I have been training here since August of 2018, having trained at another local BJJ gym for 2 1/2…read moreyears. There is a lot to love about Scott Phillips' gym: 1. Space Huge mat space. Even with 30+ students in a class, there is still plenty of room to roll 2. Coaches The coaches have all trained under members of the Gracie family. Scott earned his black belt from a Gracie. There are always plenty of coaches and upper-belts on hand. Classes are never cancelled due to a coach being sick, on vacation, at a tournament, etc. 3. Tuition Everyone pays the same. No secret deals, no "because you're you" rates, no bait-and-switch offers. 4. Honest coaches. 5. Have kids? Our head coach is a youth pastor. He's GREAT with kids of all ages. 6. There are 12 adult classes a week to choose from. Muay Thai is available with the unlimited package, not an extra membership.

She was not welcoming at all- no introduction just hands my son his uniform with not even a smile. The instructors were helpful during the session- however being that it was his first time we came unprepared without any water. I went to buy a bottle of water for my son only for the owner to place it on the mat and assume that my son is a mind reader (he's in the middle of his session and is unaware). They get a break and the owner does not even tell him I brought in his water- I had to go and tell her and she still did not tell him he had water to drink. DO NOT bring your kids here- they can care less about your child if they can't even do something as simple as pointing to a bottle of water. This session was only $20 but I wouldn't even pay $0.20 to come again. No thanks I'd rather give my business to someone who would actually care about my kid.

Master Hornbuckle is one of the top black belts around and employs other great black belts. The place is kept clean and organized, something that is needed with so many littles running through. Check their web site. All of the staff are great with children. The instructors are extremely patient with all the kids. Great energy great environment. I can't say enough good thing about this place and the people. After just a few weeks of going, we were seeing a change in attention span and respect from my kids. The kids love to go and look forward to it. As long as the kids enjoy it we will continue to go. Just in the short time we are going the kids have participated in 3 tournaments and their 4th one in a few weeks. (tournaments are on mandatory but a fun part) I must mention the Parents night out, I love this and so do the kids. Periodically they have Parents night out. NTA is focused on traditional, Iwama-style Aikido for both kids and adults…read more NTA has regular adult classes Tuesday through Friday in the evening with additional noon classes on both Tuesday and Thursday. The noon classes are typically very small (2-3 students) and are therefore great opportunities for training and one-on-one time with the Dojo-cho/Sensei Russell Alvey. As Iwama Aikido also features weapons training in the form of a wooden sword (bokken) and a wooden staff (jo), adults have the option of attending a weapons specific class on Saturdays. Russ Sensei is very passionate and strives to deliver traditional, Japanese-style of training. The facilities (dojo) is also very traditional in its design, operation and the lack of air-conditioning. The dojo does have hydronic heating for the winters and I have trained during both the heat of the summers and the cold of the winters and it is no where near as bad as it sounds. It is actually invigorating during the winter and cleansing during the summer. Just remember to hydrate :) I believe NTA is the best option for Iwama Aikido in Texas today. If you are interested in "real" Aikido, I would highly suggest a visit.
