My family and I always have a great experience whenever we visit this place. The receptionists and Barry and Bob are very welcoming, helpful, efficient, and have a great attitude. When my son was little, my glasses frequently required tightening and adjusting, and they always did it for free and with a smile. When they were unable to perform the repairs by themselves they sent them out for a reasonable fee. Took me way too long to write this review. If you care about anything (hobbies, interests, consumables, luxury goods), you'll know that there are levels to this game. Take something like horology, which I like. There are the casuals (people who have a mild interest in the space), people who chase brand recognition (they usually care about the clout) or the industry folks (they could be on the sell or buy side but usually they are in it for the business piece of the equation). Then there are the enthusiasts. These people tend to be obsessive, know all the reference numbers of watches, the history behind them, their cultural significance, and the technical specifications. Barry is an enthusiast when it comes to the eyeglass game. Enthusiasts know what they're talking about, care about what they're selling and have too much respect for the craft to BS you. Full Disclosure: I'm every optician's nightmare - highly myopic, light sensitive, weird focusing issues and super neurotic to boot! With eyesight like mine I'm no stranger to opticians, and I've suffered at the hands of many incompetent yet pricey optometrists mostly in NYC. They never got my prescription quite right and always pushed for a quick sale. Well my search finally came to an end when I found Barry Santini at LIOpticians. Barry is a master optician with a huge knowledge base of lenses, frames, and the latest research in corrective vision. During my last visit for prescription sunglasses I had to make multiple trips and ask lots of nerdy annoying questions to get it right. Barry has the patience of a saint to deal with people like me, plus golden hands to adjust frames and lenses in-house. LIOpticians has some hard-to-find frames in stock like Matsuda, and if they don't have what you want they can probably get it for you, just ask. I especially like the fact that they'll procure lenses from any lab your want - Zeiss, Essilor, Nikon etc. (Most opticians are wedded to one lab for financial reasons but not LIOC). If you have a tricky prescription like mine, or even if you don't, try Long Island Opticians for your glasses and contacts. Their prices are good and their customer service/integrity second to none. I had never been to an optician before..and I wasn't going for any eye exams or prescriptions at the time, I simply googled "best place to have sunglasses repaired near me"...and guess who popped up..none other than Barry and his gracious staff!..I had no idea what I was in for, not to mention I was close to 15 miles away at the time..but I had a good feeling about this place so off I went, and boy oh boy lemme tell ya..this was one of the best blind decisions I've made , no pun intended ...His lovely staff made me feel absolutely comfortable while waiting only a few minutes,...and not only is Barry a great guy, and the bearer of so much great information,..he repaired my bent rims to perfection and even had a perfect replacement for my cracked RayBan lens..he also took the time to discuss darn near all the frames in the store that I took fancy to lol, and I never felt rushed..and BTW, there's a plethora of fancy to frumpy frames there for everyones taste! ....Now that my aging eyesight requires more attention.. than the crave for fashionable sunglasses..I can safely say that I now have a GREAT optician, Barry, at Long Island Opticians !! read more

Alas - I am putting this review up for a great Long Island business that I did actually use, but it seems like Yelp's filter is filtering out all reviews I've ever posted (no idea why). So I have no idea if this review will actually help this lovely business as I would like it to. Anyway... Previously, when I needed glasses, I simply got them from Costco (and I'm not knocking them AT ALL). But given how much I have been in front of the computer for work and studying, and that Costco's lenses eventually accumulate scratches and chips after a year, I figured it might be worth it to investigate if there are "better" alternatives out there. I didn't know what better really meant initially - I was just hoping for some better anti-glare to help with my excessive time spent in front of various computer, tablet, and phone displays. A little bit of research on the internet turned up "HD lenses" and different options for anti-glare coats - I figured it was time to visit an optician and talk with them to see if any of these things would help. I found Long Island Opticians (LIO) through their Yelp page and stopped by the next day. I had a fantastic experience at LIO. I'll be the first to admit that I am probably not the easiest customer - I'm paranoid, I ask a lot of questions, I want everything to be perfect, and even more so if the purchases is going to be expensive. As a customer, I think I'm a needy, high-maintenance guy. Barry at LIO was awesome - he spent over an hour with me that first visit explaining everything with regards to what lenses I could get, what my options were, what might help, and also sharing a few good laughs. Their selection of frames was also great. And after I picked everything out, he took all these different measurements of my face with the frames on to make sure the lenses would be designed specifically. I ended up going with a nice set of frames fitted with HD lenses from Nikon with a special anti-glare coating designed specifically to filter out a lot of the excess harsher light from computer screens, tablets, and smart phones. I received them a few weeks ago and have been wearing them since - they're fantastic! Yes, they're quite a bit more expensive than my glasses from Costco, but the frames and lenses are completely different than what you'd get there, and I have honestly noticed a difference. I think I'll still go to Costco if I ever need a backup pair of glasses - for the price I don't think they can be beat. But for my main pair, because I use them every second of every day, it's worth it for me to get something a lot more specialized for my needs at LIO. I can't thank Barry enough for what he has done for me and for my family over the years. I have been wearing glasses since I was 1 year old and have very complex issues where my prescription appears to change and optometrists with all of their equipment can't get it right. I can say for sure that without Barry's expertise I would still be struggling and paying hundreds of dollars on lenses that I wouldn't see well through after 10 days of installation. He went out of his way to get the prescription right and I forgot how many lenses he exchanged ( somewhere between 5 and 7 I think) to get the perfect prescription. That was after I saw 3 different optometrists now, and probably hundreds throughout my life long struggle with this. There are opticians, and then there is this place. My G-d, you think one eye place is like any other, and then you find a place where no matter how far you stray, you know you will return forever. I have found my eyeglass home. Bob is the best eyeglass stylist I have EVER met. My prescription is so strong that wherever I go, the people always tell me what I can't have, which is usually all but 3 ugly pairs. Well Bob couldn't stop telling me what I could have. I suppose if I could say one bad thing about this place was there were too darn many frames to pick from. And Bob is such a nice guy, good luck leaving with just one pair. He also makes the lenses himself and is so picky about how thin they are. I have had thick coke bottle glasses since I was 3 years old, and these are the thinnest lightest things I've ever owned! I usualy spend as much as 900$ on my glasses because they are so strong, but Bob not only got me into something thin and good looking, I got to keep 250$ as I thought I would end up spending way more than I did. I don't buy cheesy glasses on the internet because one, I have a bad prescription, and I like to see. And two, I like to try on what I'm spending money on to make sure it's fit by a professional and not a cheesy camera. They also have more Raybans in one room than I've ever seen in my life. This place is Rayban central! Guess what my second pair was? My FIRST pair of prescription sunglasses! But it's not all cheesy brands at Long Island Opticians. For my clear pair I ended up with a custom made horn frame that fits me perfectly, exactly to my head which they measured with a digital machine that was super techie. So glad I found this place! They carry a very expensive and exclusive brand of eyewear from CoCo Song. I saw the line a year ago and was very impressed with Barry who was very friendly, helpful and patient with me. I couldn't decide which pair I wanted because each pair was so unique. I also couldn't afford them. When I returned a year later Barry reduced them significantly and was running a special on lenses. I wound up buying 3 pairs! He was so gracious, he gifted me a gorgeous box for my glasses. I brought in my prescription from another optometrist and they made my glasses. I had trouble with the prescription. I have been wearing glasses for sixty years and have mostly been a contact lens wearer with glasses only at night and morning. I never thought too much about my vision with the glasses, which was never that good. In the last several years I had accepted that my vision would always be a little blurry with the glasses. This year I had lots of burning with the contacts and decided that I would probably be extending my eyeglass wear, so I got a new script from a new opthamologist. My husband loves Barry and Bob and recommended I get my glassess at LIO. I am so glad I did, not only do they have a great selection of frames, my vision with the glasses is vastly improved and I can read things that I haven't been able to without squinting or moving much closer to the object. I initially visited LIO while looking for high quality frames made in Germany with a unique style. I visited a bunch of stores over a year and the owner Barry even paged through catalogs with me of frames he offers trying to find the perfect match to no avail. I had visited around 10 stores overall and looked online. I was a picky man on a mission. Rather than throw his hands in the air, Barry actually pointed me in the right direction of competitors, and due to his recommendations, I found the perfect pair of wrap-styled designer German frames. I greatly appreciated this. After I got bought my frames elsewhere, I read about all different lens types. I figured, I'm going to need glasses for a lifetime, I may as well understand the industry. On the internet, I came across what's known as single vision digitally surfaced/personalized/high definition lenses. It took me a while to cut through the industry marketing/hype and figure out that these descriptions all refer to the same thing - single vision (also progressive but I don't want these) lenses custom designed to your frame & eye positions so you see clearly in all directions peripherally and even when you move your eyes. I researched where to get them made and, oddly, Barry kept popping up on the internet because he has thousands of posts on an optical website, articles, and is a national speaker. Before I gave him the job I asked a few different places pricing for then lenses. Long Island Opticians pricing seemed in-line with the competition. I read a review here with the the adjustments which was a negative to me and almost swayed me away from this place, however, my experience both before & after receiving my order did not match that review at all. I chose this place because Barry seems to love his job and I believe knowledgeable people who love their jobs simply produce better work. After speaking with Barry, he said personalized lenses are about 80% of his sales, which really impressed me because other stores either never brought up the topic or were able to explain them properly in a way I could understand. If I ran a business, I'd market this in as "New High Definition Lenses, See More Clearly than Contacts" in big words on the window or something, but apparently all these businesses let this opportunity pass them by. Barry explained lens thickness, wrote down lens types by color accuracy/errors, etc., and made a recommendation. He was able to explain technicals in an easy to understand manner. Because I my frame design, I went with thicker lenses for better color accuracy after his assurances that it wouldn't be too thick. He took some extra measurements of my eye positioning the help shape the lenses. I was shown transitions, but decided they weren't for me. I wanted polarized sunglasses but transitions with polarization aren't available until May 2012. After leaving a deposit, I received the lenses last week approximately 4 business days later. Barry sat with me and explained how proud he was of this job. He showed me how he shaped the edges of the lenses and colored them gray to both reduce reflection & match my frame, then demonstrated to me how the lenses in my previous frame had a certain negative light bouncing effect that his lens finishing reduced. Barry showed me how the lenses were shaped to my wrap frames so the fit has a nice appearance while being hidden to others. I have very deep set eyes. Barry said a 14mm depth is average, I was 23mm. The standards maxed out at 19mm and I was told the machines literally said, "error." Barry went through extra effort to make personalized lenses work for my deep set eyes in my wrap frames by calling industry standards people to help compensate through other atypical adjustments. Impressively, through his knowledge & personal contacts, he made the personalized lens curvature work for my extremely deep-set eyes and non-flat frames with spectacular results. While I was impressed and happy to see better and move my eyes around, the difference really struck me later that night when I laid down in bed to watch some TV. The positioning gave me a very broad perspective of something I was intimately familiar with looking at, my 28' wide room. For the first time in my life I could see my room laid out like a panorama with stunning clarity. Because my contacts don't have correction for my astigmatism but my glasses do, I was used to glasses for clarity, but preferred contacts overall because of the peripheral vision without realizing why. No more. My glasses with personalized lenses offer both & win the contest with contacts hands down. No more the dry eyes or extra effort, especially when I'm tired. After this, I can't go back to non-personalized lenses where I have to turn my head to see what I should be seeing anyway. I live on the North Shore, but have never been really happy with any of the opticians I've used here. I decided to give LI Opticians a try because of the rave reviews. The reviews were right! It was worth driving to the South Shore! I have never had such skilled, personable, and friendly opticians. Picking out glasses is my least-favorite thing to do, but Barry and Bob made it fun, and I ended up with beautiful glasses that look great and have all the features I need to see perfectly. They make the lenses right there, and the quality is impeccable--there's no "sending it out to the lab." I'm normally a contact lens wearer 95% of the time, but working as a nurse, by the end of my shift, my contacts inevitably become dry and irritate my eyes. I never feel inclined my use my pair of glasses however because I don't see as well through them (the prescription is up-to-date of course). A friend suggested I check out LIO and talk to Barry because he was confident that I would probably like the newer "HD" lenses that they had available. I did just that, and Barry spent as much time as I needed going over my options, explaining exactly what the differences were between the lenses, how certain lenses would probably be preferable to me as a contact lens wearer, etc. I also felt they had a beautiful selection of frames - as I've always worn my glasses as an accessory more than for my vision. I chose a lovely Persol frame to go with the Nikon "SeeMax" lenses that Barry recommended would be as good as my contact lenses (which I was definitely skeptical about). About a week later, the glasses arrived, and in completely honesty - they really are just as good, in terms of vision, as contacts. I find I'm even wearing my glasses way more often now than I did in the past because I am just seeing so clearly with them. I did take a leap of faith and pay a bit more for them, trusting Barry and my friend's recommendation that they were worth it. In hindsight, I absolutely feel it they were worth the extra price. Overall, I was very pleased with my experience at LIO - can't recommend them highly enough.. I found Barry and the rest of the team to be very focused on ensuring customer happiness and tailoring to their individual needs.
