Here is how this all went down: It's the day before Thanksgiving. Kelly G. is packing up the car so that we can take off to my family's house in Maine. Outside, next door at the Y-Not convenience a police woman is getting her paper. She walks outside, smells the burning plastic smell, looks around and sees smoke coming out of our chimney, then calls 911. The chimney was busted and the smoke was drafting out of it instead of into the house so Kelly G and my best friend have no idea what is going on. The fire department comes running up the stairs as Kelly is taking stuff down to the car and is like, "Where's the fire?!?!" To which Kelly replies, "I don't know, where IS the fire?" They wind up chopping a big hole in the roof to get to the fire and hose the thing down. Meanwhile I get back to my desk from lunch and give her a call to let her know I'll be getting out at 3:00 and she tells me the roof is on fire. I repeat her, and my coworker starts singing the roof is on fire song as I dash out the door to get home. When I get to our house, the street is blocked off, there are 3 fire trucks around the house, and I'm directed to the Fire Chief. He lets me know that the house is not livable and we'll have to get all our valuables out that day. This is the reason they get 5 stars: He asks if I have the land lord's number and tells me I need to call him. I'm like, "Really? There is a hole in our roof, our stuff all buried in rubble, I'm homeless, and I'm the one who has to call my land lord and tell him the house burned down?... Can you do it?" The fire chief let me know that it wasn't exactly standard procedure, but that he'd be willing to make an exception. He called and explained everything to my landlord who lives in Florida. That was above and beyond the call of duty. Bravo Somerville FD.

Some of the negative posts on this website are suprising & don't seem representative at all - I suspect some people are taking out personal issues on Thayer...possibly based on the enforcement of condo rules & regulations or Board decisions, that Thayer had no control over and had to enforce because that's their job. If you choose Thayer your property management company, you will find that they are reliable, knowledgeable, and there when you need them. They have their phone number posted in every building of my complex because the want residents to call them about any problems or questions. They respond REALLY quickly to urgent/emergency calls, at any time of day (in the evening they have an answering service take your calls and notify them of an emergency, even if it's 1am). And I've found that for non-urgent questions, they typically respond within 48hrs which is reasonable. Thayer is also great about advising the condo board & allowing the Board to be as involved or un-involved as they want to be in managing the condo. Thayer leverages their years worth of experiences with contractors to the benefit of any property...it's really helpful to have a property manager sharing their knowledge with Board members so that the Board can make decisions that are in the best interest of all residents at the property. Most people living in a condo managed by Thayer have no idea how much work they do "behind the scenes" to make your condo run smoothly. In my time on the Board of my condo, I've worked with many of Thayer's staff and had good experiences. We even had one property manager donate some spare plants from her own yard for us to plant on our condo grounds - that's just above & beyond! There's not much more you can ask for from a property management company...they do their job well, they're pleasant to deal with and they're actually good people too.

So, in other words, if you don't get an A you fail your assignments. I withdrew, brought this to the attention of the Dean, and asked for financial credit so I could take another course instead. She did not respond but simply forwarded my concern to a registrar who refused to do anything about it. The registrar said, wrongly, that the professor was acting in accord with HES policy. The grading system on the website does not in point of fact map onto the grading system of all the professors. So be forewarned that you may end up with a professor who will give you an F if you get less than an A. Don't waste your money at HES and don't expect the administration to act justly. I've matriculated a different program. HES just lost the 30K they would have made if they would have simply rendered a just decision.

There are no Financial Aid options coming from the university itself, and 2 out of 3 student loan companies that their office recommends actually don't really accept Extension School students. The third one needs a lot of extra paperwork that the school isn't willing to help with. In order to enroll you need to pay in full and you don't get a letter of enrollment until after the drop out period, when it's too late. You can't get a loan without paying and you can't get enrolled without a loan. So it's a chicken and egg situation that has no end. They say the university helps cover for you until the loan is approved, but in reality, you have to pay in full first and they will reimburse you after the loan is paid. Which defies the entire point of asking for financial assistance. There is a very short window in which to apply for the loan after registration before being dropped out for non-payment. Paperwork takes more than a month, which is not nearly enough to get everything done. I've spent hours and hours with both the lending officers and the financial aid officers, and in the end, nothing got solved. Nothing. I am unable to join the courses. I am unable to get a loan. I feel like my potential is wasting away... Harvard has failed me.
