As an Indigenous person to this area, I have to give this place 5 stars! First, Jeff the State…read moreRanger, was amazing! He was so culturally appropriate, correct, and sensitive (when need be) so HUGE kudos goes to him making this tour excellent! Second, Fort Mandan is super child friendly; they have a loads of interactive/hands on items to learn from. Third, Fort Mandan have super clean, nice smelling restrooms. Fourth, Fort Mandan has a quaint gift shop with some nice/educational items. Lastly, the replica Fort Mandan is amazing, so historically accurate and beautifully built. I am so impressed with the State of North Dakota for investing in something so educational and Native friendly as this! This place, no doubt, as my Indigenous blessing. You will learn so much about Lewis and Clark as well as the rest of the members of the expedition. I was particularly impressed with the representation of Sakakawea as not a guide, but as an interpreter (and as Native people see her, truly as an ambassador and helper). This place is not open year round, only from like March to October so make sure you make time to see this site!

Great replica of Louis and Clark's winter quarters. There was also a smaller interpretative center…read morebefore you got to the fort which was interesting and had a whole special section for kids. When you arrive, you have to drive through this little frontier village and it was completely deserted when we were there so it was more like a ghost to town. It's a cute little old west themed area with buildings and displays but it was obviously closed when we were there. We had to drive through to the end of it to see the Buffalo. While you can easily view him from the parking area, we walked over to be right underneath him and he is quite big and impressive. It's hard to tell just how large it is from the photos but my husband is 6 ft tall with an impressive wingspan and standing directly underneath with his arms stretched up, he still could not touch it's belly. The singular Rocky mountain oyster protruding from the bottom made us laugh though! There are also displays with images of the building process and history about the monument and I love that they have a phone number you can call if you want to hear the story. We used this function for some of the other stops we made and it's a nice option and would be great for people with kids and the visually impaired. Overall it was just a quick 10-minute stop for a photo op but it was fun enough for us and I imagine when the frontier village is open and there are a lot of people around that it's much more fun with a lot more things to do.
