I donated 14 inches of hair in very good condition to Locks of Love several months ago. I sent it with the form requesting a written acknowledgement stating that they received it. After waiting a few months I called them, and was told they had no record of it, but that when they caught up with all their work, they would send it. I'm still waiting, but not holding my breath. I realize I failed to have it insured, but after reading all the bad reviews, I would never have sent it, and I have reason to believe they are not a very legitimate organization. read more

LOCKS OF LOVE is one of the most deserving non-profit organizations in our country today. They provide real human hair wigs for children who have lost their own hair to illness and medication. I have given hair TWICE to this worthy organization. My daughter's school recently had a contest for an entire school year. I have virgin hair. I know, not surprising, considering what a wholesome image I have. But I was always told that hair dye is for ugly people. Or, rather, people with ugly hair. And I was told that people get highlights so that they have the highlights that I have naturally. In other words, I have a gorgeous head of hair. But I don't get it cut often. And at one point I realized that it was getting pretty long and then decided I would grow it out to donate to Locks of Love. You can donate your non-virgin hair to them too, but they won't use it to make wigs for the children. They WILL, however, sell it to other wig makers and use the proceeds to pay the manufacturing costs. So you're still helping the kids. And after growing it out for a year and having it ridiculously long and annoying, I decided that I would get it cut when I was back east over Christmas. What I didn't decide though was that I would let somebody cut 13 inches off in his kitchen at 3 A.M. after a night of drinking. But I was happy I did it that way - somebody I love dearly did such a monumental thing in a way completely befitting us - drunk at 3 A.M. And then I never got my hair fixed - and I've received tons of compliments on what a wonderful haircut I have. So, that's the secret. You want great hipster hair? I'm all for the charity giving wigs to those in need, regardless of the children's illnesses. What I find disarmingly suspicious is the newer information that's out there about LOL, information that claims the organization throws out much of the hair they receive and sells lots of wigs for profit. _The New York Times_ did a feature on this half a year ago or so. I donated 11 inches of hair to Locks of Love in February of 2005. After cutting my hair, it was a challenge to get used to not having long hair anymore, but it was worth all the trouble. My cousin's daughter was diagnosed with leukemia 5 years ago and whenever I would think about not donating my hair, I kept thinking about how it might feel to be a little girl without hair. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit 1/14/08: After donating my hair so long ago, I found the Long Hair Community and found lots of conflicting information about the Locks of Love organization. Locks of Love receives thousands of ponytails each year and only a handful of wigs are given for free to disadvantaged children. This a GREAT non-profit organization which provides wigs to financially disadvantaged CHILDREN who suffer from long-term hair loss for any medical diagnosis. While they are located in Florida, they accept HAIR and FINANCIAL donations from any location. They are also the most forgiving for those who want to donate their hair. When other organizations have very strict rules on hair donations (i.e., never been colored, permed, all one length, no less than 12-inches long), LOCKS OF LOVE, accepts ANY hair that is NOT chemically damaged and at least 10-inches long. For hair they receive that does not meet the rigorous processing requirements, they sell it to help fund the cost of manufacturing. The cost of a wig at a store can be as much as $3,500.00, and ranges between $1,500.00 - 2,500.00 to make. It also makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to do something like this. read more

Since I am of Italian descent I have been blessed with thick dark somewhat naturally wavy hair. I have always received compliments on it. I had to go to Children's Hospital for one of my kids one time and saw a little girl that was undergoing medical treatment and had lost her hair. She kept eyeing me and finally asked if she could play with my hair. I reached into my purse and pulled out a comb and she began to give me all sorts of interesting styles. It was at that point that I decided I needed to grow out my hair a little longer and donate it. This was a big step for me since I have always had long hair. I looked on-line at Locks of Love to see what the requirements were and went to my stylist and had her place my hair in the ponytail and cut it off. Surprisingly I was very happy thinking that some child could benefit once the initial shock wore off. My stylist gave me a great bob cut which was a new look for me. They have a few requirements: The hair must be 10 inches or longer Has to be in a ponytail or a braid Hair that has been colored or permed is okay. Locks of Love is devoted to provide hair wigs to financially disadvantage children suffered from cancer or other kinds of illnesses that cause hair loss. I did some research after I decided to donate my long locks for a good cause. Locks of Love has a very informative website, easy-to-follow donation guideline (hair donation can be sent by mail), and most importantly giving me the confidence that my hair will be used to help a child in need. I donated a 12-inch ponytail today. It takes a minimum of 6 ponytails like mine to make a shoulder length wig for a little girl. Hello everyone. I want to share my disappointment about Locks of Love with the rest of you. A few months ago I sent 3 separate 10-12 inches long of my all natural hair that I collected. I know it is for a good cause and maybe I am wrong about expecting a little thank you note from Locks of Love, however I think they should have sent me a thank you note. I have healthy, beautiful, thick hair and I was very exited to send all that to Locks of Love.
