Wanted to bring my 1.5 Year old somewhere a bit more lowkey than the big wigs in town and also wanted to knock out pumpkins and apple picking at the same time- enter Blackman Homestead Farm. It ticked those boxes and also delicious slushies (apple cider and grape) just a missed opportunity for delicious pastries (hmm cinnamon donuts!) We thank goodness read Darlene's review about making a reservation and did that the day of around noon and was able to get in at 330! The reservation is made online and the farm is FREE to enter (amazing) but can't be changed or cancelled, however you only need it per carload, so unless you're bringing another car, you can tack on extra folks. We purchased some apples we picked (it was pretty low in the season to pick off the trees) and some that were all set for you in bins, a pumpkin, some cider, a tiny pumpkin and were surprised by the price. Gently it was not as expensive as I thought. Parking was quick and easy on a later Saturday afternoon, with a quick Hi to the Turkeys, some exploring around the pumpkins and picking some apples we had a good time after about an hour and half. I did noticed that it was well organized and lots of folks did disregard the signs: don't feed the Turkeys (grass) and pick up the apples you drop off the tree. There were alot of half eaten, throw apples on the ground which made me kind of sad. Please respect someone's rules and property, it's so nice to be able to come see the farm for free, I hope that doesn't change.

Natalie's Tamales (Instagram natalies_tamles). Met her at an Yelp event and fell in love with the tamales and sauces. Having southern roots been hard to find a good tamale, but Natalie has nailed it. The pork and chicken tamales are delicious! Like I said the weather was not the best, but I was still surprised at how many vendors were there. Ranging from fresh sausage, fruits, vegetables, sweets, cheeses and wine and alcohol. I met a chef, Chef Scott Bernard. (Instagram goodneighborflavor) He has a stand with balavka, original and brown sugar cinnamon. They both were tasty, the brown sugar cinnamon was my favorite. He was very friendly. He told me he does catering, and four course private dinners, as well as opening a Bistro in Cheektowaga coming soon. I love going and meeting new vendors. Some vendors have "homegrown" signs, but many don't. What's the point of going to a farmers market and buying out-of-state produce? Some vendors have clear signage with prices, but not everyone - which makes it very time-consuming to ask lots of pricing questions if you shop on a limited budget and stressful if you don't like holding up the line. Many farmers also seem to grow very similar items. I rarely or never see things like okra, peppers other than bells, radicchio, tomatillos, purple carrots, etc. I'd love to see more variety! What do I need to do to get a decent head of radicchio around here? Most vendors only accept cash; some are starting to take Venmo now but only a few seem to accept credit cards. I wouldn't mind this except there is no signage so you have to wait in line and get someone's attention to ask at EVERY stand even before picking out veggies if you don't carry cash. There is an ATM on-site but of course it charges fees. There is very little shade and no areas to sit and rest. The one covered area is always very tightly packed with people and it is hard to walk through; I don't understand how anybody shops at the vendor tables in there. The parking lot is small, very tight, and a challenge to get into and out of - and people frequently just stop vehicles in the middle of the road and block you in. It's easiest to park along the side streets in the neighborhood - but plan ahead and bring a rolling cart to carry stuff back to the car. Finally, the market is technically year-round and happens on multiple days, but be aware that if you go during the off-season or on a Thursday that there are significantly fewer vendors and your selection will be very small. Maybe not even worth the drive depending on where you're coming from. I get it, being a vendor is hard work - I have worked at farmers markets myself - but it's something to be aware of ahead of time to set expectations so you aren't disappointed. Summary: This is one of the most stressful and least rewarding markets I've been to. I go when I want to get a huge quantity of tomatoes or apples, and otherwise avoid this one in favor of the smaller markets that require their farmers to actually grow what they sell.

They gave me the rundown of everything they carry, what's in stock and where sourcing comes from. I will say, they have a great relationship with the Amish and Mennonite Communities so they source many things from them, cheeses, milk, chicken, various freshly milled flour etc. Lots to choose from but the meats move fast so plan with their existing process of butchering, packing and pickup for the choicest cuts. I love this place and will be a long time customer going forward.

I wish I had taken a picture of the steaks we cooked from their store.. soooooo tender and flavorful ( we grilled with just salt and pepper and their butter flavorored olive oil.) Also are them too fast. We moved here to Newfane in April and have already met most of the family that works at the store. Great customer service and I saw smoked gouda in the cheese fridge...next time!
