It's the kind of thing that can keep little ones happily entertained for a bit. Admission is free, though donations are suggested, and it feels like a lovely community spot that's worth supporting. We really wanted a cozy intimate backyard wedding vibe and that's exactly what we got here! Huge plus is my husband loves history, and you get free access to the museum for a year with a ton of other benefits once you have an event here + your donation is tax deductible. You also don't need much decor at all due to the natural beauty but we hired a decorator for the arches, stages, and table settings. Lisa will also give you a list of vendors partners you can work with just in case. Overall, she was really amazing to work with and super responsive because anytime we needed to do a tour walk through with vendors or a tour of the venue, she was there. We had a spring wedding of close to ~200 folks and thank God it didn't rain but summer or even fall would be beautiful here. A small, but meaningful museum about the history of Los Altos. It's got an exhibit on Sarah Winchester and her sister Isabel Merriman who both settled in this area although they're from the East Coast. Quite interesting lives they led. Upstairs, there's a permanent exhibit on the history of this city, which has about 40,000 people, but still feels like a town. Overall, it's a great little museum (with free (!) admission) and about 20-30 minutes is plenty of time to explore and get an idea of the exhibits and the staff are friendly and helpful to give an overview. There's also a little gift shop by the front desk with cute trinkets and toys, as well as books and other souvenirs. You can even rent this museum for a private event such as a party or a wedding! read more

We had such a great experience hosting our corporate team-building event for ~60 people at the Los Altos History Museum! The venue is beautiful -- we used both the full courtyard and the galleries, and it worked perfectly for our day. Our event had a few moving parts, including a scavenger hunt, full catering for breakfast and lunch, and even a magician/mentalist -- and the space handled it all seamlessly. The amenities were super convenient too. We had a shuttle drop off team members, and those who drove had no issues finding parking. Lisa was amazing to work with. She was responsive, helpful, and incredibly accommodating -- from the early setup to coordinating all the logistics. Our team had a great time, and the smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces made the whole experience feel effortless. Free admission. Videos and exhibits about the Spanish missions in California, how streets got their names, and the El Camino Real bells. They're really proud of their bells here! And apricots! The indoor museum is small, but informative, with some fun facts about the history of the city and surrounding area. The outdoor space and garden are lovely (they actually sometimes do events out there). The Smith House is something similar to the Museum of American Heritage, with items of the past set up in different rooms, including a unique square grand Steinway piano from the 1800's at the corner of one of the rooms. There was a staff member/docent giving a tour of this house this past Sunday afternoon too. We listened in a bit, but preferred self-guided exploration of all the different spaces on site. The main museum has two levels, but it's small, even with the outdoor area, so it's easy to see it all in less than an hour. On a rainy day if you don't want to spend time outside, 30 minutes would probably be sufficient. Keep in mind, they have rotating special exhibits, so check the website to see what's currently on displqy. Also, plenty of parking available right in front of the museum. read more

This is a lovely, little museum that shows how Los Altos's origin, and features the people who were prominent in the town. (There is a library building in front, and the museum entrance is further down.) The museum has a gift shop and several interactive exhibits. It includes a model of the downtown recreating how it looked in the 1930's and features Hidden Villa, and the family who donated it to the town. We received a tour of the Smith house by two informative docents. The house is filled with furniture, equipment, and decor from the Depression Era. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had an interesting backstory that included a mother who prevented the Smith's marriage for many years; thus, they never had children. This museum is definitely worth a visit! read more

We hosted our early summer wedding at Los Altos History Museum and it was the perfect venue! We love that they allow you to be creative with the space and make it your own. We had the ceremony in front of their large oak tree, reception in the open courtyard, and cocktail area in between those two. The venue was large enough to have events in different sections of the property (ceremony, cocktail hours, reception, dance floor, photobooth, dessert/coffee area, etc.) throughout the night while accommodating our 140 guests without feeling cramped, but still had the cozy feel. There is so much greenery around the property that photos from all angles turned out beautifully. Additionally, though the space is open, the sun was never an issue for us or our guests. Lisa from LAHM was so easy to work with, clear with instructions, and responsive/patient with any questions I had throughout the planning process all the way to the day of the wedding. read more

This made it so easy to intermingle with every single person from our wedding. We had the ceremony and the dinner in the same place and the conversion from one to another was seamless. The staff really knew what they were doing. Lisa Porter, the site coordinator was a huge selling point for us. She knew the ins and outs of the entire venue including what would be feasible for our wedding. We loved every single preferred caterer on their list, especially Le Papillon. We were married at the Los Altos History Museum on a Sunday evening in June, 2025. The venue was perfect, with gardens in bloom, a beautiful courtyard, plenty of space for cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, and so many great sites for photographs around the Museum grounds and exhibits. We had the museum at the top of a short list before we went to visit, hoping for an outdoor venue for a wedding with a family reunion feel. We were blending a large multi-generational family with roots on the East and West Coasts, and the museum grounds feel like a perfect blend of New England and California summertime, with a brick courtyard, large heritage oaks, and historic buildings. The secret gift in booking the venue, though, was Lisa Porter, the Museum's Event Coordinator. Lisa was responsive, professional, knowledgeable about every detail we could think of, and had so much helpful advice at every step of the planning process. She worked exceptionally well with our vendors and made it easy for them to get information and support whenever they needed it. She was present through rehearsal and event; she told us when we first met that she would be the first person to arrive and the last person to leave, available for whatever might come up. It was just beautiful at night; perfect for a summer evening wedding, and the "golden hour" glow is gorgeous in the photos. We held cocktail hour, dinner, toasts, and first dances outside, then moved the dance party indoors. We had 150 guests; there was plenty of space for everyone who wanted to dance, and the weather at night was still comfortable outside between dances for talking and mingling. Working with Lisa (their event coordinator) was a breeze, she addressed any concerns and questions I had in a timely manner and offered lots of helpful ideas and suggestions. The venue was beautiful and didn't need any additional decor. Guests raved about what an amazing space it was and the caterer, Heirloom Catering. It was a kid friendly venue and we made a space that was more dedicated for the kids, and there was also the field right next door that the kids could play at. Lisa also had the great idea that we play a movie for the kids upstairs later in the evening and it was perfect. Kids were able to run around for awhile first and then mellow out with a movie. We're so glad we found the Los Altos History Museum for our wedding! The venue was perfect for an outdoor reception with 170 guests. The space is well enclosed with lots of beautiful greenery. The orchard in the back was a perfect spot for portraits during golden hour. The museum wedding coordinator Lisa was responsive, accommodating, knowledgeable, and had lots of great suggestions to make the day flow smoothly. They also let us store supplies at the venue the week leading up to the wedding which was very helpful. The bathrooms are the weakest part of this venue. We recently held our wedding reception at the Los Altos History Museum, and it was truly PERFECT! The venue itself is simply gorgeous. We started out with cocktail hour in a beautiful shady area of the property where guests could mingle and enjoy the beautiful landscape & architecture. The bistro lighting, surrounding trees, barn-like buildings, & pergolas made the space so romantic - with the natural beauty of the venue, no additional florals were needed. On top of that, the venue offers a ton of flexibility - we were able to bring food trucks & food stands to the venue, and there are few venues in the Bay Area that would allow that! The location itself is ideal. Parking is plentiful; and while the museum is very close to downtown Los Altos and I280, it feels so isolated & private - perfect for a wedding reception! The secret to hosting the perfect event at Los Altos History Museum is LisaP, the event planner at the museum. The Castro family inherited from the Mexican government over 8,000 acres of present day Mountain View in 1842. Henry Rengstorff arrived from Germany in 1850 with $4 in his pocket. Nasa Ames was names after Rear Admiral Moffett. El Camino used to be the San Francisco-San Jose Stage Road. Beautiful grounds with lots of grass and 2 bocce ball lanes. In every way, LAHM was the absolute perfect wedding venue for us. Magically good. First -- the people. Lisa, the events director, was so great to work with and put us at ease right away, from getting us scheduled instantly for the first tour (six months from our date!) to communicating clearly & excellently throughout. The second time we were there she was finishing up an appointment and (no surprise!) the other folks couldn't say enough nice things about her. She was so key as the point person to get everything running smoothly. Second -- the venue is really ideal for a wedding ceremony and reception. Cute, cozy, and private, with lots of flowers and very light touch needed on any additional decor. The area in the back with a few tall trees made for stunning golden hour photos. It was one of those places where you can walk in and just instantly feel, "this is it" -- and that's how it was for us. Our guests loved it, too! We had a ton of glowing comments about our choice of venue. That made us so happy. Third -- it was practical. From their extensive experience with hosting events like this (& recommended vendor lists) to their convenient location (nestled right in near downtown Los Altos and easy to get to; also, copious parking)...it made it very easy to focus on everything else that goes into planning. I recently had the pleasure of working at LAHM as a wedding planner since my couple had chosen to get married here. The venue itself is absolutely beautiful, filled with flowers & greenery, string lighting already installed (which can be expensive if brought in!), and a rich history that adds a special touch to any event. The multiple spaces available allowed guests to explore and enjoy different areas throughout the day, making the whole experience feel dynamic and unique! On the day of the wedding, we needed to do a flip of the ceremony space into a dining area, and the venue's setup allowed us to have the tables ready & set up inside during the ceremony, which was incredibly helpful and made the transition smooth. The venue manager, Lisa, was great as well--she was easy to communicate with and extremely helpful throughout the planning process as well as on the day of the wedding. Super small, but the building in made to look like an old fruit packing plant that would have existed just miles away 50 years ago when this whole town was orchards. Easy parking, the staff were sweet, admission was free the day we went. My partner and I had our wedding here recently. We got engaged well over a year ago, and we immediately started venue shopping. We wanted an outdoors wedding with a bit of rustic and romantic feel. When we visited the Los Altos History Museum we felt it captured exactly the essence of what we wanted our wedding to be like, so we knew it was "the one." We booked it May 2018 for our wedding on September 1, 2019 (Sunday of Labor Day weekend). We worked with Mark who is the event coordinator there, he is very easy to work with and always prompt to answer any questions or concerns. They do provide a list of preferred vendors as the venue is basically "barebones" and you have to choose the catering, decor, DJ, etc etc. They do have many rentals for basic chairs and tables which we used to make things easier on us and to save money. The venue is already pretty so it doesn't need "excessive" embellishment. We do recommend you chose a caterer on their list, we did a Flip from ceremony and reception, and our caterer Greenfish knew the ins and outs of the venue and flipped the area in less than an hour. The wedding itself was beautiful, everyone loved the venue, they kept saying how "surprised" they were given the venue is in Downtown Los Altos, but once in you "forget" you are in a city. It was a bit hot earlier in the day but luckily the courtyard gets a good amount of shade by 5pm when the ceremony was held, and as the night progressed the venue looked so pretty with the bistro lights adding that romantic vibe. The dancing was indoors inside the museum, and there is PLENTY of space to get turnt up on the dance floor. The pictures speak for themselves, the museum is truly a special place to have your wedding. Came here for Apricot STEM fair. This place is a lovely venue with lots of shaded outdoor areas and indoor areas too. Event was free, plenty of learning and fun activities for the kids. Free slip-pit Blenheim apricots too! These are normally $25/pound but they had a big box for everyone to sample as much as you like. From the original native Americans, Spanish and Mexican rule, and annexation to the United States. It continues its journey through the Valley of Hearts Delight, technology and then Silicon Valley. Upstairs in the local Los Altos/Silicon Valley History - Ohlone Indians, Mission Santa Clara de Asis, neat Railroad exhibit that works. Downstairs is their current exhibit Reflect & Create: Where Art & History Intersect now thru 10/4/15. It's just ok: like a wool swimsuit, an old typewriter, old eggbeater, etc. Small giftshop - selling books, postcards, Los Altos bag, etc. Docent was able to take me and 2 others to the J. Gilbert Smith House - got to walk around and take pictures inside. Kinda interesting. They have scheduled tours on Sun at 2pm, but ask if a docent can take you inside. If you like outdoor ceremonies, outdoor events, this is the place to be. Ambiance, service and planning-it's perfect! My friends son's wedding event took place here and it was just awesome. Photo-ops are on point, lighting and the weather was good too. It was hot yesterday but the wedding was in the evening, so the weather started to cool down as the sun went down. The only thing to keep in mind is for the ladies, the one's wearing heels, be careful walking around! Some areas are un-even pavement and dirt, you can easily trip and fall. Also not sure if they had another location for the restrooms, but it's across the parking lot area which was not too close to the event area. The LAHM is such a sweet, beautiful and lush venue, tucked away in Los Altos! They have a gorgeous red brick patio with lights already strung across to make any event feel like moderate sized garden party. For our wedding, we loved having a beautiful natural backdrop for our ceremony, but also a space with room for mingling during cocktail hour and for kids to run around (though if you have a kids free wedding, the event space is still perfect!). They were so generous in allowing us to use the Smith House for the bride to hide away while guests arrived, while also giving us space in their main museum to store the belongings of our wedding party. All around, I couldn't imagine a better wedding venue for us! Lisa P. started after we had reserved our date and once she was our point of contact, things couldn't have been easier! She was so helpful and communicative. We even lost one small item on the day of the wedding and she was so diligent in ensuring it was returned to us quickly and easily. Everything we wanted in a wedding venue for our May wedding! I wanted a garden style wedding, my now husband didn't want it to be a winery and for it to be close to home and we both fell in love with this place. The property is so beautifully landscaped with all the plants, the brick patio area the oak trees in the back with the decomposed granite, the historical house along with the arches of wisteria and jasmine! LOVE! The location is convenient too with it being close to major hotel and there being plentiful parking for guests. The wedding coordinator for the venue, Mark, was super easy to work with, he was actually great! Mark's personality is very easy to get a long with, he's very knowledgable about the property since he's been working there for several years and great with answering all of my questions especially as the wedding got closer and closer. I got lots of compliments on the venue just because it so beautiful on it's own let alone being there to celebrate the love between two people. There's so much lighting (strung lights, lights on the arches, light on the oak trees, ect...) already at the venue that you don't need to bring your own. The insides are two story, and I think they change the displays periodically. I know the grounds are offered for events like weddings and receptions. A wonderful place to learn about the rich, vibrant history of Los Altos and the surrounding area. They have rotating exhibits which feature the diverse cultural contributions of early natives, immigrants, settlers, and pioneers. The center itself is aesthetically pleasing, and separated on two floors. It's very nice inside (and out). There is an outside courtyard venue which showcases a preserved windmill, and various pieces of old farming equipment. Very rustic with a barn and italian bistro lights. We coordinated with Mark through email. We had a ton of questions and he was also quick to reply. It ended up not being the right fit for us. We really wanted a sparkler exit but no open fire was allowed and dancing is inside the museum and at the time the museum was displaying bears- i thought it would be kind of off dancing with bears on the walls. I think it is definitely worth it to check out this venue for a wedding or event.
