I took a dress into LookSmart which I had ordered online but was a tad too big around the bodice area, and the sleeves kept slipping off. They didn't measure me when I first went in but only pinned the sleeves up.
I was shocked when I went to pay and they were going to charge me $60 for this simple stitch! I had been looking for a better taking in of the garment all around, to accommodate for the wrong size, rather than just gathering up the sleeve. However, I was put on the spot and I simply paid and went on my way.
When I came to pick up the dress, I phoned ahead to check it was ready. I was told yes, and so I stopped at Sylvia Park. Turned out that the dress was not, in fact, ready, and I would have to come back later, in a few hours. I now believe that they hadn't actually started sewing my dress until this point, despite having over a week to work on it.
When I came back - not a short drive to Sylvia Park, I might add - the dress was not right. The sleeves had been taken up too far and now they were far too tight. When I remarked on this, she got very defensive and claimed that she couldn't do anything because it wasn't her who had pinned it up and that we would just have to take the dress as it was. As if it were my fault that one of her workers pinned it wrong!!
Even so, I ended up leaving the dress with them to be realtered, being more specific this time about them taking in the sides of the dress so that it would work better, considering the money I was spending. To their credit, they were eventually willing to realter this for me.
When I went back the second time to pick up my dress, I tried it on, and it looked perfect. It was tighter around the bodice and the sleeves had been let out a little, enough to be comfortable. I happily took it home and put it in my closet.
A week later, when I went to try it on,
I found that the sides had not been sewn, only pinned! Of course, when the pins came out, I was back to the original problem of it being too baggy, and was $60 poorer despite having gained nothing at all - in fact, I had lost a few hours of my life over it.
I had decided to end this cycle of pain, to go and ask for a refund and to simply sew the dress myself - I'm not a seamstress but I think even I could do a better job of it that this branch did. Thankfully, they did refund the money back to me and were very apologetic.
I understand that this is a difficult job and the situation at Sylvia Park is very small and so maybe it is hard to keep track of what a customer wanted, and all of that sort of thing. It was also around Christmas time so they were likely incredibly busy. However, I wouldn't recommend this service. read more
