We made a quick detour to see the world's largest Buffalo monument in Jamestown as it was on theme with many of the other quick roadside attractions that we were stopping at. When you arrive, you have to drive through this little frontier village and it was completely deserted when we were there so it was more like a ghost to town. It's a cute little old west themed area with buildings and displays but it was obviously closed when we were there. We had to drive through to the end of it to see the Buffalo. While you can easily view him from the parking area, we walked over to be right underneath him and he is quite big and impressive. It's hard to tell just how large it is from the photos but my husband is 6 ft tall with an impressive wingspan and standing directly underneath with his arms stretched up, he still could not touch it's belly. The singular Rocky mountain oyster protruding from the bottom made us laugh though! There are also displays with images of the building process and history about the monument and I love that they have a phone number you can call if you want to hear the story. We used this function for some of the other stops we made and it's a nice option and would be great for people with kids and the visually impaired. Overall it was just a quick 10-minute stop for a photo op but it was fun enough for us and I imagine when the frontier village is open and there are a lot of people around that it's much more fun with a lot more things to do. read more

No living buffalo roaming to see today (they must have all been in the barn) but there is indeed the World's Largest Buffalo to see. His name is "Dakota Thunder" and he's huge! If you're patient, you can perhaps get a picture of him without any bystanders. Welcome to the Buffalo City! Unveiled in 1959, he is 26 feet tall and 46 feet long and is made of steel and stucco. It is indeed anatomically correct though real buffalo aren't this large. The buildings that surround the buffalo are authentic though they were moved here in the last few decades to make up the Frontier Village. Interesting gift shops and frontier trinkets and even an ice cream place. There is no charge to visit the World's Largest Buffalo Monument and a small parking lot is at the end of the road. Great tourist stop right off the highway! Hard to miss with all the signs, and either exit will get you there. It is a recommended $5 donation to enter, and is totally worth it. The area is clean and lots of history to entertain the older crowd and hands on experiences for the kiddos (pony rides, and activities) I'm especially impressed by their "Talking Trail" and enchroma binoculars to make the nature and history in their area accessible to visitors! read more

Worth the visit since you can also visit the frontier village and the bison discovery center near by. The living herd was out and only viewable through the binocular stations since they were in a pasture on the other side of the highway. Nice views of the surrounding area. read more

Did you know that in Jamestown, ND, you can find a 26-foot-tall buffalo that is considered the world's largest buffalo monument? It's made with 60 tons of concrete, and bypassing what looked like a sleepy mini town of the old west, you make your way up a path to the large sculpture! I love how it's so random, and it's such a fun roadside attraction to stop by to take some pictures and selfies. There's plenty of parking in the gravel lot before the main path, and you can't miss it with the many signs that lead you to the monument. It's exactly what it says! It was cool. One thing I hadn't realized is that it's one stop in a self guided tour. Using your own phone you can hear information about the Buffalo and other sites in Jamestown. The Buffalo is at the far end of an old-timey frontier village that had buildings preserved from the settlement days. Each building was also a stop on the tour. It was a great place for photos. It's an entertaining stop for families/kids but even if you're an adult or single you'll get a kick out of it! There are apparently other stops on the audio tour in modern Jamestown, but I hadn't budgeted time to explore all of that since I didn't know about it beforehand. Had I realized there was more to Jamestown I would've spent the night or at least blocked out the whole day to see the rest of the sites on the tour. Seeing the Buffalo and the frontier town is free (they do have a box for donations) but there's also a Buffalo Museum that charges admission. I didn't get to tour the Museum. read more

When I knew I would be in North Dakota, the World's Largest Buffalo went on my to do list. Although it was cold and SUPER windy, I think it was worth the stop. It was fun to see and take pictures with and just get out and stretch the legs from driving. Fortunately this stop is right off the highway and was along the route I was travelling. If in the area, I definitely recommend stopping. read more

Great roadside attraction. I accessed the site fairly early in the morning after spotting the billboard along the interstate. The buffalo is very large and a great photo op for all the insta kids. There is also a nice mockup of old west town village that you can explore, also great for photo ops. I did not visit the Buffalo Museum that was on site because I was there before they opened. read more

I didn't go into the museum, but I did check out the World's Largest Buffalo Monument because it's FREE! What more can I say about it - it's a giant buffalo. Take a selfie with it...you can find it at the end of Frontier Village (it's literally hard to miss). There's not much along the way driving through the highway, so might as well make a quick pit stop. read more

This is a fun side of the highway pitstop. We were actually staying in town for the night and saw a brochure which is how we found out about it. There's a whole little village setup with stores and museums. It seemed like it would have been cool, but we were there early in the morning and nothing was open yet. We just drove down to the end, parked, and checked out the statue. It's a huge statue so we obviously got some pictures standing under it. There are a couple parts that are kind of falling off, but it's pretty well maintained. I wouldn't go out of the way to come see this, but if you're driving by, it's worth stopping at. read more

I stopped by here earlier today with my wife and her parents. We were en route from Bismarck to Fargo whenever I noticed the sign for Jamestown. You see the night before I had noticed in a tourism book that Jamestown had the Worlds Largest Buffalo as well as the National Buffalo Museum and so we decided to stop. The sculpture itself is located just through frontier village and is free. It's large and actually overlooks the highway and was as advertised. On the morning we were there, the light was bad for photo taking and would probably be a lot better in the afternoon. Overall though, a positive visit. The bottom line for me is that I would recommend this to anyone who has an extra 15 minutes and is passing by. I would make the drive over from Fargo or Bismarck but did think it was a fun roadside attraction. read more

Not only is the buffalo monument itself super cute (and huge!), but the area around it is very cool - there's the buffalo museum (we didn't go), and more than anything a little street with a bunch of storefronts that look like the olden days, like an old dentist, jail, insurance shop, post office, etc. They are decorated both on the outside and the inside. We went in the morning (9 am ish), and the buffalo's shadow was HUGE upon us. Not sure if it would be better later in the day, but just be prepared to stand in it's shadow if you want to be right in front of it in a photo at that time of day. It's a stop you can do quickly, so you might as well go if you're in the area! read more

It was recommended that I detour as I drove from Bismarck to Fargo. Frankly, it just wasn't worth it. I arrived when the little "town" was closed (not sure whether it was COVID-19 or after-hours), so there was nothing much to see. It was a fine 10-minute stop, but I'd suggest skipping it unless you've got little ones who would find it impressive.
