It happened again! Started out at the Lost Duck for dinner. The place was empty save for our party of two and one other table I think. We waited a while for menus and when I asked the waiter how long the merlot had been open, he said "a couple weeks", with a shrug. I was certain that I would not be drinking there and probably no food either. I asked if he would be willing to open a new bottle and his response was direct and to the point, which I appreciated. Nope, he wouldn't and since it was Sutter Home, how good would it be anyway? We were welcome to go somewhere else. We did! Went to the Fort Diner and had a great! Cheap! Cajun! Burger! Stopped in for drinks as this has been on my radar since seeing the bar online. Our party of 4 was very disappointed. The vibe and atmosphere was nothing like expected. Music blasted making conversation non existent. Service was lackluster. If you were not a regular, you basically did not exist. Margarita was a minus ten, and that is being kind. I give kudos for the games on the side room.....nice touch but nothing else makes you want to stay to play the games. We found the Lost Duck quite by accident and honestly could have spent the day and night there. It is so charming and the beers are all great! Bartender was wonderful to chat with, had great insights and info about the region and we chatted a lot about the great music that was playing - eclectic and not a bad song in the mix. Despite construction while we were there, it's right on the Mississippi and will be even more amazing when the mess is cleared. Their menu looked fantastic, although we had obligations to dine elsewhere and couldn't stay. Wish we had - the place we went was definitely nothing to write home about. I would send everyone I know to this little bar on the river if we knew anyone remotely close by. If available, highly recommend the raspberry lemon ginger shandy! read more

I really hate giving only 2 stars but the beer just was not that good. I had the stout and it tasted as if it was about to go skunky. My companions also tried different offerings and had much the same reaction. Too bad too because the location is great, right by the river, across from the old fort. The interior was also clean and bright. The hours here are a bit limited so check out the website before coming here. I will say that the bar tender was friendly. Absolutely terrible service from beginning to very abrupt ending! The waiter/bartender/?whatever else capacity he as serving was very rude as well as sarcastic. We sat in the front section with bar and there was no one else eating there and only one person at the bar. Waiter was very tied up talking to person at the bar and after bringing menus he went back to his bar customer . We looked and decided and closed our menu in hopes that he would understand that we were ready to order. After about ten minutes he finally came over. Asked about wine and if it was freshly opened or not and he said it was older and he could not open another bottle until the OLD ONE WAS FINISHED. So we said that he could be serving bad wine and then he mentioned the name brand(not high end to say the least) to which my friend said, " so you're implying that it wasn't that good to begin with?" Waiter said yeah, something like that and told us that we could "always drink water " He had a smirk on his face-I guess he thought this was funny. I asked my friend if she wanted to go somewhere else and she looked at the waiter and said we could always go somewhere else to eat. He looked at her and laughed and said " yes you can! My husband and I enjoyed a really nice dinner at Lost Duck. I had the Cuban and French Fries and my husband had the grilled chicken sandwich. We also had a few of the on-tap brews but I don't remember what they were. I just know that we both enjoyed them (with a little slice of lemon). My cuban was perfect. So many people make weird cubans, adding bbq sauce to the pork or something really weird, but this one was PERFECT! And the sandwich was huge. I could only eat half of it and I enjoyed the other half the next day. My husband's grilled chicken sandwich was big but he ate all of it since it was so good. We also had really great service. I'm a generally picky consumer, so I can't understand how this place has only 2.5 stars. This was my first time in and I really enjoyed it. I was in town for a business trip and generally make it a point to try breweries in whatever area I find myself. I sat at the bar and was served promptly. I really wanted a flight, but didn't want 10, 6 oz samples while still having to drive. I sampled several beers and ended up ordering two full pints. The beers weren't the best I've ever had, but were very good for such a small operation and I wish I could've tried more. I had the elk burger with house fried chips and it was really good. The burger was cooked as ordered and was a surprising offering from a small town place. I hope to be back in the area again and look forward to trying more beers and food! read more

Well, we were in town for a family reunion for the night, and I always like to try local craft breweries when I can. Lost Duck seemed to fit the bill, so we ventured in. We perused the menu, largely consisting of bar food, but with a hint of gastro-pub sensibility. I opted for the elk burger, and my wife tried the jambalaya. We could not have been more disappointed in the entrees. The burger was overcooked and painfully dry, which was a pity, because it was flavored nicely. The slice of tomato on the burger was cut at a pretty ridiculous angle, which just made it slide to one side. All in all, the burger I had the other day at Wendy's was superior, which breaks my heart because I really wanted to like the food here. The jambalaya that my wife had was equally disapppointing...filled with tiny salad shrimp and bits of chicken (and maybe sausage?) it was dressed with an unseasoned tomato sauce, and served with a plain piece of sliced white bread (not even a roll? Really?) Not much flavor besides the tomato sauce, which is hardly the bar to set for a Cajun staple like jambalaya. We had started the meal with the fried pickle spear appetizer...which I enjoyed, but the wife thought the breading was too thick for the cut of pickle. Overall, it was a nice appetizer, but could use some refinement. The star of the food for us was their fresh-fried potato chips...these aren't just your basic fried potato, but wonderful thick-cut REAL potato chips. 5-stars for the chips, but the rest of the food needs some help. Moving on to the primary reason I wanted to go here, the beers. I tried two of their offerings, one called American Wheat, and the other a flavored offering called Duck a la Orange. The wheat beer, while having that distinctive wheat flavor, was totally lacking in any depth of flavor. it just tasted watered down, which was disappointing. So, I moved on to the intriguingly named Duck a la Orange. This beer has a really wonderful aroma, like what you smell when you peel a fresh orange. The taste...well, you can taste the orange...and not much else. Still, I liked it well enough to bring home a growler, and would likely stop back in at this brewery next time I'm in town. We also tried one of their house-made sodas, opting for their cream soda. They offer cream soda and root beer, but much to our chagrin, they serve it old-fashioned, which means they serve it uncarbonated. You ever tried a pop after all the fizz has gone out of it? That's pretty much what it was like. Stop in and sample the beer, but don't expect a lot of of the food. One other thing...the service. Now, this was a Saturday night, at about 6pm...but the place was NOT busy...there were a few people at the bar, and I think one other table when we were seated. Service was S...L...O...W...and kinda sporadic. When we finally got our bill, I handed the guy (who I presume was the owner) my debit card...and he politely tells me that they don't accept cards. What kind of restaurant doesn't accept a debit card in this day and age? Thankfully, I had enough cash on me to cover the tab and tip, but I don't frequently carry cash. Might want to put a sign on the door or something to alert non-local patrons that it's a cash-only establishment. read more

This is a great small micro brew for a small town like Ft Madison. We went for a couple of beers and some appetizers. It was all very cheap and the micro brews were pretty good and you can tell they are home made. Service was fast and they were friendly once they opened up to you. Place is located downtown and it's a perfect location to hang out. We will be back for sure. They are cash only and closed on Sundays and Mondays so those are the negatives. read more

Full disclosure, I grew up in the northwest and lived for several years in Colorado, which has some of the best beers in the country, so I'm a bit of a beer snob. Two of us had very good food and beer at Lost Duck after finishing riding RAGBRAI. The almond-encrusted duck bits were a little bit over fried, but kudos for the inventive recipe. I had the Porter Burger, effectively a gourmet bacon-cheese burger, which was excellent. The beers were fine, especially the red lager. I really enjoyed this place. I was working up in Burlington IA and found Lost Duck Brewing Company on Yelp. Forget the chains and casino buffets and take a ride to Ft Madison. The food was excellent. I had the Shrimp Mozambique with a beet and vegetable mix, house salad and a pint of raspberry lemon shandy. Nice space, great chef, nice location across from the fort on the river. This brewery is a gem. The only craft Brewery in the region if you are in Fort Madison this is the place to be! Beer tasted a bit flat (Oktoberfest) and the wheat was a bit lacking in taste, but nevertheless a great place to visit if you are in town. Support your local brewery! read more

Traveling through SE Iowa and looking for a meal and warm spot to relax. We stooped at The Lost Duck. After a few moments we were seated. After a wait, a guy come to take our drink orders. Not desiring anything but water and soda to drink, we were informed that the kitchen was busy and it would be 45 minutes for food to be prepared. His attitude was gruff and the place was less than half full. We walked across the parking lot and had a meal with good service at The Parthenon. I am not impressed at all! I wonder if we had been drinking the service would have been different. As I do not typically drink while on a long drive. I love tenderloins but here they had not learned how to cook tenderloins. They did not even have enough for our whole table. The tenderloins came out under cooked. went there last week. The beer was pretty good, not the best I have had, but still pretty good. I had the pintail red ale and a porter. my daughter and I ate there for dinner. I had the shrimp po'boy and she had a meatloaf on mashed potatoes. She got the better of the deal. While my po'boy was ok her meatloaf was great, especially with the porter. All in all, a pretty decent restaurant/bar. I will go back and maybe be a little more careful in my dinner choice. Stopped here on our way down river, on July 23rd. Really wanted to like this place, but with the poor quality of their beer, it was impossible to do. Started off with the Pintail Pale Ale. Tasted more like a poorly done Pilsner with a bad off taste at the end. My wife hade the American Wheat. Hard to screw up a basic wheat, but they do it here. It also had an off putting aroma, with an off putting after taste. She was unable to finish it. I next tried the Ringneck Red. It was better than the Pale, but the bar was set pretty low. It also had a off taste at the end. I seriously have to wonder if their tap lines and tappers need cleaning. The food was average, but service was slow. Took 30 minutes to get a salad. Cannot recommend this place to anyone, and we certainly will not return. read more
