Authentic food! Reasonable prices and delicious!! You won't be disappointed with this Mexican restaurant.

I grew up in a place where it was easy to get authentic Mexican food, so when I moved to NYC in 1999, I was disappointed in every Mexican restaurant I tried. I spent 15 years there thinking good Mexican food was just one of the things you had to give up when you moved to NY. Then I moved to Beacon, and bemoaned the restaurants I left behind in NYC. However, Los Portales (almost) made up for that (I still regret not being able to go to Vegetarian Dim Sum whenever I want). I've tried other Mexican restaurants in Newburgh, and they've been good, but Los Portales is the best. I've eaten there consistently for 11 years now, and the food has always been delicious. Plus, it's very clean, and the waitstaff is always nice. One night my friends and I placed a takeout order, and when I went to pick it up, they'd given us extra food because they were out of something we'd ordered. They're great. I've never had a bad meal from here. Place is always clean and food is consistently good. This is authentic Mexican. Clean ingredients and real food. We had the chicken soup to start. Ordered the small. It was a large bowls worth. Simple yet delicious. The Al pastor tacos are the best but they only have them on weekends. I had the spicy pork tacos and beef tacos. Tacos are served on 2 corn tortillas w/ lots of fresh lime wedges onion and cilantro on the side. Also got the steak tostada. Incredible. My partner had the Chile rellenos. I swung by with a friend close to closing time, but the staff didn't rush us at all. They were already cleaning up the place when we walked in. We took our sweet time ordering a meal for four to go. The staff wasn't super friendly, but they weren't rude at all and showed a lot of patience. We ordered a couple of tacos, sandwiches, guacamole, drinks, and dessert. My favorites were the cemita portales and guacamole, and my partner really enjoyed the torta cubana. The sandwiches were definitely big enough for 2-3 servings for me, and reheated well the next day. Overall, I'd give it a solid 9/10 for food and value, and I'd definitely come back. read more

The numero de telefono scares me, 845.565.6666, but the food was not anywhere close to being satanic sacrifices. In fact, it was authentic and traditional as well as beyond tasty. The price was reasonable and the atmosphere was quaint. The food is fresh and you can taste that as well as wait for it as it is not reheated but cooked to serve. I will call ahead next time as I spent way too long inside but that's a small price that I didn't really pay for excellent food. The serving size was perfect, in fact maybe a little too much, but I'll be the reheater of my own already cooked to serve meal. The area is sketchy so be aware, I was accosted by two homeless humans and one regular for my food, even the locals know the greatness I had in my take out bag. read more

No stars , have been going here for years,but no longer. Dishonest people, sold me what they said was salsa, but was not. Have bought salsa from there many times, and never had an issue. Brought back the item and they said I must have told them wrong item. Refused to admit they made a mistake and gave me wrong item. Ridiculous! Just wanted a refund, but I guess the 10 bucks was worth losing a steady customer. You are nothing if your not honest. Won't ever go back! We were here once before for dinner - a long time ago. We had actually forgotten that visit until we returned on Saturday. This time we were here for a late lunch/early dinner. I decided to go with the three taco combination for $8. I had the al pastor, chorizo and spicy chicken tacos, with rice and beans. My partner had pork tostada and a chicken taco. He had some of my rice and beans as well :) Everything was delicious. The price was right. It's a really casual place, but it was perfect. Next time we'll get a little more adventurous and try some of the different meats available on the weekends. read more

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in the area, and possibly the beat Mexican food I have had; easily in the top 10 anyway. on Friday through the weekend they serve their Al Pastor tacos and cemitas. I'm talking about fresh, cut pineapple, a proprietary secret spice blend from their home town of Puebla in Mexico and incredibly fresh ingredients. I arrived too early for the Greek festival, so I decided to wander around. There's plenty of Mexican and other restaurants on Broadway but this place had loads of families going in; so we decided to try it. The place doesn't look vfancy from the outside but, inside it's decorated nicely, there's an ambiance about it, it's good for small groups without prior arrangements, most of all the food is very good! It's not at all expensive, depending of course on what you order. They have Mexican sodas and Coca-Cola. read more

Mediocre place. In Newburgh for a work trip, always in the mood for Mexican food and figured that the large Hispanic population and number of Latin American restaurants meant that virtually any place would be good, due to competition. Came here after seeing good reviews. Guacamole, salsa verde and Chips - Chips were very good and crunchy, pretty bland but that's how I like them. The salsa verde was finally spicy enough and overall excellent but the squeeze bottle was unexpected and didn't work well. It would either drip salsa water, or squirt actual salsa if you squeeze hard enough, which made a mess. I was tempted to cut the bottle opening a bit wider myself. Guacamole was just decent - very lime-heavy which impacts the taste of the avocado, but I was starving so I wasn't too picky at this point. Pastor Tostada - I actually quite enjoyed this dish. Pork was tender and well spiced, with charred pineapple. Torta Cubana - This dish was a big mistake. Partially a mistake on my part for ordering it and not realizing they put head cheese in it, which tastes like a barn, and partially their mistake for putting in head cheese. With the head cheese, it's certainly an acquired taste (read: disgusting). After I removed the slice of pig face and brain from the torta, it was still mediocre, but actually somewhat edible now. Too much random tasteless meat, greasy and nothing spicy/tangy like jalapeños to cut the grease. This was the worst torta I've ever had, since usually tortas are pretty good. Holy crap, I wish the waitress warned me about it because I would have definitely ordered literally anything else. To add insult to injury, they sliced the torta in the wrong direction so I had two very wide pieces and the filling falling out everywhere. Prices were very reasonable, but this is also fairly low end food in an inexpensive area so it makes sense. It made me laugh when the avocados on the side dishes said "market price" as if they're selling Lobster tails LOL read more

I really wish I could give this place a better review because they do really deserve it for their food quality and service. However, multiple times now I have taken home food from here that has been incorrectly made. My girlfriend has a severe dairy allergy and always makes sure to request food with no dairy, but there's always dairy in it. I don't want to think it's intentional, but it's happened enough that I won't be returning. These things are important and can't be overlooked even with good quality food and service. read more

A group of 20 hungry Italians arrived at 8pm. We called ahead since the restaurant was closing. They welcomed us without hesitation. Excellent food selection, taste was superb. The best around!! And I can thank Yelp for turning us onto it. Tons of great flavors in the food. Fresh limes, radish and two different sauces are served with the meals and they have a cooler full of Jarritos and Boing to complete the dining experience. All the tacos! High quality and cheap tacos, best I've had in a long while. In order of favorites: trompa (super tender and tendon-y), lengua (tender), cabeza, tripa (fried!). We also tried arabe, which was a very flavorful sausage but was on the dry side. Loved all the salsas as well. The standout was the menudo. Only available on weekends. My small bowl was very generous and filled with tender (see the trend going here?) tripe. Came with corn tortillas or bread. Service was prompt and very nice. We had no problem getting a table at 11am Saturday morning. Can't wait to come back! read more

I get tacos all over the country, so it's rare for me to find tacos I've never heard of. Arabe tacos come from apparently a single city in Mexico, which is why I've never seen them before. Cecina tacos are also fairly rape. The tripe tacos are only found in places where Mexicans eat. This shop was authentic, reasonably priced, and with tasty food. read more

Have been to Los Portales twice. The first occasion i had a Torta and found it unremarkable. This occasion I decided I was in the mood for enchiladas. FIrst thing, the chips we were served were just dripping with oil! Never been served chips like this. Sometimes I have been served oily chips elsewhere but they were always rigHt out of the fryer and hot. These chips were cold and dripping wIth oil. I ordered the Enchiladas Rojas. There were four hidden under a heaping pile of lettuce. They were filled with dry bland chicken white meat and wrapped in tortillas which yes were soft however they were not covered with what I know as Rojas sauce and baked but simply covered with what seemed to me to be their flaming spicy hot salsa. The plate wasn't hot, the side of rice was barely warm and I took only one bite. I managed to eat two of the enchiladas which were pretty narrow because I was starving and the lettuce. The rest I opted not to eat. The small side of guacamole was gianormous in size however it had way more lime juice than I find delectable. Los Portales just isn't my kind of restaurant. read more

All those well-deserved ratings means this place has to be on your "stop here" list. Our waitress was super friendly and patient with us; explaining their menu items and even offered us a better deal than what we ordered, which was just tacos, rice and beans. As far as tacos go; carne azada and spicy chicken were my favorite. Pork is hit or miss with me, and they missed the mark, but my husband liked it, so cant be bad! I loved the thickness of the chips and the flavorful sauce; it was surprisingly different and enjoyable. Like spicy and good and awesome. It was tooooo good. Honestly. Just go. This restaurant's food is horrible! Nothing authentic! The tamales are not good at all...the owner is so cheap! I Bought tamales: mole, salsa verde and rajas...omg the tamales were meatless and dry, no taste...and chicken soup, forget it! I Order a chicken veggie soup, the chef literally put can of veggies in it and plain old water and chicken strips...the soup tasted like water w/ no seasoning...the rest of the food, let me tell you is horrible...the sopes are supposed to be made w/ corn masa...they use regular multipurpose flour and deep fry it, tadaaaa an authentic Sope never ever will I waste my $$$ in this supposedly Mexican Restaurant! Cash only. Great chicken tacos and service. But I didn't like the carnitas. I was actually on my way to Stewart airport and since I heard there's no real good food there, I went out of my way to stop here for some great tacos. I ordered three chicken tacos ($5) and a carnitas (pork) tostada. You order upfront and then a waitress brings your order out to you. The carnitas tostada came out first and it looked really great but had a lot of fat in it, more lard than meat. Despite all this fat, it didn't really have a whole lot of flavor, just a lot of disturbing textures. I couldn't detect any seasoning. The waitress them came out with the three chicken tacos. She saw that I had eaten the avocado and the tostada shell and left the carnitas so she asked me if there is anything wrong. I wasn't going to make a big deal about it and just write it off as something authentic that just isn't for me but since she asked I said yes. So she brought me out a chicken tostada. I'm really glad she did because I loved it and the chicken tacos. The white meat chicken was tender and flavorful. The cilantro and onions were fresh. The tortillas were perfectly soft. Overall the food was great and the service exceeded my expectations. read more

Lets go on record by saying good food takes time. So don't walk in here expecting taco bell-like turn over times when you place your order; that's just silly on your part. The family run establishment is a must visit if you want a great Mexican meal for a good price and good ambiance. most of the times you'll see the owner there along with his kids waiting on you, working the kitchen or just seeing how the meal was. every day has is own set of specials of the day. Sunday would be my fav. because they have tamales from the time doors open (7am) til they run out which is around 10am. get there asap and try the 5-6 different types of fillings. Noooo! Just Noo. Trust me, if I could rate less than a star I WOULD. The place looks like a hole in the wall, which had me excited at first, because those are usually the best places but boy was I wrong. The decor was a bit much, but who am I to judge ; after all I was there to eat not grade the wall decor. Starting with the service , the waitress was more interested in waiting on her buddies next to us then us (there were only the two of us in the whole place) she then waited until after the meal was done (what we could eat of it) to ask if everything was "okay" The menu was nothing to brag about, dry and bland so me and my other decided to try the usual , tacos! I mean you can't go wrong with tacos!! Or so I thought! incredibly too salty with no flavor at all which is why I assume they threw not one but several limes scattered all over our plate. The onions were the size of a quarter and I found a giant piece of pineapple in my taco. Pineapple ? No where on the menu was there a pineapple to be had in my spicy chicken taco that came with only onions and cilantro. The rice was mush, literally, and absolutely the worst refried beans I've had. Has to be hands down, the worst Mexican place I've been. Will not return. And I wouldn't advice you going here. read more

I decided to try this place after seeing the great reviews and because it's hard to find a good spanish restaurant in Newburgh, but I must say it wasn't that great. I really wanted to love this place, because I love mexican food, but I cant convince myself to come back. My husband ordered the steak with onions. He said it had no flavor. My dad ordered the burrito and he thought it was just ok. My niece ordered the quesadillas which she really liked. And I ordered the chicken flautas which I thought were really good as well. The guacamole costs $8 for a small bowl which is ridiculous because it didnt taste fresh and we could barely taste the avocado cause they added so many other ingredients. Another thing is they give you plastic utencils to eat with if you order the flautas while everyone one else gets real silverware. What's the deal with that! If you order water, they don't have filtered water, so you have to pay for bottled water... Who doesnt have filtered water these days? We paid $80 for 5 people which was a lot for the quality of the food we got and the service wasn't good either. We asked for our check and a container for the food we didnt eat and our waitress was MIA until we got up to ask the front desk for the check and the container. She finally showed up. As we were leaving she rushed to our table just to make sure we had left her a tip... Really!!! read more
