Christmas Day dinner in Beaune - not many restaurants were open in Christmas Day, but Loiseau des Vignes was a ray of light that shined bright tonight. All dishes were executed well. Foie gras was well prepared. Chicken for this Christmas Dinner menu was prepared 2 ways, with thigh meat and breast. Second dish, the cauliflower in a pastry with assorted seafood was fresh and light. Another highlight was the 60+ wine by the glass program, with different village wine, premiere cru and grand cru at various price points by the half glass or full glass. Seriously there is something for everyone. We started with a premiere cru Chablis, followed by a side by side Pommard, a Beaune premiere cru. Read a review that they were surprised that wine by the glass in "Europa" should not be more than a few euro a glass. In all honesty you are in Beaune in the center of Burgundy trying the world glass premiere cru / grand cru small producer wine. Worth every penny. read more

I understand that people can have a bad experience at ANY restaurant but one of the nice things about the Michelin Guide is that I have found they are always right about the quality of the restaurant. This one-star Michelin was no exception. I have reviewed a number of restaurants in France and have forgotten to review many more and a general comment I can make is if you try to say a couple words in French, the place typically warms up to you immediately. If you apologize that you don't know French, it becomes usually perfectly acceptable. We dined here and had the tasting menu. Not only were all of the courses absolutely wonderful, they were also beautiful in presentation and also rather modern in their flavors. It was clear that the chef incorporated a Mediterranean influence. When he came out to say hello to the tables and I saw his not-lily whiteness, I noted the Mediterranean influence and he said it comes from his birthplace of Marseilles. The savory courses were sublime and the cheese cart had a huge selection, and we could take as many as we wanted. The only detraction from the whole meal and it's a minor nitpick is that the pastry chef is uninspired. A well-executed flourless cake was the finale, but it lacked presentation or flair and it was well, just too big. The wines we had were the premium pairing and they represented some of the best of Burgundy, including a Rousseau. A wonderful evening, great service, great everything. read more

Why search out haute cuisine? The cooking, of course, but equally if not more important, the sense that one is welcome in the establishment. From the moment my partner and I arrived, we were treated as though we were intruders. Initially ignored, and then made to feel that we were unwelcome. For way too long, no one arrived at our table. When the hostess finally did, there was a total absence of a welcoming attitude. While the food was perfectly good, the wait times for everything were unacceptable--we poured our own wine throughout the meal; when we finished we had to get up from the table to ask that the plates be cleared. The waiter engaged in long conversations with the people sitting next to us, standing between their table and ours, with his back to us while we were eating. For a restaurant that holds itself out as haute cuisine, it was sorely lacking. A truly unpleasant experience, accompanied by good food. read more

This is a really amazing restaurant in Beaune. The food is a bit on the modern side so be ready for an adventure. I truly am impressed with how professional the service was, how delicious everything was and don't let me graze over the wine program... One of the best I have seen. They have an Enomatic (airtight) wine dispensing system with one of the best burgundy wine by the glass programs I have ever seen. I opted to pinch pennies and skip the 91' Corton Charlemagne they had but instead went for an o2 Puligny Montrachet thats was amazing. The wines that they had represented a huge spread of producers from their top bottlings. Mayber 35 wines by the glass in half and full options. Food was marvelous. This is modern french with such class. Interesting presentations, including the classics (table side duck carve anyone), perfectly executed dishes, great match of flavors... Not Worth It... Our trip planner booked this for us but I can tell you to skip it. It was probably the worst meal and experience I have ever had. Upon walking in the lighting and decor is off. Lighting is too much - almost seemed like daylight, -- half of the restaurant is modern the rest is old world - kind of off,, Food - we were almost looked down on by not ordering 5 courses - we had a large lunch ( thank god ) and because of that we didn't order everything I think they were expecting. -- we ordered starters and desert - My wife didn't even touch hers ( Chicken ) I thought mine was ok - Seafood dish - but overall had a much better lunch. Wine - ok selection but they don't spend the time to cover it - especially if you don't speak French -- The Couple next to us loved to look over and talk about us not knowing we understood what they were saying about us. the staff didnt pay attention much to us nor did they ask how things were even after my wife left most of her dish untouched. The overall worst part of the meal happened when it came time to pay. I had asked for the check and waited for almost an hour to get it - then upon receiving it I didnt even hesitate and put my card down showing it to the staff.... almost 25 mins of waiting with no wine or water i walked up to the front like it was Denny's or IHOP with my bill and stood there waiting to pay. This restaurant can be the best in the old town of Beaune. In spite of the many settings appropriate for the modern couples such as variety of good wines available for the services by the glass, It is also quite family friendly. The list of bottles of wines are not so long, but well- considered and its prices are reasonable for the value of the bottles. The cheapest Bourgogne red is simple Bourgogne Rouge of 40 Euros, but it is of wonderful quality. There are some interesting bottles worth trying even with consideration of the prices for the value, such as Clos de Vougeot by Meo Camuzet and vieilles vignes of Vosne Romanee around 150 Euros. You can also rely on the service of 5 glasses suggested for the food. The dinner course is available from 59 euros. The food is totally different from Asian oriented recent French food, and matches Bourgogne red wines perfectly. List of the a la carte courses gives us the impression of limited choices, but each plate is totally satisfactory. The cheese service is also very impressive with it variety. Then I think that you can also enjoy an excellent dinner with the food, looking like classic French food, but not excessively heavy to our stomach, together with a good selection of wines, either by your own choice or relying on the suggestions at this old wine capital. read more

Very mediocre "fancy" food here. They must have won their star with something other than the food and the atmosphere. Ambiance was stiff and formal. Appetizer was interesting enough. Salad with flowers you can eat. The special "Bresse" chicken was just chicken. The mashed potato on the side was pretty good. Way over-priced. Go to any of the bistros down the street for better and cheaper food. If you want the Michelin-Star experience, go to Le Benaton, where the food actually tastes good. read more

They paired our wines beautifully with our al la carte menu. If we could eat there everyday, we would. Amazing is all I can say. If you have a chance to eat here, do yourself a favor and do it. The food here is a trip, deconstructed interpretations of classic fair. We ordered the tasting menu, the highlight of which was their interpretation of the seafood caprese salad, complete with a mozzarella baloon. I assume they take a soft ball of mozzarella, stick a straw in it and blow. I hope the chef had brushed his teeth. Another notable portion of the meal was the cheese plate. Never mind the fly landing on the wedge of bleau, just pick as many slices as you like. I chose so many that I got a case of "le cheese sweats." One of the good reasons to go here is the wine by the glass selection. Over 60 of burgundy's best are by the glass. Nice. All in all, the dishes just seemed like the chef was trying just a bit to hard to create art rather than something that tastes great. We were in Beaune for some posh people's 3day wedding, with Michelin star chefs flown in fr london & Paris, yet Loiseau still beat every other meal hands down: the duck was amazing. If you in the area this is a must-go vacation treat. It is fairly expensive but is a real experience and an exceptional meal. The restaurant itself is surprisingly casual and filled with groups having long meals. Do not go in expecting in and out service - but a three hour dinner is all part of the experience. Here you can really experience high end, "fancy" french cooking. Make sure to get the more traditional french tasting menu not the more modern, fusion-type one. Also the full wine paring is exceptional and really worth getting. It is a great way to taste a range of what the Burgundy region has to offer while eating delicious food. This menu really displays old school, fussy-yet-delicious, impeccably cooked french cuisine. Additionally we had a gooseberry soufflé that was off the charts and the pastries at the end were incredible. This was honestly one of the best meals I have ever had. The only negative was the service got off to a slow start. The waitstaff was visibly at odds with each other and seemed to be having an awkward stand-off over who would take what table. Once it got going it was fine but we waited a very long time between being seated and the beginning of our meal without any wine, bread etc... read more

Our party of 4 stumbled into this swanky restaurant in Beaune hoping for simple fare to accompany the large collection of wines they serve by the glass.So when we opened the menu, we started to feel annoyed and irritable - it looked like just another very expensive French restaurant, and we didn't see much of anything we were excited to have. We decided to cut our losses and order as little as possible... Then the food started to arrive. Our eyes began to pop as we realized how unique and delicious everything was. It started with a lentil soup "cappuccino" - sounds weird, but I could have feasted on that alone! The snail appetizer we shared was superb, and we each raved about our entrees, which featured a creative combination of ingredients that - most important - tasted divine! The prize at desert went to the grand marnier soufflé, where the waiter flamed the grand marnier, slit the soufflé and poured it in the center, causing the soufflé to rise to even fluffier heights! While we were the first people to arrive at this restaurant, it was packed by the time we left, and now we know why. I highly recommend a special trip to Loiseau des Vignes if you are fortunate enough to visit Beaune. read more
