I was given an outdated manual that does not teach children correctly and none of the materials that should go along with curriculum. It would ask me to take out certain math materials for a lesson and when I asked where I could get these materials, my supervisor said "oh we don't have those, just make your own." The admin is a complete mess and does not help teachers. When I started out along with three other first year teachers, multiple teachers who had been there for years say they hate the school and want to leave but cannot find another job. Never mind that the school is rooted in Scientology. The curriculum was written by the same person that created Scientology. When you ask them if they are affiliated with Scientology they will say no. However, in the front lobby of the school they have "The Way to Happiness" books for anyone to take. Books written by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. I decided to leave the school when I saw their "reading" program. They do not teach children to read they teach them to memorize. This old practice of memorizing words has been debunked as the correct way to teach reading. Phonics is scientifically proven to be the best way to teach children how to read. They did not teach phonics and when I asked about it they told me they do not teach that because they do not believe in it. By using this strategy of memorization is harms students and creates bad habits that will be hard to break in the future. I had a parent during a conference tell me they want their child to learn phonics and they do not believe this is the right way to learning how to read and I had to lie to them and tell them this was correct because I was being monitored by admin during my conferences. I also had to lie to a parent and tell them their child was doing well when they couldn't write their name. Please I beg you not to put your child in this school. I know the class sizes are very tempting and they will woo you in so many ways, but it's a trap. They will not teach your child. Many of the teachers there are not certified, which even though it is legal, they will not get the instruction they need to be successful. If you don't believe me listen to the podcast "sold a story" about the problem we have.

If you're going to send your kiddo there though, I'd just recommend doing a few surprise visits like mid-morning and mid-afternoon (which you have every legal and moral right to do!) to make sure things are going the way you'd like. You can also always call the public agency (start with the Department of Early Education and Care and they'll connect you with the correct district manager) that does unannounced inspections and make sure there haven't been any seriously concerning violates. I did this with a few daycares and the folks who provided the info over the phone to me were very kind--not a painful experience at all!

Like most daycare's there is a turnover in staff whether it is the teachers or the directors. We lucked out however and pretty much had teachers that were there long term and were very highly regarded. These teachers became a second mom to my child - they taught her things I never would have dreamed about teaching my child had she been in a home setting. I give them full credit for potty training my child at 25 months. We have had the teachers in my home and they've been invited to birthday parties. A few teachers even took the time to visit my child when she was in Children's Hospital for a week (after they finished their day). No daycare is perfect, don't let them tell you any different. The director we had prior to leaving was Meghan who was wonderful (probably my favorite out of all of them - I think she might have been # 4 over the course of our time there). No matter what daycare you look into or reviews you read there will always be a few with 1 star. Don't let that deter you from visiting this center and checking it out. We all parent differently and have different expectations on what we need or want for our children. My child was loved in this school for a long time - it was a sad day when we left to progress to Kindergarten. I credit the fact that my child is thriving in Kindergarten to her experience at Little Sprouts. Also - give your child time to adjust to a new setting. Children can't and won't adapt overnight. My child cried frequently at drop off for years (master manipulator) I was no sooner in my car driving to work in the mornings and I would get a text from the teacher with a pic of my child smiling. At the end of the day she didn't want to leave! We were at the school alongside many of the same families over the years. NOT SAFE FOR TODDLERS During the tour in May of 2023,…read moreeverything seemed calm and put together. I witness the toddlers quietly enjoying a snack and they all seemed fairly happy. During the registration process, the director was very slow to respond. A week before our son's first day, I still didn't know who his teachers would be, what he should bring to school (lunch, snacks, bedding, lovey), or which classroom he would be in. This was all very unsettling. When I walked in on his second day, it was complete chaos in the front area. Pre-k children were running all over the place playing while the toddlers (some as young as just 15 mo) were mixed in with Pre-K and looked completely scared. Come to find out that it is illegal to mix those groups together or at the very least, you need a special license. By the third day, I still wasn't told who my son's teachers were so I opted to pick him up early. I was horrified to see that a pre-k teacher (who didn't know my son or my son's name) had given him a twizzler as a snack and was sitting in front of a tv screen watching Finding Nemo. My son was only 17 mo old at the time. Candy is considered a choking hazard and we don't allow screens for him at all. No one asked our permission for him to watch the movie and no one knew of his dietary restrictions because no one had introduced me to his teachers. Not to mention the fact that this goes against all the marketing materials that you're given. The place is a hot mess. The marketing materials that they give you are a complete lie. The turn over for the toddler rooms is higher than average and from what I witness, it's NOT SAFE. The director is extremely disorganized, doesn't know what her teachers do on a day to day basis and provides little to no communication with parents. Needless to say, WE REMOVED OUR SON FROM THEIR CARE AFTER THE THIRD DAY. Of course I reached out to the 1800 number and explained my story. Again, I was given false promises. I was told: -That I could enroll my son at a different location, at the same price as Knoweldge Beginnings, Westwood. That never happend. -I was told that I would be speaking to the district VP about how Knowledge Beginnings was being run. That never happened. Essentially, all promises made to me over the phone by the district manager were never upheld. That pales in comparison to how little Knowledge Beginnings cares for their toddlers and doesn't not offer the care that is described in their marketing materials. From one concerned parent to another, do not take your children there.

Our girls have thrived in that environment, much due to the nurturing staff and just the right balance of academic focus and self-directed play. Our eldest child is quite prepared for kindergarten at this point but still has another year before she starts in public school! The staff is quite experienced, many of them having worked at the center for 5+ years and who also bring their own children to the location. Maryellen and Stacey, the Director and Associate Director respectively, are attentive to the needs of the children and their families while continuously guiding the staff toward excellence; recently demonstrated through achieving National accreditation. Some perceived drawbacks to this center might be: the location - Rt 1 can be quite busy and the parking lot is not huge, but the location was quite convenient for us and we've rarely had a problem with parking. Snacks are provided but lunches are not included in the cost of tuition- this suits our picky eaters! And the center has recently partnered with a company called Smart Lunches to provide meals for purchase. We absolutely recommend this center to families seeking a caring place where their children will blossom and grow.

The classrooms are bright, open, and calming with quality materials used for play and lessons. The many "stations" curated and rotated by the teachers ensure children can feel comfortable choosing between their favorite activities or trying new ones. The kids are exposed to many themes and subjects. The focus on education is on building blocks for kindergarten. Kids are exposed to math and reading in a way that cultivated their curiosity. Weather, calendars, arts, nature, you name it! It's amazing how much is picked into the year. Our sons pride in his handwriting and creative creations was clear each day as we were welcomed into the classroom to review his work at pickup time. The school's emphasis on safe exploration of the city was another draw. We wanted our son to become a citizen of the city. A safe street crosser who observes and learns from his surroundings. Hearing from our son about the classes prep for their walks and then their adventures and lessons around the city was great. Finally, the staff and teachers were fantastic. The care and attentiveness they brought to the school daily was always top notch. They were always available to chat about a rough morning departure for school or other issue. Their ability to handle occasional hijinks was also impressive with the children quickly learning proper etiquette and behavior. Director of Old South, Carolyn, was very helpful coaching us young parents through some behavior challenges and through the kindergarten admissions process. Old South Preschool was recommended to us by friends, and being members of the church (the school is non-religious), our son was already familiar with the building. We decided it was worth the longer commute to have him in school somewhere we were all familiar with. We had no idea what an incredible year he would have. The staff took COVID precautions very seriously, and the school was open all year. Even with all of the extra safety measures, our son felt safe, cared for, and looked forward to school each day. The teachers--many who have taught there for over a decade--are masters at what they do (I am also an early childhood educator and was continuously amazed by their ability to relate to and motivate each child). Our son left Old South more confident, independent, and definitely ready for kindergarten. Old South Preschool was such a bright spot in this very bleak year. We are so grateful to Old South and could not recommend it enough.
