I got a small flash tattoo here today with Kyle for $100 and unfortunately had a really disappointing experience. I feel sick to my stomach looking at the result. I chose a simple turtle from their flash sheet, but the final result doesn't match the reference at all. The linework is very messy and shaky in places, shading looks uneven, lines are blown out and it overall does not really resemble the flash at all. It looks horrible and so poorly done. This is by far the worst tattoo I have ever gotten. My boyfriend was supposed to get one after me and we had to make up an excuse to leave.. that's how bad it was. I wasn't going to let him get tattooed like this too. I understand that no tattoo will be an exact copy of flash, but I expected cleaner and similar execution, especially for such a small and simple piece. Overall, I'd recommend taking extra care when booking and making sure you're confident in the artist for fine line work. I should've taken the fact they didn't ask our age, didn't check ID, didn't make us fill out any paperwork and the fact they were chugging beer while tattooing as a red flag. Please be wary as I now unfortunately have to find a new artist to cover up this disaster that I got an hour ago. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in after calling about walk ins one afternoon on our vacation. At first impression the man behind the counter was a little off putting. Not overly friendly. Didn't say too much but we shrugged it off as my boyfriend has no issues relaying his concept for the tattoo he desired. It was a straight forward request that required little to no creativity. Easy breezy. Two hours later, his tattoo was done. When it was my turn and I conveyed my vision. The "artist" became impatient, snippy, and over all unpleasant. My concept was not as straightforward as pointing at a picture and saying "give me that". It required just a little bit of creativity and this man just could not deliver. He was so rude that I became incredibly uncomfortable and decided that it would be best to leave the establishment. As disappointing as it was to encounter a "artist" that cracked under the request of being a little less cookie cutter and a little more creative ... I couldn't be happier about the decision to leave! It led us just a few blocks down the road and we discovered a much friendly and cleaner looking establishment with two of the most low key friendly individuals I think we had met the entire week we were on the island. I 10/10 recommend saving yourself the germs and unpleasantness of this establishment and continue on your way down the road to TC Tattoo. A much happier and cleaner experience. read more

Being the spontaneous person I am, I decided I wanted a tattoo. In Hawaii. Lol, so I came to the nearest shop I could walk to and I'm glad I ended up here than some sketchy place down the street. They were really nice and accommodating and were able to get me in the same day. Josh, who did my tattoos was really knowledge and funny! I was very picky with deciding where I wanted to get a tattoo especially because it would be my first and what place better to get one than Hawaii? I had a list of my top 5 then narrowed down to my top 3. Eventually I decided to take a chance with Lost Coast Tattoos. I spent a VERY long time researching each shop but Rob was really quick in emailing me back, setting up the appointment around 11 days prior to my arrival because I was worried that I'd have to schedule waaaay ahead of time. Long story short I am a huge skeptic about things because I only go for the places with the top reviews, but after viewing a lot of their work and specialities I was convinced. As soon as I got there, they kinda give off as the "cut to the chase" and "no bs" people. This is a good thing because they know that tattoos are forever. My tattoo was exactly the picture I showed them through email and I could not be any happier. They were all really awesome and chill and would go back again. Lost Coast Tattoo looks like a lowkey place but they will give you the best bang for your buck and not rip you off. My tattoo artist said that other artists would take around 3 hours to do my tattoo and he got it done in about 1.5 hours. BEST PART? They have a freaking sweet pitbull named ruby that's so well behaved. They're very clean and take the tattooing process very seriously as well as after care. Made an appointment to get a tattoo done here. Upon entering I was never greeted, which made me feel unwelcome. As my husband came in a little after me, he opened the door and was told by the guy at the front desk to "either come in or stay out because flies will get in." WTF?! First of all, my husband wasn't even halfway through the door when he was told this. Second, the guy had major attitude and was very disrespectful which pissed me and husband off. In the end, as customers, we were treated very poorly which in turn made me walk out and not get a tattoo from this place. It's all about customer service. The worst thing you can do is sit for a tattoo with an artist that is having a rough day or bad attitude. I have a lot of tattoos and this one hurt the most by far. Also, the guy tried to rip me off and up the price once finished with the tattoo as if we did not agree on a price before starting. I do not recommend coming here unless you want someone taking their anger out on you with a needle! I have so many good things to say about Robert and his shop!!! I'll start off by saying he is such a nice guy and a hard working artist. He is self made and has created such a wonderful little place. He really truly cares about his work and takes his time. My brother and I are here visiting from California and he saw us for a walk in appointment, an hour from contacting him! Arrived when it was "supposed" to open, about 10 minutes after "opening" a dude without a shirt walks down from his apartment, looks at us super surprised, and asks why we're there. Told him looking to get a tattoo, he said he wasn't ready yet, went to walk his dog and take a shower. Finally, after about half an hour of waiting, he opens shop. Told him what we want and he told us to come back at 1pm. Told him we couldn't, we were hoping to be his first walk ins, and he said he'd already planned out his morning, he'd just had coffee and was "all shaky" and wouldn't be able to tattoo til after 1. Also they have a shop minimum of $80 which is the other reason we stayed, but the guys were very short with us and it came off as rude. A friend of mine was visiting and wanted a lei tattoo in black with purple plumeria flowers connected with a black shaka. I recommended Lost Coast because Rob did a couple of tattoo's for me, and he did a good job and a reasonable price, together they took about 45 minutes and he charged me $180. We got to the parlor as lunch was being serviced, so after brief conversation, Josh took a $50.00 deposit and set a date (10/5), and gave my friend his card with the date and deposit amount written down. Tattoo day, Josh does not understand what she wants, but Rob does, so he explains it, and I left and told her to meet me at the restaurant down the street when she is done. She shows up a hour later, bleeding with paper towels covering the tattoo, no care instructions and ink on her foot. She tells me that Josh charged her $340, I asked if he deducted the $50 deposit and she said no, so $390! I was shocked, even the most experienced tattoo artists charged between $200 and $300 per hour, only the very popular artists to the "Stars" charge $400 or more per hour and Josh most defiantly is not that, please google it. I called him and raised my concerns and he ask me what I thought it was worth, so I told him, $200, he said come back and I'll refund some of your money. When we got back there was a black couple talking with him, so we just waited patiently, but Josh immediately turns his attention us and asks "why should I give you any money back?". My reaction was, first you told us you would, second did you deduct the deposit? He said "Oh I forgot and did not write it down", uh, Josh, yes you did, on your card. I'm local, I showed him the tattoos that Rob did and told him what he charged, I showed him a tattoo that Voodoo did and what they charged, and told him he was ripping off my friend because she was a "tourist" and I would spread the word to everyone I know in town and through social media reviews. He then throws $100 at my friend and told us with lots of expletives to get out of his shop and threatened to assault me. Final note, between both the initial visit, during the tattoo work, and the final visit, neither Josh, Rob or his son wore a mask, in fact Rob and I discussed vaccinations, and Josh said he does not give a "expletive". I would steer clear of this business, especially JOSH, his work is so-so, and every other aspect is bad, very bad! read more

My husband and I were tattooed by Rob Lakoff, the owner and primary artist of Lost Coast Tattoo and it was a very professional experience. My husband initially wanted to get a tattoo when we arrived in Kona and our first stop was K Town Tattoo in Kona (where the coffee shop will refer you too). I was considering getting a tattoo but overall was very sketched out by the owner there (Erica). They also charged $175/hr!! Which is ridiculous. I've gotten tattoos done by talented artists for $150/hr max. So I contacted South Seas Tattoo in Hilo and they referred us here. What an awesome referral! My husband and I both walked in and Rob greeted us and consulted with us in detail about his tattoo experience, the style of the tattoos we wanted, and placement of the tattoo. He had the tattoos drawn up within that day and texted us images. He also quoted us a very fair price considering his skill and said that if he went over the price estimate due to time he wouldn't charge us over the quote. He also volunteered to take off the $50 deposit my husband paid at K Town Tattoo since we were switching shops. Amazing!! After my husband and I got our tattoos done we were very impressed and happy with them. We felt that we underpaid Rob for his skill so we tipped him $90 total for both tattoos. Additionally his shop was clean and safe and his aftercare instructions were knowlegable compared to other artists. Lastly, I'm a fan of having tattoos done by very talented artists and I did not want an average looking tattoo on my body. Rob is hands down a very talented artist and can execute tattoos placed in challenging areas of the body while also doing very clean lines and shading. If you're staying in Kona, GET TATTOOS HERE. He told me if I left a deposit with him he would honor it if we couldn't come to an agreement..so I leave a 50$ deposit. Come in the next day around 11:10 with my buddy that had a tat that he wanted cleaned up.. his shop hand was one worded and turned him down instantly ,told him to "just cover it up" ..dude was Hella rude about it to...so I tried to call josh..got the shop...apparently "josh" was running late...never got a call back.so I filled up the next few days and nothing.so I started doing research and wasn't happy with what I was finding in the reviews. So I fund a more reputable shop and got something scheduled..right off the batt the artist I chose already had way more input, ideas , and actually communicated with me. Tried to contact josh again and nothing..so my mind was made up.. went into the shop on 11-8 when they opened the doors..josh proceeded to tell me he had to get set up..I said no worried I just wanted to have a word. I told him I wasn't comfortable and wanted to wait on this piece bc i was not sure with what I wanted to do.he said cool no prob . But when I asked for my deposit back he told me it was non refundable? I said so your just gonna take my cash? And josh responds with you couldn't have gave me atleast 48 hrs notice? I said bro I've been trying to get ahold of you for 4 days! I can show ya my phone if ya want? And he responds with "whatever dude" and I said don't know why your trippin you literally have no time invested...so he walks to his safe and pulls my money. A few months back my partner and I wanted two different tattoos and emailed our designs the night before. Rob was very accommodating and great at communicating over email and gave us a quote for what we wanted. When we came in, Josh was the one to take us (a surprise, because we thought Rob was doing them). Josh had printed out only my partner's design and assumed we were both getting the same one. When I told him we had emailed my design as well, he was really disgruntled and said he'd rather just draw my design on instead of using their sketch machine. He was clearly in a hurry. I wanted the lines thin and dainty and Josh said he wouldn't give me a "half ass tattoo"... which is fine, i just wish Rob would have communicated that my design was too "thin" for Josh. Anyway, now i have a tattoo in a very visible spot on my body that I didn't really want. Then Josh tried to charge higher than we were quoted. When we called him on it, he fixed it thankfully but still... they should be consistent. Overall, it was a really poor experience.
