I completed two intake appointments with Long Island Consultation Center (LICC) social workers before deciding not to go any further. As far as I am concerned, the appointments went terribly. The first social worker, David Goldberg, wrote down things that I did not say, including that I had a sister with whom I previously attended therapy. I have been an only child my entire life. I subsequently corrected him as he orally told me that he was writing that I was in therapy with my sister, and my "sister" still was included in my intake paperwork (the history of treatment section) when I received my records a few weeks later. I argue that this shows bad listening and inaccurate documenting skills, which are two red flags for me. Not coincidentally, I found other false things in my record, like how I had a "clean" appearance and "normal" eye contact, which Mr. Goldberg assessed during our appointment. Our appointment was held by telephone call. He asked me about neither of these things during our appointment, so he was neither documenting my self-assessment nor was he writing down his assessment of me. Thus appeared red flag number three. The next session I met with Ms. Dawnann McDowell. Ms. McDowell was similarly problematic. She claimed that I "refused to give out a lot of information" because I declined to answer two of her questions, both of them about my healthcare providers. Thereabouts came red flag number four for me: denying you two answers is not "a lot" of refusals. Not to be outdone by her colleague's visual assessment of me over the phone, Ms. McDowell decided to write that I changed gender pronouns in the course of one sentence: "Client completed her second intake to begin therapy to address his depression." I am not gender fluid nor have I ever been unclear about my gender identity or pronouns. I am a cis-gender female. Though I admit I'm unclear why Ms. McDowell changed my genders in the middle of the sentence, anything from lazy copy-and-pasting to outright inconsideration is a red flag for me. Needless to say, I have no intent to continue at LICC at this time. Because their first and second impression throws up multiple red flags, it seems unlikely that interacting with them for more time is going to result in a different outcome. Thus, I think it is unreasonable for me to give them a third chance. I have also reported the issues I had with false documentation to the Office of Mental Health, and am awaiting further communication about the issue. read more

I wasted two and a half years of my life seeking help from this place. I had the same therapist a previous reviewer described as someone who "truly goes above and beyond to advocate for his patients" and someone "who really works with you to solve the root of your issues." Maybe they have two people with the same name working there, because the guy I saw gave me bad advice, referring me to NYC Social Services for help with one particular issue (and they didn't help me at all), and as far as "really work[ing] with [me] to solve the root of [my] issues" - I told him at my very first session what I wanted to work on, but nothing ever changed. And as far as "go[ing] above and beyond to advocate for his patients," my experience with him was that he had to get approval for a lot of things from his supervisor. Which leads me to the first psychiatrist I was assigned, Dr. Tandon. One day I had to wait 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment time to see Dr. Tandon, and when I saw her that visit only lasted 5 (five) minutes! I know medication monitoring sessions aren't as long as "conventional" therapy sessions, but still! Another time I had to wait 55 minutes. Neither time did Dr. Tandon apologize for the wait. Here's where the "go[ing] above and beyond to advocate for his patients" lie comes in. I finally told my therapist that I did NOT, under any circumstances, want to see Dr. Tandon again. He told me that his supervisor said I had to have one final session with her. I did NOT want to do this, but he said I had no say in the matter. So I had that last session with Dr. Tandon (a phone session due to the pandemic). For those who are not familiar with the protocol of phone sessions, they call you, and in this case I waited over an hour after the scheduled time for her call. During the conversation she got my last name wrong, had the wrong location for my pharmacy and mentioned other medications that she had not previously prescribed for me. She ended the session by abruptly hanging up the phone without saying goodbye. The new psychiatrist I was assigned to, Dr. Haroon, has gotten some bad marks from other reviewers here on Yelp, and while my experience with her wasn't as bad as others' were, she wasn't any prize either. All of our sessions (again, phone sessions due to the pandemic) were very short, she just asked me basic questions like am I working (employed)?, how's my sleeping?, and do you want a prescription refill?. I don't know if she ever read any of my therapist's notes about me or even made an attempt. Five of our sessions lasted less than two minutes, and one didn't even break the minute mark. So, after going to this place for two and a half years, I'm still the same person I was when I started. No improvements. Two and a half years of my life wasted. Based on my experience, I definitely do NOT recommend Long Island Consultation Center. read more

This review is solely focused on Dr. Haroon. My therapist and front desk folks are lovely. Dr. Haroon doesn't see patients in person, and works from home. She also doesn't do *video* telehealth. I've had all of two appointments with her and both have been unacceptable. The second one she was OVER 30 minutes late. And the office can't contact her quickly because she works from home so the front desk people can't even do anything to help (not their fault in the slightest). After 30+ minutes of waiting she calls me from a *restricted* number. Mispronounces my name and proceeds to ask me 'are you taking any medication?' (On the second appt no less) I tell her what I'm taking and she sends it to the pharmacy. She's clearly in a hurry and tries to say goodbye right then but I ask a question and she just tells me 'the pharmacy will let you know' and says goodbye and hangs up. The phone call was no longer than 30 seconds. Don't ever see this doctor. She's incompetent, has awful bedside manor and runs extremely late, and can't even show her face to her patients. And if she's late the office she works for can't even reach her. read more

I have been through a harrowing experience at the Long Island Consultation Center. I had been a client/patient there for many years. I was in both group and individual therapy. I've had several therapists there, some very good and some quite lousy. (Why should there be any bad therapists at a clinic and why aren't they held accountable? ) My latest therapist was a smart , warm sensitive lady and seemlingly very able . I had a personal crisis and emotionally unraveled. As a result I vented to her in a nasty hostile manner. ( I did not curse or threaten her. ) During that session she also acted in a rather hostile manner. She had ice on her tongue and showed me not one ounce of empathy. I somehow resolved my personal crisis. I was relaxing at Long Beach and got a phone call from Jeri who is a therapist who works in intake ai LIC. Jeri told me with a nasty arrogant tone in her voice that I was being thrown out of the Consultation Center because I was nasty to my therapist and also during group therapy I didn't have my mask on.(During that group there was only me and the therapist in the room and we were more than six feet apart. Everybody else was on a screen.) When I tried to give Jeri a rebuttal she abruptly hung up on me. I broke down crying . I couldn't comprehend why a place of therapy would behave like this? I felt like an outcast , totally cut off and disenfranchised with nowhere to go . Several days later my therapist's supervisor Grace Martinez called me on the phone that the Consultation Center wanted me back .She also wanted to hear my side of the story. I explained to Grace "that even though I was nasty with my therapist in our last phone session, I didn't mean anything personal. I was just venting (I didn't curse or threaten her). Being a therapist she shouldn't be so sensitive and she should know the difference. I also stated that since when does a therapist's feelings come before a patient's problems? I stated that the Consultation Center should be run for the benefit of the clients and not the therapists. I further explained it's hard to be politically correct when you are emotionally unraveling. Grace agreed with me and said she would speak to my therapist and see if we could work things out. She said she would get back to me in a couple of days. Grace never got back to me and when I phoned she was unavailable. I became disgusted and I again emotionally unraveled. Two straight nights I spent sitting on my living room couch staring at the wall from midnight until dawn. While attempting to play tennis the next day I unraveled. I threw my racket to the ground and told my roommate I was breaking down and needed to go to a hospital. To make a long story shorter I ended up in the Elmhurst hospital emergency room for 5 1/2 hours. It was like Dante's Inferno but that's another grim story to told elsewhere . I was then taken upstairs to the 11th floor where I spent two hellacious weeks. I phoned the Long Island Consultation Center to tell them I was there. During my two weeks at Elmhurst, I did not get one visit or phone call from the Long Island Consultaton Center. Feeling neglected ,there were many nights I cried. After one week I wanted to go home but Elmhurst held me there against my will. One night they forcibly gave me a shot of Halycon to calm me down. I finally started to pull myself together and used the time in the hospital to bond with the other patients and work on myself. I attempted to take charge of my life by phoning family and friends and setting boundaries. Realizing you get more with a carrot than you do with a stick, I started to be friendly and joke around with the staff and I tried to help the other patients with their problems. I was finally released after two weeks . While at home I still didn't hear from the Consultation Center even though they knew I was released from Elmhurst . I finally phoned the receptionist at the Long Island Consulation Center and told her that I wasn't coming back. I called my HMO Healthfirst and got a new therapist . I joined the Central Queens YHMA and I am getting on with my life. Sometimes you go through a storm and come out a wiser better person. I decided nobody was going to steal my happiness not even the Long Island Consultation Center. There are some very good therapists there but they are compromised by insensitive egocentric arrogant incompetent people in management who couldn't care less about the clients. They somehow think it is a country club for therapists. The Long Island Consultation Center gets a rating on the internet of 1 1/2 stars out of 5. Would you go to a hotel, or restaurant or a movie that got such a poor rating? Then why would you go to a place of therapy that gets only 1 1/2 stars.You deserve better. Larry M. read more

I would avoid this place at all costs unless you want your rights violated. Under their care I was slandered with a variety of fallacious accusations based on negative Latin stereotypes; ranging from being an abuser; to selling drugs; to using heroin. Bear in mind I have a spotless record and have never dabbled in anything illegal or unhealthy. I would come in for anxiety and would leave traumatized and appalled after every session. I don't think I am the only one accusing them of prejudice if you read some of the things people are saying. They figure that the people there are marginalized and who will believe us if we complain. read more

This review is strictly for the experience of psychiatry here. I've had two sessions with Dr Haroon and both have been awful. Her intake appointment with me was rude, with questions about my sexual identity ("How would you know you're bisexual if you've never had a girlfriend?") along with being deeply incapable of communication. After my first intake where I was prescribed an anti depressant and my usual ADHD med, I was told I had to have Haroon call my insurance for clearance of my medication. I left MULTIPLE messages with the front desk to contact Haroon to do this. Today I finally had my second meeting with her. She only asked if I was "okay" and Jf I'm sleeping. I said yes that's all fine but that I needed an update on my ADHD medication. She then proceeds to tell me she can't just PRESCRIBE IT SO EASILY even though she clearly did last month, and as I'm telling her all she has to do is call my insurance to clear it up, she says that I all of a sudden need to get an EKG TEST AND MEDICAL CLEARANCE from my doctor before she can give me the medication which I was taking as early as this year. I've been on ADHD meds for two years. It is a controlled substance, yes, but she would know as a New York State psychiatrist to look at the registry of patients who have used a controlled substance to know I have used them before. The fact she then had the GALL to ask if I "really needed them" or if I want to sell them on the street cemented the nature of this woman to me as not only incredibly unhelpful, but not empathetic to what my needs are. My experience with the front desk and therapy though? Amazing and lovely. read more

I'd like to start off by saying the receptionist staff are a great bunch of people who work hard to do their jobs and puts in the extra mile for appointment reminders. Jill is a hard working individual who goes above and beyond with a great attitude while having to deal with a difficult demographic of patients. My therapist is Edward Creighton and he truly goes above and beyond to advocate for his patients despite this being a Medicaid center that obviously come with a lot of associated difficulties with the sheer number of patients being handled. He is a compassionate individual who really works with you to solve the root of your issues while maintaining the utmost professional behavior. He is a gem in this mental health clinic. My issues lie with the program director Grace Martinez. I received a phone call from Ms. Martinez regarding an program issue that has been handled in the past with my therapist. Ms. Martinez accused me of not complying with my therapy without even reading my file with underlying tones and insinuations that I am not doing what I'm supposed to be doing. She came off rude and disrespectful and I don't know how a program director can make assumptions about a patient without even reading their file. She is unfit in addressing patients and the reason why this negative review is being written. I understand this clinic may handle a lot of patients with severe mental deficits, however, you cannot treat everyone the same way and as a mental health professional you have to be able to adapt and be respectful to every individual patient you are addressing without cynicism. The psychiatric director Dr. Carl Rosennman is very professional and compassionate about getting to the root of your psychiatric issue to help resolve issues that may be holding you back from achieving your true potential. I've went through a plethora of psychiatrists in this mental health center and can't say they are the best with the exception of Dr. Rosennman. Dr. Tandem needs to be trained in cultural sensitivity and the psychiatric program feels more like a Medicaid mill. There are not many reviews on this institution and I hope someone will find this useful if they are ever looking to seek mental health help. The stigma of seeking help for mental health is still highly stigmatized in today's society and I hope everyone will feel more comfortable discussing it in the near future. With all being said, this is one of the better mental health institutions in queens that accept Medicaid and help the community with mental health resources. read more

If you value your mental health, stay far away from here. The therapist and psychiatrist I spoke to both seemed uninterested, almost as if they didn't want to be there. My therapist, Allison seemed to have this judgmental attitude about her. When I mentioned I was a social drinker, she would ask me questions such as "did you drink today?" when I clearly mentioned that I drink at least every 5 to 7 months with friends. Sometimes I even go a year without touching the stuff. Yet she still thought it necessary to ask me if I drank alcohol on every one of our sessions, completely disregarding the main reason I wanted to undergo therapy. If I could compare this dreadful place and its staff to a brand, they would have to be the chinese knock-off variant. read more

This place is pure and utter TRASH! They operate on this principle--that all people who experience addiction are one and the same, namely: liars, in denial, classless, thieves, idiots, etc. So, if you wanna get neatly pigeonholed, come to this place where you can get treated by someone half your age with pink hair who, from the very start, acts like their your 'mother from hell.' That is, they will judge you, inappropriately snarkily state that you're ignoring your problem when you decline their services, and generally make you want to hurt them desperately. I hope the staff of this place suffers more pain than I ever have or will. I hope they drop off the face of this earth. Their mind sets are so narrow, they deserve no place on this earth. I would do terrible things to the staff here, if I could legally do so. I won't be able to do so, in other words, but LICC staff: I hate you with such a passion, you have no idea about the backgrounds or personalities of the people you make laughable attempts to treat. You are so unworthy of being in the 'helping' profession, when you do nothing of the kind. I came here of my own free will, and you didn't trust me on anything. My contempt for you runs deeper than you will ever know. Readers: please excuse my good review from years ago. I got one good therapist that time, by chance. Came again for general therapy and this place was so wrong. I hope they get shut down, but, unfortunately, they are raking in their Medicaid stipends from all the people court mandated who attend. My advice: if you can, find a different place. They are full of judgement here. I'm generally a very kind person. However, for the staff of this place: every time they suffer, my spirit will be laughing with joy. They are so unfamiliar with the *variety* of personalities and redeeming qualities of people who also happen to have any addiction issues. I recommend S.M.A.R.T. meetings to get help without the double serving heap of judgement on the side.. read more

My short visit here was not mandated and had nothing to do with a brush with the law or anything in that vein. I would have preferred the waiting room/intake vibe to be a tad less "casual", but as far as non-profits go, I certainly wouldn't call the people at LICC unprofessional -- and I can only imagine the gamut of personality types they must have to deal with on a regular basis. Regardless, any and all frustrations I may have felt before intake were completely dispelled by the counselor Ms. Gail Copeland. She's a consummate professional with a very down-to-Earth personality. I felt that I was being listened to, taken seriously and never judged. I won't be returning for the sole reason that they don't accept my coverage, but I couldn't help adding my experience and four well-deserved stars to even out the lopsided reviews. My feeling is that the people who are most and best served by this center are unfortunately also very unlikely to dedicate much of their energy to writing Yelp reviews, making an accurate snapshot difficult to garner. read more

This place has some nasty counselors that make you feel like you're an alcoholic and have huge problems, when all you really need is someone to help you through this frustrating time.. this place totally screwed me over with their "2 absence limit".. i honestly thought otherwise (3 absence limit.. like every other place) and my counselor was just plain nasty about it, telling me that I must have drank some alcohol and wanted to avoid a meeting... I had a court date and had to go to work and couldn't miss a full day... but no.. they thought I was lying and didn't even want to hear it.. I even have the pink paper from court with the date on it... f*Cking jerks.. they don't even deserve that one star.. read more

I don't know who's handling the phones at this place, but they need to be replaced with someone with respect. I was just called for the millionth time about seeing the psychiatrist, who called me earlier to check up and ask if I wanted medication. Once I said no, she said "ok take care" and hung up. The woman who just called me was now calling to "reschedule" this appt. Reschedule what? I've called and left messages and spoken with people there several times to cancel and I'm still getting calls about it. I explained, once again, that I wanted to cancel and she said "cancel what? I didn't even give u the appointment yet" and i told her the situation and she says "what you're saying is you don't want to see the doctor then?" I said "correct" and she says with an attitude "ok, GOTCHU, bye" and just hangs up on me. I've been a patient here for about 2 months now and I'm starting to get annoyed by all the questions of being medicated. I should only have to say it once that I do NOT want medication. read more

I called to have a subscription filled by doctor Rosembaum and this doctor was so rude and abrupt and basically told me that he did not believe that I was mentally ill and when I ask him why he said that because "all of you people lie". I tried to reach out to his boss only to find out that they did not even have a voicemail. I found this to be very unprofessional and plan to seek another doctor somewhere else. read more

So disappointed with my decision coming to this s*itty place! The staff is completely unprofessional, rude and mostly discouraging! People make mistakes nobody is perfect, we all do...some different than others.. Mandated counseling by courts, yet turned out the one doing the counseling had a problem himself, counseled a group got $ from something personal and went back to his habit! Are u serious!? Yet everyone kept quiet..lol plz..not everyone has an issue, some of us just took a step heading the wrong direction during that period! Wouldn't recommend...EVER!!! read more

The receptionists are cheery, but things stop there. I chose to come here, it wasn't by force and it was horrible. They made me wait over an hour to see anyone the first time I came because they were late. The waiting room is small, rowdy, and loud. It also smells awful because of the well-used bathroom beside it. Nasty. They're not the best listeners to people who choose to seek help and better their lives. They also don't communicate well with one another and clearly have no idea what therapists say from prior sessions. I had the same questions asked by three different therapists at three different sessions. I never saw the same person ever. Dr. Tanden was soooo rude and condescending and did not have proper or respectful conversations about therapy or medication. Her motto was, "Go on medication, it's faster". What? That's all you're gonna say? And when I asked questions she treated me like I was stupid for not agreeing with her and looked at me like I was a piece of garbage. How is a therapist out here making people feel like nothing? She didn't even introduce herself to me until I asked what her name was. To add, her phone kept going off and she answered calls during the session. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go here. read more

I saw the paltry one-star rating for this place, and was inspired to chime in. This place has been a GREAT help to me emotionally after having my sense of self torn in two and stomped all over. I came to them *freely*, with no legal problems, no obligation to come here whatsoever. I just needed help badly, after a very damaging time in my life. I came in here a complete mess, barely able to get dressed, and unable to stop crying, even in the waiting room. While it's fair to say that time (a few months) has healed some of those wounds, this place has been very important in getting myself back to being a well-functioning member of society. What I've found here is nothing but caring support, well, and a lot of people who are here are DUI's and other legal problems, but that doesn't matter much except that you occasionally encounter someone who is very angry to be here. I go here every week for therapy, attend groups, and see their psychiatrist. And get free metro-cards to get here and back (with Medicaid.) What I see is a group of not crazy highly paid professionals, but ones who genuinely want to help you get better. Even the front desk staff is very nice, friendly, and playful. Just be nice to them, and you'll get the same in return! read more

While my experience with them is not current itis nevertheless relevant. I recently had a repressed memory reveled to me -after the death of both my parents, long separation from melast relevant therapist, and surviving 9/11. Apparently around the age of 9, I was physically abused by both our housekeeper (my mother decided to go back to work with my father in his business - I was 9, my sister was 4 1/2), and a camp counselor (teacher during the school year) driving a group od kids home in his car. The upshot resulted in my throwing tantrums to the extent that I kicked in the cardboard walls of our garden apartment. My mother told my father that I was trying to talk to him, but apparently I could not articulate the incident as the housekeeper still worked for us, and I probably feared reprisal from her. My mother was advised to seek counseling and we landed at LICC where I was given a rorszchack test by a psychologist who did not appear to like children. At that time the word schizophrenia was an umbrella diagnosis applied to almost everyone who was not easily understood. I was then given counseling for about a year with a very nice psychologist who used to buy me a coffee ice cream cone every Saturday, and clay to sculpt with. I was given medications - I don't know by whom - and then the dog was medicated as well. Neither they not my parents explored the possibility of something preceeding the tantrums, and certainly the psychologist was physically removed from out housekeeper enough so to be perceived as someone safe to talk to - but the abuse incidents were not a topic that I was encouraged to express - so they went buried. When I dropped out of a small college in the midwest, I went to see the psychologist privately. She barely counseled my, but was a witness to my eating large amounts of cake and chocolate. I was depressed from dropping out, from having my first boyfriend knocking someone else up (it was Vietnam and disappeared to Europe), a male friend of mine disclosed that he was gay, I could not concentrate and wanted a baby. The upshot of all of this was years of therapy, many hospitalizations, misdiagnosises - simply because it was easier to label than to unearth the unpleasant causes of acting out behavior. read more

I went to this place because I was having a recurring mental health problem that was not dealt with until age 26. I suffer from depression which I began getting treated from here. They label you as having an addiction even if that is not a reason you are visiting there. They push you into a group for " Newly Sober" individuals who are mandated by court to attend. Granted I did have legal issues but my reasons for coming here had nothing to do with it. I thought it would help my case, but it had no affect on it regardless. This place attempts to help but the staff are all former addicts and that is not encouraging. The doctors believe everyone in front of them is a drug or alcohol abuser, but truthfully if you are poor, young or old and you are struggling in life, a drink or two or whatever you use to cope does not make one an addict but you can't explain that to them. I rather try their anger management group. This place is commutable in Queens, but the level of professional help is better sought some where else. Most that trample through this place are court mandated offenders and mentally challenged individuals. I digress. I will stick it out as I have had much worse experiences trying to get mental health help. Take your chances if you want.. read more
