The Local on Jasper has a great chill atmosphere! As soon as you walk you pretty much automatically feel relaxed. Everything that is on your mind is drained away because of the ambiance in the room, the decorations on walls, and the full staff. They are great specials and lots of beers on tap being a variety of the bigger brands and micros as well. The rotating tap is fun to try out as it will be a different type of beer for the season. They also have mystery wine! Well, it's just house wine, but they call it mystery wine, which kind of makes it fun :) The food was great when we went - we had burgers. Very tasty and the plate was very filling. Pretty much wherever you go it's the staff that makes the difference and The Local on Jasper is no different. I've gone here a few times for drinks and also specials that they have on. I really love and enjoy the atmosphere with the open kitchen so that you can watch your pizza cook in the oven while you wait. The staff is okay, always very forgetful. One incident the waitress left our drinks sitting for 20 minutes and we watched them. She made a lot of errors on our bill. The food prices are high for me, but their specials are worth it. Stopped by here a few weeks back. Was rushed ordering a beer that was mostly foam. Bar be packed and it was late, so I suppose I can't get too upset. Otherwise good service. I've been one time before, I believe I got the Truffle burger. Not bad service back then either. I like the bike racks outside the bar. You hang it up by a hook and lock it to chains. Went here on a late Friday night. It was buzzing because it was just post Oilers game. However, we managed to snag a table. Service was good considering that she was completely full. She was happy, kind and courteous. Our water glasses sometimes were not filled but we couldn't fault her. Perhaps there should have been more wait staff on the floor during a known peak time. We just wanted a snack so my husband ordered the beef tacos and I ordered the shrimp and pesto pizza. Both came out in a timely matter, and they were tasty. I would totally order my pizza again and it was a really great deal for happy hour prices. Looking for Friday after work drinks while in the area. My friend and I went in hoping for comfy seats in a cosy corner so we could catch up. There is a lounge area that was super chilled and had comfy sofas, nice decor including a vintage bike on the wall. We liked the vibe. This place has a fun display of the kegs through a glass window with a giant liquor sign above it. That was kinda cool. We ordered two glasses of wine from our server, who was like a supermodel (not joking). We chose the Chardonnay and we had a few glasses. I first discovered this most underrated gem on Jasper Ave in the winter of 2018 as I sauntered in seeking only a glass of red wine and optimistically average food. I ordered what they describe on their menu as 'mystery red' for wine and a Diavola pizza as I learned they have a wood fired pizza oven they inherited from a past restaurant tenant (Joey Jasper) and sat at the bar itself and was served by a bartender named Nicole. She introduced herself and happily suggested a pizza based on my preference for savoury and Neapolitan pizza tastes! What I came away with can best be described by some of life's great unexpected surprises. Remember when you reached into a pocket of a jacket you hadn't worn since last winter and found $20 you forgot you tucked in there? Remember when you were late for an important date/meeting and magically hit every single green light in the world and made it EARLY?? Remember what it felt like to fit into your favourite summer jeans after a winter of smashing poutine and fried chicken only to find that somehow they hadn't set you back but actually magically made those jeans fit better than ever??? Well you get the picture! The pizza was absolutely divine, with the nicest blend of bite, chew and aftertaste combined with the nice char on some of the bubbles created in their caputo blend crust! The house made fennel sausage and chili oil confirmed it was a great decision to skip breakfast earlier that day to save room for this :) Nicole was awesome in checking in on me and how everything was as well. Overall, this experience was so unexpected and delivered on every aspect of what hospitality and food shld be! Everything from a casual vibe enabling great conversation, to popping in randomly for a bite to eat, ample free parking out back, to the personal attention from the servers and awesome layout of the inside space, the cleanliness of the bathroom/venue, open kitchen view of the cheerful pizza artisans! Exactly like the unexpected surprises I detailed above! Overall, this place is a gem, and a MUST VISIT on any short or long visit to Edmonton, and if you live in Alberta's capital city, you might just become a regular after just one visit! Came here with a friend Friday during happy hour. I got here at 3:15 - early enough to snag a table out on the patio since it was a beautiful day. I ordered the Sangria which was decent for the price point. Along with the one drink, I snacked on two of the happy hour specials. For $5 each I got the guacamole & chips and the Szechuan edamame. Both were well prepared - the chips even being warm when they arrived. Love the Szechuan edamame as it tastes just like the one that Joeys used to serve up when they were in the same location. I could eat those all day long. Service was pretty lack lustre. Not sure if it's because I showed up with my toddler in tow- which reminds me to add that this place would not be considered child-friendly. The server was not overly friendly nor did she check up on us much. The atmosphere on the patio was loud and festive - with groups of guys playing different games offered on the patio. I went here for a birthday party for a friend who had reserved a table for us all. There was 8 of us altogether. We had no problems finding parking and were happy to see that the place was full but not too noisy or crowded. All of the staff were professional, young, and fun. A friend and I came in for a quick bite at 6pm on a Saturday night. The first thing we noticed was that the music was very loud. I get the Saturday night vibe and could be a good choice if you were starting an energetic night out, but I probably wouldn't recommend popping in for a dinner at this time- as it pretty hard to hear the person beside you. ( a couple actually left behind us because of this) Moving on to food and service- I had the shrimp dumplings and the tacos. Shrimp dumplings were on the softer side, could have had a touch more cooking. On the positive side- they were bursting with flavour and had a great little kick to them that was actually spicy! The tacos were around 12.50 for three tacos- leaving them at about four dollars for a taco that could easily fit in the palm of your hand. The flavours were there, the only thing I noticed was they were a little over sauced, but hey- better than dry! We also received our food very fast- like before we got our drinks- which I never complain about as its a Saturday and the bar looked like they were busy pumping out drinks for anticipated guests. Our server was quite lovely. she was genuine and bubbly. Made sure everything was okay. Overall the review mostly stems from the ambiance and slight tweaks on the food that could have been done if it wasn't so rushed- as it wasn't really busy. Lots of seating from bar stools to couches​ and everything in between, plenty of screens everywhere, good tunes, fast and friendly service, awesome fish tacos with quality hot sauce + slaw and they hold together till the very last bite even when drenched in hot sauce - critical for any serious taco fiend. Not usually a fan of chains but If I lived in the neighborhood I imagine this would be my local haunt. Hit and miss, both menu and service. Some staff were rude shysters and some were very good. Some dishes were good, others should have been served to pigs. E.G. After being told 'everything is perfect here', I was served a salad with fruit flies and burnt edamame which went back immediately. I'd take a guess that Sysco supplies them. Atmosphere usually good, sports usually on TVs, upkeep and cleanliness was good. However, on the contrary, one male bartender was so vile and tortuous he deserved something like a punch in the mouth; in a different environment, what he was doing is called 'intentional infliction of mental suffering'. Just that once was detrimental to perception of the business. If Boston Pizza gets 3 stars, Original Joe's gets 4 stars, Canadian Brewhouse is at 3.5, Earl's at 4-5, LOCAL gets about 3.2 stars. Ignoring the bad bartender, consistency with recipes and some additional refinements cooking would garner... about 3.5-3.7? Is it problematic staff turnover issues they experience? Slightly niched as a business, but would not survive a franchising effort in Canada or greater North America, IMO. read more

Best fish tacos? I think you have to read to understand why I think these are the best in Edmonton. Now let's get to the point. I enjoy food, and I love a good taco. And if you were going to tell me a pub would serve a mean and tasty taco, I would have not disagreed but asked again "where?". Take me to July 17 when I discovered with a friend that the fish tacos were in fact the best I've had. Fresh shell, lettuce and a beautiful piece of fish, lightly battered and delightfully yet perfectly fried. This topped with a cilantro and tomato like topping and you have a delightful taco. Add some of the red hot sauce and some lime, and BAM! Heaven. I cannot wait to relive the moment. But there's more, the sweet potato fries are delicious and the service was amazing. Not the cheapest place to eat but it is totally worth the cost to eat a darn good taco. Happy tacoing! read more

I came here recently with a group and was pleasantly surprised! I'd been to the Local in South Common before and had honestly not had the best experiences and so I've been keeping my distance since. I went to the one downtown as it was organized by others and actually really loved it. They really transformed the space from the former Joey's - it's bright and airy and has a comfortable pub vibe to it, while still being a bit 'upscale'. What I really loved were the deals and service! Service is always pretty dependent on whom your server happens to be that evening, but I got a good one. When fish tacos were unavailable due to some kitchen fan issues, she brought me some guac and chips on the house. And it was SUCH GOOD guac - they bring the ingredients separately to your table and make it for you right there (even on a busy packed Friday night!). It was absolutely delicious. When I was paying up, she mentioned their EVERY DAY happy hour (3-6pm) deal is $2.50 tacos and $2.50 beer - so you can get a taco and beer for $5 total! What a fantastic deal - I'll definitely be back soon to get my missed fish taco. read more

Service was great. Sierra was our initial server during the Croatia/England game and was pretty amazing, they've set us up with the same table every game (for good luck). I love going here for the patio and the food is usually very good. However, tonight a bit disappointed with the one issue with the bill. There were a couple of us and we asked for separate bills. The first bill I got was all wrong so got it fixed. When it came back it was still wrong, with the wrong beers charged, but I decided wasn't worth the trouble to argue over it so just paid it. Otherwise we did get great service from our main waitress and the other ones. As mentioned, the food is usually good, the ahi tuna burger is one of the best I have had. As well the pizzas are usually good too. The chips and salsa at $6.50 could have a bit bigger bowl of chips than the small amount provided though, especially since you get a big serving of salsa. It did get a bit chilly on the patio and I did ask the waitress if she could turn on the patio heat lamp beside us, but was told she didn't know how to, thought then she would ask or see if someone else would, but nothing came of it. Lastly, I felt like dessert after my meal but all they have is one dessert, a donut type. Be nice if they have a few more options. read more

This location has great atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food and beverages(the Caesars are to die for) The one thing that was off putting was we were seated near the front by the door in a booth and it was highly uncomfortable having the servers standing right behind us literally a foot away while trying to enjoy a date night. The decor was varied and in a classic pub style. There was also a comfy looking area with leather styled seating. Service was quite attentive and consistent, we weren't left wanting. Our food came quickly was quite good. We had the Westcoast salad and yam fries with truffle mayo and I have no complaints at all, they were nicely done. I came in for drinks for a friend on a Friday night and was greeted with fernandas contagious smile and awesome attitude and my friends and I immediately felt at home. She took our names down took the time to small talk we weren't just a customer. She went above and beyond and served us drinks fairly quick and regardless of it being busy she still checked in on us and even remembered our drinks.
