10AM to 9 at night! Hooray!!!! Oh, did you have some other Monday commitment? No problem, why don't you stop by on Wednesday! Oooooh, sorry man. Nice try, but we keep a strict 2-6PM policy on Wednesdays. It's just the way we roll. And same with Fridays. Oh, did you say you wanted to pop by on Saturday? Yeah, tough sh*t. We take the weekends off too. Try next Monday! I mean, for the love of God, the whole point of branch libraries is that it makes it more CONVENIENT for local residents to pop by and grab a book. Instead, it would have been more than worth my time to drive/walk/crawl/take the 88 down to Somerville Central and grab that damn copy of Yo, Rigoberta Menchu. I've learned my lesson. And seriously: how much $$$ does it take to staff the library? $10 an hour? Seriously. Time to call 311 Direct. ANGST! OUTRAGE! ENTITLEMENT TO MY BOOKS!!!!!111111

Good to know: 1)…read moreThis place is teeny tiny. 2) The selection skews heavily towards kids books and young adult fiction. 3) The hours are less than ideal; and it's closed on weekends. 4) On-hand media selection is limited. 5) There are only a few computers, but there's almost always one available. 6) There's a convenient drop box for books outside the front doors if you need to return books when they are closed. Better to know: 1) In person, over the phone, or on-line (with a minuteman library card) you can request materials from any other library in the minuteman network, and they will be delivered here. They will e-mail you when they get there, and all you have to do is walk in and hand them your card at the desk. Saving you time, and frustration. You can also renew books on-line. 2) Libraries are very in right now. Save money and be green all at the same time!

But still, the awesomeness of the library completely outweighs the fact that it's hours are not what I would want them to be. The staff is unbelievably friendly. Sometimes I feel silly for always checking out books that are less than the highest quality of literature (can I help it if young adult sci fi makes awesome bus reading?), but they don't judge. I'm also continually impressed with their DVD selection. Awesome service, awesome selection, less than awesome hours, but still definitely a good alternative to paying for books that I'll just have to move or paying to rent DVD's!
