The stairs are narrow and steep. You do get to stop mid way to see the view before heading to the top and seeing the panoramic view of the city. You do go down the way you came up. The tickets for the tower are for specific times. The church was beautiful! When you walk in you're greeted with an amazing view of stain glass and art details across the entire building. Definitely a place worth exploring.

It's an Anglican cathedral. The first record of a church on the site dates to 627, but the bulk of the building was constructed between 1220 and 1472.The minster retains most of its medieval stained glass, a significant survival among European churches. The Minster stands tall at a max. tower height of 235 feet (72 m) and is visible from far away. Good if you get lost...just look out for the Minster. And it is a really impressive piece of history, art and architecture. Really amazes you when you first walk up to it. There are so many details to find, to explore. To think how long it's been standing here - surviving quite the fire in 1984. We didn't go in this time around, but that's surely something for another visit. Not sure it's always as windy as it was when we've visited (August), but boy....did it almost blow us away at Precentors Court on the west side of the Minster. So, hold on your hats! Definitely a must do - probably THE must-do when in York.

Ah, Northern Rail... over the years the franchise has changed hands, again and again, it seems no…read morematter who runs the franchise the main problem is the infrastructure, currently, they are operated by the government as "operator of last resort" after Arriva lost the franchise in March 2020. I have noticed a huge improvement from Northern of late, it went from being an operator I'd try my best to avoid, to one I'm willing to accept travelling with. The main highlights of Northern are the staff, the staff on the trains and at their own run stations seem really friendly and happy to help most of the time, and it's much harder to find a staff member that doesn't seem to care in Northern uniform than many other train companies. Many of their routes are slower, as they are forced to stop at many smaller stations along the way which Avanti/Cross Country and co would simply zoom past. The new trains are much more comfortable, while they still are average and can't compare to new trains from TPExpress for example, it's still a huge and much-welcomed step up from the recently withdrawn Pacer trains, which still give me nightmares, it's such an embarrassment they used them for so long... a type of train which is banned in Iran. While Northern wouldn't be my first choice to travel with, they still are improving as much as they can, services seem to be running closer to the actual schedule (I do notice they've added a few minutes onto the stops, so on recent journeys the train is always waiting for a couple of minutes, perhaps to avoid delay complaints). 3*

It also means good old Mel can be tempted to a cheeky glass of fizz or two after a tiring day shopping and getting my hair done. Perfect. Northern rail provide some of the trains into the station and have done since taking over from Arriva Trains Northern in 2004. Lots has been said of failing targets and decline in service standard across the rail network and you only have to listen to regular users to hear plenty of moans and groans. However, I must admit I've not actually found too many problems with my local service. Granted, weekend engineering work and too many leafs on the track make me want to pull my hair out, but in terms of general day to day running you'll find a more than reasonable standard. We've not got the most modern fleet in the country. In fact I'd say we look positively second rate in comparison to other parts of the country, but they are relatively clean, comfy and more importantly do the job you want. Get you from a to b. Do check if the artic weather comes in and as I said earlier, you'll get some disruption at times on Bank Holidays and weekends but if you check you should be well away. It also won't cost you an arm and a leg and is pretty reasonable on your pocket.

Prime location for walking the city walls, the Shambles, and more. Our room was tiny but there was room to prop suitcases on the desk and luggage rack. The bathroom was nice and modern and a good size in comparison to the room. Breakfast was included and I enjoyed coffee, yogurt and fruit. Some of the items on the breakfast line weren't available such as the breakfast lemon cake. Our only problem was that there was no hot water for showering in the morning!! Apparently there was a power outage in the middle of the night and hot water was not restored yet. When we checked out in the morning they were very nonchalant about it and didn't even really apologize for the inconvenience. They just stated the fact that it was out. It was definitely disappointing to not be able to start our day with a hot shower.

From Micklegate bar you will then lead onto Victoria bar one way or Lendal bridge the other way, also look out for the Tansy beetle mural and not far from here is the railway station.

We had breakfast at the Rise twice, very good, and dinner once, which was good though only as one server was working our side of the busy dining room, it was slow. We stayed in the modern wing in a family room which was spacious and lovely. In terms of negatives, the mattress was hard and lumpy, and there was the only one small hook to hang towels and robes, so not much room for our party of three. I mention this because the Grand has a sustainability focus and encourages guests to re-use towels, which we did: more hooks are needed. The reading lamps on the headboard did not work. The major problem we had was the temperature of our room: the thermostat read 16 but it was more like 20; too warm for sleeping. I called down to reception and concierge and there was no answer - multiple times - I think perhaps the phones were malfunctioning. I reached an operator who said she'd leave a note as she was leaving in five minutes. I went down to the front desk and the staff member told me she could adjust it from a control panel in the lobby (?), however, the room stayed too warm. This definitely took away from the experience as I didn't sleep well and expected better from a five star hotel. Lastly, and this is small, but the greenery out front (topiaries and flowers) and in the hallways are plastic, again, not five star. For a hotel focused on sustainability, natural plants would be much more suitable.
