I have been terrified of the dentist for some time. Kind of like the car dealership, you have a go-between who talks billing and insurance with you away from the nurse and dentist. It's discrete and comfortable without pressure. My nurse (dental hygienist) was Susan? Or Sandy? God she was an angel. She was so kind to me breaking down and upset and in pain. She made me feel so comfortable talking about stuff and offering anything I might need. My dentist was Dr Taylor who was incredibly knowledgeable and proficient. I got out what needed to come out and I even scheduled an appointment for regular maintenance later this month. I was made comfortable to be there, whether I needed nitrous or a valium, either are available. And they make sure you are physically comfortable with numbing. Mentally comfortable is hard, but true kindness shines through in the folks who work there. I got a kids "reward" (shark plushie) to hold while I had my procedure. When I left I got a "goodie bag" with full instructions on what I had done, extra gauze, and an emergency card. It's a little hinky getting in with the road construction on witchduck road. But soon as your turn on Grayson, by the church, it's there. There's an employee entrance on the witchduck side and another saying Ste 200 on the side, even though the dentist is Ste 100, this is the door you go in.

I am very familiar with text/ email reminders, or confirmations of medical appointments, but I have never experienced a policy like this one that literally cancels your appointment two days before. What if people are working or traveling and don't get the message until after 3pm? Also, maybe this was in the fine print, but I was never informed of such a ridiculous policy. I also don't appreciate the limited hours of operation. Maybe it works for a stay at home house wife, but for anyone running a business, or working long hours it's just not convenient, or practical. Another issue is that they require you to pay up front for services, and then you have to wait for your insurance to reimburse you. Another inconvenience. Finally, they have made a lot of investments in new technologies, such as the sonic cleaner and they require/ prefer for you to use the uncomfortable devices, even when you request hand scaling. At my last cleaning I asked the hygienist if she could just do hand scaling because the sonic device is uncomfortable and causes more TMJ pain. Her response was, "why don't we compromise and do half and half." It made me feel pressured to concede, and likely she is being pressured/ encouraged to use this device on patients. I'm sure Coastal Cosmetic Dentistry has plenty of business, and lots of 5 star reviews, but it's hard to imagine that I'm the only patient that's been put out by the items mentioned above. You might want to at least give your patients a heads up that you require a response two days before your scheduled appointment to keep the appointment.

This last 4 years of going here has been a nightmare . My temporary work was very badly done, the cheap temporary caps were so flimsy, the amount of cracks, and chips on temporary material exposing the real tooth. I've seen this man on several occasions and he never not once tried to fix it . I paid a lot of money for this unprofessional low budget work. I am beyond unsatisfied and disappointed. I used to love coming to the dentist (we all have our quirks, people!), until I had a bad experience at our prior dentist. I decided to give Smile By Design a go, and I love it (although I can't say I LOVE getting dental work done- I'm now a normal person that dreads the dentist). I've had filling removal & re-fills done, and I expressed my fear & anxiety to Dr. Santos, and she was so calm and patient with me during the entire procedure. That first experience I had with her made me feel totally comfortable and I trust her completely with my teeth. I think they do offer a lot of options, and some people are put off by that, but I'm gonna tell you- I bought that expensive Bluetooth toothbrush they offered me, and while the Bluetooth part is whatever (IMHO), my teeth have never felt better and my hygienist notices a difference in my teeth (which I totally believe!). My teeth feel like I just got a cleaning every single time I brush with it (which is nightly). Dr. Santos also suggested I get a soft night guard, and while my insurance doesn't cover that, I saved my pennies and got fitted for it. In summary, I do feel as though this dentistry has my teeth in their best interest, and I would recommend anyone going here! If you've had bad experiences at the dentist, be honest with them about it and I think they'll baby you like they baby me. We need it!

The front desk staff was welcoming right away and even thanked me for completing my forms ahead of time, which was a nice touch. The dental assistant who took my X-rays (I'm assuming that's what it's called) came out to get me and was super kind and easy to talk to. She explained everything as we went and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. After the imaging, Dr. Hernandez came in and went over everything they found. I honestly don't remember ever having a dentist be that thorough. He took his time, explained things clearly, and made sure I understood what was going on and had all my questions answered. This was just the first visit--they'll do the cleaning and anything else at a follow-up--but overall, everyone there was wonderful. It's hard for me to even say this, but I'm actually looking forward to going back. I told my youngest son and his wife (who are local and looking for a dentist), and they are eager to be seen by Dr. Hernandez and his staff!

I have several dental issues that need attention, including a crown adjustment. During the discussion, I was informed that the dentist would charge me the full amount for adjusting my crown, as if it were a new one. I was told the dentist would need to remove my crown. You do not need to remove a crown to do an adjustment. A new crown is 1,500- 2,000 dollars so that amount for an adjustment is outrageous!!! They highly recommended that I visit the dentist who had placed the crown on me. This was the first time I had ever heard such a recommendation. I believe that whoever scheduled the appointments should have informed me or the office well in advance, at least more than two days before the appointment.

Everyone seemed happy to be there, like they actually liked their jobs. And Dr. Horwitz was the BEST! He has the greatest bed side manner I've ever experienced. The whole time he was very pleasant and joked around. He made me feel at ease, which is nice when you're about to go under the drill. He was also very quick - 5 cavities in around an hour, when my old dentist would have done 4 cavities in 2 hours. I'll definitely be coming back if I can. I came here and it was like going to my small home-town dentist office where they knew my name, my parents, and remembered a lot of details about my life at every visit. It is located near the beachfront right off the interstate and near the Virginia Beach Convention Center. It has ample parking in the attached lot though it is a smaller parking lot with about 8 or so spaces - it never seems to be so over crowded that I can't find any parking... it has been close once or twice though... The inside is very very clean with new equipment and cute beach-y furniture and wall decor - surf boards and seashells and such. They sell Sonicare toothbrushes and products and do oral surgeries and tooth whitening here. I have never needed more than a very minor filling that did not require numbing and the doctor (Dr. Heffelfinger mentioned below) has an excellent bedside manner who decided to not numb me and we went very slowly to see if I even needed it for such a superficial filling. It turned out I didn't so he spared me the stress and pain of that for which I greatly appreciated it. Means I didn't drool on myself all night needlessly. Plus he personally called the next day to check on me - something I believe they do with all patients who had a procedure done and which is a real personal touch that you don't find most places anymore. I've had a few hygienists since coming here over the last two years but my favorite was only there temporarily and left - my current - Kimberly - is very nice and works with me because I am a bleeder with sensitive gums and A LOT of plaque build-up every time no matter how much I floss or how expensive my toothbrush is.... she seems to go out of her way not to hurt me and to try to minimize the dreadful experience. Which is nice. She also asks about my life and makes an effort to remember the details. My dentist - Dr. Heffelfinger is a very nice younger doctor with a friendly and funny personality - who happens to have gone to JMU - my alma mater - which makes us instant best friends and means he is automatically a great American to me.... plus he's pretty damn cute so it could be much worse. I still don't really enjoy coming to the dentist - but it's much better than ANY previous experiences I've had and especially in the Virginia Beach area. if you are looking for the small-town dentist feel where they remember your name and some family details every time you go in and don't farm you in and out like cattle, come here. You won't regret it.
