Once you fill out an application, they will send a bus to pick you up and drop you off for free. The building, where they do the interviews in person, is very clean and quiet. I did take off one star because, upon arrival, they told me I had not submitted an application. Luckily, I saved my email proof of receipt of my application. Once I showed them that, they were able to find my application after all. THE DEAL: if you can't drive, and struggle to afford transportation, perhaps MBTA's THE RIDE can help!

But here I am writing an update mostly to comment on the Swap Shop within. This is the place where town residents can drop off gently used goods (no clothing or upholstered furniture) which can then be taken away for free by any other resident who sees what you've dropped off and wants it. The Swap Shop was closed for the better part of a year due to the pandemic and it is newly re-opened. Lately I have undertaken the task of cleaning out the attic, basement and some kitchen cabinets. I am truly into minimizing...we have accumulated so many things over the years that we don't need and that we rarely use. Some of the items are still in great shape and so I've boxed them up and brought them to the Swap Shop. I feel good giving away items that are still usable and in good shape to others who might want them. Last week when I dropped off several boxes of things, I saw that someone had left a complete and lovely set of Noritake china..service for 8. I had no use for it but it was beautiful...I hope someone nabbed it. I have also been overhauling my clothes closets which is something I do every couple of years....I am ruthless about this task and in the past few years have employed the Marie Kondo method...if it doesn't bring me "joy" (and if I haven't worn it in the past year), out it goes. (I use Marie Kondo's method for folding clothes now too: it's a game changer...you won't believe the space you'll find in your drawers). With this most recent clothes-closet-cleanup I ended up with 3 large bags of clothing...much of it clothes I wore to work and since I am newly retired have no use for anymore. Over the years the task has gotten easier because I have been buying fewer clothes. I brought the bags of clothes to the Town Dump to deposit in the Goodwill bins. Years ago, I used to bring some of my used clothes to a consignment shop in town but I can't be bothered anymore. I also just feel better donating to a place like Goodwill. We still don't have curbside garbage pickup in Hingham, but going to the Transfer Station is not without its own "charm"...running into neighbors, feeling good about sorting your trash for recycling, and donating things to Goodwill and the Swap Shop.

It is located 100 yards from Boston Common and a 7 minute walk to the T. Beacon Hill is a wonderful historic neighborhood. 6-8 Chestnut Street (Beacon Hill Friends House) is a mansion built in 1805 with a music room with a Steinway Grand Piano and a 5,000 volume library and a lovely outdoor deck. All these resources are available to visitors staying in one of the 2 bedrooms devoted to Bed and Breakfast. The residents were very friendly to me when I stayed there for 4 nights. Parking is available in the Boston Common garage 7 minutes away. You have to be a little self-reliant as the bathrooms are shared and you have to make your own breakfast in the spacious kitchen, cereal, eggs, toast, oatmeal, tea. There is a library of Boston handbooks to borrow. The only drawback is that there no air-conditioning so avoid July and August unless you can take it hot. For a small fee, you can join the residents for a staff prepared dinner Monday-Thursday if you give 1 day notice.

He does need to come and go so isn't on a 9-5 schedule. Worked well for me. The old (1805) house is in a residential area, on a hill, in close proximity to the beginning of the "Freedom Trail". The house itself is several stories high but with an elevator (important to me with a heart condition). I was in an airy good sized room in a double bed (I think but not positive...maybe queen). The bathroom was shared and down the hall. Only once did a resident and I arrive at the bathroom door at the same time. He was a lovely gentleman in his 80s, whose comment was, "Never mind, I'll use the one downstairs." I met 5 of the residents. They ranged in age from 80s to early 30s. All were friendly, interesting to talk with and helpful. One gal even shared some of the applesauce she was making while I was eating breakfast. (Such a treat on a cold November day). You are in charge of making your own breakfast and cleaning it up. Food stuff is supplied. Boston is a wonderful, walkable city with this home in a good location. I walked all day, came home and crashed. I never ate at the house since I didn't know what my schedule would be and they naturally had to know prior to dinner at 6:30 p.m. But, for a very modest fee, you could share dinner with the group. Wish I could have. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. This isn't a hotel! It's a residence. People live here and they aren't meant to serve your every need. They have adult craft nights here the first Tuesday of every month except during the summer. They also offer adult yoga every other Wednesday. Staff is friendly as well. This library is part of Nobel network so if you don't have a library card specifically for Saugus you can use your library card for whatever library of its in Nobel net and return to that library as well.

The books are arranged by fiction and nonfiction but they also have sections for specific interests such as "trucks" and "sparkly" where you can quickly select a few books based on your child's interest.
